Anthony Fantano rates music with a strange rigid academic objectivity when music taste is incredibly subjective and defined by the wiring in your brain, culture and what you grew up listening to. Spotify published some research that lead credence to the idea that the music you listened to as teen influences what you like as an adult. I n some parallel universe where he's a classical music snob he would be shitting on anything modern, and influencing those who do listen modern music to force themselves to listen to something they don't like to fit in with what's "right". also he's bald and drinks soylent

The worst part is that, let's say you just want to be in tune with his taste, and what he likes. You can't even do that, he is a complete hypocrite and will say stuff in the past, and go against what he said years later about similar albums. Like what he did taking down Travis Scott for associating with Kanye, but then when JPEGMAFIA began collabing with him, he started acting like it wasn't that big of a deal. It just makes me wonder why people even watch him in the first place. His reviews are very lacklustre and never really provide an actual feel or exploration of any album he ever talks about. You never come out seeing it in a new light or learning about a bunch of different things. It's always just a couple music nerd buzzwords to look like you know what you are talking about and then a numerical rating

Negative xp saying critics are detrimental and then saying everyone is a critic is cringe af. What he really means is that everyone should judge music subjectively (which is good), but to also not share those opinions publicly as to not influence others. Any music critic is bombarded with just as much backlash as they are praise for their takes. Critics rarely change someone's opinion, but rather allow them to see it through someone else's eyes or to hear an analysis they might've not thought of. I get that the interviewer wanted this clip since he asked the question right as Ariel was answering a completely unrelated question, but damn dude. He knew exactly how this question would go considering Negative xp and Ariel's history with responding to critics. Also does Ariel realize that someone can like their music, but also later not like them as a person? No one is required to continue consuming your art if you're a twat. Textbook circlejerk jfc
