I'll join voice with Nika and discourage you from the Sawyer mini. Either upgrade to the full regular Squeeze OR grab the relatively new Platypus Quickdraw. I changed from the squeeze to the quickdraw recently and I'm loving it so far. The biggest benefit of the Quickdraw (other than the awesome flow rate) is that it is self sealing so on nights that get below freezing when you want to put it in your sleeping bag you don't need to put it in a ziploc bag first. The first ever squeeze-style water filter I had was the Sawyer mini exactly like the one you have, and I discarded it after the third trip I took it on. Once I got the regular Squeeze I wished I'd just gotten that one in the first place! Don't get me started on the old school filters we used to use back in the day. With pumps and nonsense. Good gravy.

Enjoy your adventure! It's awesome that you've gone through the medical training, you will be a true asset to your future crew. I've used the MiniMo car camping for years but never used the bottom cup. This year, I'm focusing on backpacking and was trying to decide if I should go with a lighter cook system, but then I realized that the pot lid fits on the cup so it can be for hot drinks, a bowl, rehydrating food, and protecting my pot. I don't know how I've missed this over all these years, lol.

Agree wtih Nika on getting some waterproof tape for gear repair. Just get Tenacious Tape, it's the best. Also, if you didn't get blisters on a 9 day hike of the TRT I doubt you'll get any on the PCT though the desert might have a different idea for your feet. Remember that your feet do swell more in the desert for some reason. If you do carry Leukotape, the best trick I've found is to cut sections of it and stick it to the backings of mailing labels (or any kind of slick paper that stickers come on) - so you make a small stack of these flat leukotape "dispensers" and skip carrying the bulk/weight of a roll. You can drop a few of those sheets in your resupply boxes too in case you think you'll need it along the way. But I bet if you wear the dirty girls you won't get blisters just the same as on the TRT. Some people just aren't prone to them. I almost never get them.

12:10 The GSI mug - a couple points. FIrst off, it's great and I always take it, it's a true "luxury" item but it's awesome. You said it's not multifunctional - hopefully this is good info for you, but I totally disagree! 1. It serves its obvious purpose as a mug to drink hot drinks out of 2. You CAN cold soak in it! The seal is totally sufficient, just make sure it's closed down very tightly and make sure the sip-hole is closed. And make sure it rides upright in your pack. (I have also carried a plastic grocery bag which I've wrapped the GSI inside as added insurance against leaks, but generally it's not been necessary.) Give it a try. 3. The measuring cup is accurate and fantastic for measuring water for dehydrated pouch meals. 4. This is something I do that might not be everyone's cup of ... oatmeal: if you remove the cup from the foam insulator, you can actually use the foam cylinder to stand up a pouch of instant oatmeal inside of it. Cut the top of the pouch (I carry a leatherman squirt for the tiny scissors and make the cut clean, because it helps this process) as far at the top as possible. Then, you boil your water and pour into the pouch and stir. The foam cylinder will keep it upright to stir and eat right out of the pouch, so you don't have to burn your hands. I actually do two pouches of instant oatmeal so it works even better. This way, your cup is free to make coffee or tea in, or mix up some greens powder or EmergenC to drink with your breakfast. (I noticed you have concerns about eating out of certain materials like plastic and whatnot, but as far as I know most instant oatmeals are just paper with a wax coating inside no different than any carton of milk/OJ/etc. Idk... I've never had a problem with it.) I'm sure there's more uses for the foam insulator and/or cup, but that's the gist of it for me so far. I'd be curious to hear if anyone else has any hacks or other uses.... Definitely bringing mine on the PCT

Definitely agree with Nika about going with a different water filter. The full size Sawyer or the Be Free or the Platypus are all good options. Since you have issues with your feet and knees, we'd recommend adding a small cork massage ball to roll out your feet and leg muscles. We use Rawology, but there are many good brands out there. For cooking, CNOC makes a reusable bag for cooking that has a better shape to it than the Stasher. We can't wait to follow along as you hike!

Just an interesting thing- sunburns are caused by UVB rays and premature aging is caused by UVA rays- a base tan, will, at max only give you a SPF of 3. So, having a base tan does not protect you from burns as was previously believed. This is updated research btw. (Just a fun fact, that wasn’t meant as a dig in any way shape or form!) Nice video! 🙂

I have the Nimbus 2 as well. I used it for Grand Canyon rim to rim to rim a few months ago. Very happy with it so far. Easy to set up, packs down small, and held up well in significant rainfall. The only thing I'm not sure on yet is the front entry door, still getting used to that.

I’d still use sunscreen personally! We’re young but constant UV exposure increases chances of skin cancer. My grandma died from complications related to skin cancer, and I’m Chicano! We’re brown af lol. Anyway, much love from a Californian dreaming of completing the PCT!

HydraPak has great lightweight bottles and attachments for drinking/filtering etc to avoid plastic bottles - I bought several of their variations to avoid those micro plastics! You tube videos helped explain options.

I’ve heard of those and actually bought a set up before trail! They use the katadyn befree filter. My friend Nika (in this video) said those filters don’t seem to last or work as well over time on trail as the sawyers but could be a good option since they do have those silicone bag attachment options. Maybe I’ll swap out down the road!!

@@ArielleShipe yes, they are made sized to fit a katadyn filter, but I bought their "filter adapter" so that I can just use my Sawyer - I've never tried the katadyn - nothing against them, but I just always had several Sawyers, and others that size, on hand. If you like the HydraPak bottle you already have, it might be worth ordering the filter attachment - only $5 - and like you say the Sawyers last a lot longer. I'm totally with you all the way: microplastics can get in all our organs and reek havoc. I EVER microwave in plastic - this your silicon cooker thing a GREAT idea - I'm definitely going to do that - I get so scared (being a chiropractor!) of so many hikers pouring boiling water into cheep baggies! YIKES!

Back in the late 80’s and early 90’s I did the triple crown. 4 times yeah the CDT was just a game trail back then lol yeah I was homeless back then lol… gear now days is totally different than it was back then. I heard that the AT is going to include Alabama as a starting point instead of Georgia. I guess once it’s completed I’ll do the Appalachian trail one more time. Great load out ,, would have suggested a more thorough first aid kit ,wasn't line item listed but looked fairly basic +,, but tips to add later mentioned ,, and description of training would have led to knowledge of needs included ....as you mentioned ,, it's usually for someone else ,, seems that more thru hikers today rely on very basic "boo-boo" kits ,,or nothing at all .. ... The go to item being added I see today is a reflective umbrella ,, useful for shade which also lowers temps ,, rain , snow and privacy in open areas for nature calls ....thoughts ??.. ... Your last name Shipe rings a bell as I swam with a "Jeff Shipe" back in the 70's at Mesa Aquatics Club. Jeff was an Awesome Butterflyer! he chose a scholarship to UNLV and that old highway60 from Phx. was as deadly a road as they come back then. Jeff survived a horrific crash but suffered permanent injuries. He would come to practice after his recovery but his memory was taken away from him.. A really decent kid.. Do you know Jeff? I’m assuming that you are already on the trail so congratulations on that. I like the gsi mug but not with the insulated piece. It’s great without it. The liquid still stays warm for a long time, your hands don’t get burned, your hands warm up. I think it weighs 2oz less? My wife and I both used them on the pct

I know this is silly but I recommend you bring a large heavy duty trash bag with you. It can be used to place wet stuff in, be used to as an other liner for the toe of your sleeping bag to keep it from getting wet or warm you up, or as a an inside liner if your bag does get wet. It can be used as a rain/sun shelter as well. Last, clothes pins or small binder clips, I have gone out and ended up with broken zippers on my tent a few times that I could not repair. Clipped the door shut with clothes pins. And, I could hang stuff with the twine I brought.
