the headphones are internal monitors, you listen to the right moment with all the other musicians and sequences, the external sound has a delay or latency which is what the processing of the instrument takes until it reaches the audio console and then the speakers, besides The sound of the instruments are very noisy and cover the voices, that's why the headphones are used.

I really don’t know how Nicki couldn’t hear the right moment to join the song, because there wasn’t any single noise in the crowd, like a room full of people spending money on something they have every year or month (concerts), so they don’t care at all. when you're on the stage, the music is much louder and without the earpiece, there is a higher chance that you'll miss the cue because its in an open space and the sound echoes. it wasn't the mic, it was the earpiece. tech team really messed her up. its not nicki's fault.
