ARIEL 500 BUILD PART 2 valve springs, oil pump and some thoughts

In this second part I'm grinding the valves the way I was taught to do, by someone that had years of experience of building and tuning JAP speedway engines, and more modern speedway engines. Francis Cann was a speedway rider back in the 50s and 60s, and taught me so much during the time I worked with him. I also fit new ball valves to the oil pump before packing it away until the time come to fit it. My crankshaft is being worked on by Godden Engineering and Conway Motors, a local Vincent specialist. Many thanks to, Draganfly Motorcycles, and John Budgen, and also Scrambleboy on ebay, for finding the parts I needed. The next video will deal with the crankshaft and main bearings.

I think you'd actually get away with boring that OK - some of the early aero engines used liners way thinner than that (Hispano Suiza for example), though a "bellows" effect was not unheard of and liner leaks common! Good demonstration of valve lapping, I was taught just the same and it never fails. Nice job, enjoyable video.

The Ariel 500 cylinders have a reputation for snapping in half if overbored too much so I decided to err on the side of caution.

Great video to find on here! That cam’s really interesting! I’ve just picked up a pair of 46/47 casings too and looking forward to collecting parts for it. Hope the auto jumbles are back this year!!

I still need a few parts for another project. It costs a small fortune building things up using new parts.
