Having difficulty cutting through compacted snow and big banks is everything a normal snowblower struggles with. At least every snowblower I’ve owed. Snowblowers aren’t meant to scrape all that compact stuff up after you drive over it with your car 10 times they’re meant to clear the driveway after a snow storm.

Valid point there. But the auto turn is still garbage in my opinion. You would have to use an Ariens equipped with auto turn to fully understand.

@@OldSoulMillennial I received 30+ inches of snow February 1st & 2nd I have the 32”RapidTrak and yes, it is a muscling event to carve off packed snow with “auto-turn”. Ariens needs an override to a locked differential when one wants to carve off snowplow pileup & hard packed snow. My RapidTrak in ‘Wheel mode’ will turn on a dime & is great for fresh snow. ‘Track mode’ is straighter, but auto-turn will still create a muscling event if the snow is packed, but does track much straighter than wheel mode. I have not tried it in ‘Dig mode’ yet, as that would probably be better, but I believe I need - wider, longer, skid shoes - for gravel & lawn terrain. My old Craftsman 29” with locked axle & modified impeller can carve a straight line down the side of the road of relatively fresh snowplow pileups. That being said, the RapidTrak loves to eat deep, 8” to 24”+ of snow and throws huge volumes. Less than 6” of snow is not worth using this beast on. I wonder if one could incorporate a hydraulic lock feature to the hydro-drive differential to create equal drive force to both wheels. 🤔 I think my RapidTrak will perform better than your wheel blower ‘Only’ because of wide tracks & the extra modes. Your review is perfectly valid. Try using the longer poly skids

During the winter of 2018-19 I had the opportunity to evaluate a brand new Ariens 28"Deluxe with auto steer and a 5yr Cub Cadet 30" 2 stage with power steering (triggers). The Cub handled great with the power steering, no pull either side but the auger box was flimsy and flexed from side to side when blowing the banks built up by the highway plows. Also experienced occasional plugging and short throw distances. The Ariens while throwing abilities great and never plugged, handling was bad. Constantly pulled from side to side especially when taking only half width of the auger or when making paths on our uneven lawn. The dealer tried to resolve this issue with the Ariens, yes, plastic shoes, add weight, remove weight, verify tires pressure, the whole 9 yards, but finally admitted that for the circumstances this machine was being used either a solid axle or power steer machine would be required. My mind made up, I purchased a Toro 1028 OHXE with power steering and never looked back. Tracks straight as an arrow no matter wet or dry snow half auger box or full, smooth asphalt or rugged lawn field. Auto steer may work for some folks, but it is definitely not a cure all. And don't forget the manufacturers will push this device for cost savings on their part.

Yep, after much research such as your experiences with auto steer in the real world of hard to deal with snow conditions, I also decided to go with a Toro with trigger steer. For the life of me, I don't understand why Ariens does not offer a trigger steer option on their high-end machines. Many with auto steer will not buy another one with that feature. i have a 28 platinum sho rapid track. lots of power, starts super easy. my first year with it i found the auto turn frustrating, especially digging into a bank trying to shear it off. i eventually found that in "dig in mode" the setting that locks it down really tightly, thats where i had problems with the auto turn. in the middle position i had no issues except it can be hard to turn really tight at speed. in wheeled mode it rides right over any compacted snow, but in dig in mode it does much better, although not perfect. i canr compare it to any others as this is the first snow blower ive owned. i have a fairly large sloped driveway and over all im happy with it. it will definitely move a lot of snow!

I was frustrated with my auto turn feature as well. I replaced the front skid shoes with a "universal" replacement shoe that were longer (aprox 8"). @@johnd.613 I wanted the biggest snowblower with the most power I could afford and that's why I went with the Platinum 30 SHO. We had a storm here in Maine last week with about 6" of snow and a little rain on the top. It didn't ice over but the snow was stickier than powder. The SHO performed well. I was able to throw the snow from the middle of the driveway to one side or the other. When it's powder, it will send it 30-40ft easily. Yes it will ride up when you hit compacted snow like the plow bank but that's only if you're going to fast. I usually keep it 1 or 2 for speed and take bites out of the bank and I don't have any issues. Would I buy it again? Probably but it would depend on what else is out there at the time. I was looking at the big Toro and Cub Cadet but neither were available locally so I went with Airens and I'm not disappointed. For your needs in Michigan, I can't imagine why it wouldn't work for you. It handles well and has good power. I would recommend the poly skid shoes and the weight bar for better performance.

Great video. It seems most are happy with the auto turn function. I opted to not buy a snowblower with the auto turn system due to my very uneven terrain on my property. I wonder if the spring in your auto turn differential is defective. Maybe not as strong as it should be? I know you replace your steel shoes with the poly ones, and you said it made a big difference for the better. Another thing I found after much research with the auto turn differential, is that it will wear out over time and need to be replaced. I wonder if it could be taken apart and be serviced, or the spring just gets week over time? The Toro HD machine I decided on buying and trying out for the first-time last year has the triggers to unlock each wheel separately or when not pulled the axle stays locked in two-wheel drive. I took the service plate off and looked at the cog system that unlocks each wheel separately and found the units to be very heavy duty. I also made sure everything was well lubricated as well. And it was. Toro even uses anti seize on the wheel axles. After using the machine for the first-time last winter, I found it worked really well. One thing about the trigger steering that is a bit of a downer, if you are turning right and need to make a shoot adjustment with the quick stick, you must release the left driver to do so. That is one area that the auto steer would be nice to have. With my property being so uneven in many places, I was afraid I would be fighting the auto steer to go where I wanted it too. I have nothing against Ariens snowblowers, I just wish they had an option for trigger steering on some of their higher end machines. Toro uses the trigger steering on the 12 and 14 commercial series machines. Well, let's see what this winter has in store for us. I live in southeastern MI and winter can be a mix bag of tricks. They are predicting a mild winter for our part of the country. One thing is for sure, we will find out soon enough. I wish you and your family a safe and enjoyable wither.

That is why I decided to not buy an Ariens Machine. Before doing some research, I was ready to pull the trigger on a high end Ariens snow blower. There is a Ariens dealer not far from where I live. After reading the negative and honest reports by Ariens and Toro auto steer owners, I decided to research machines without that system. Toro Power Max HD commercial grade snow blowers use trigger steer. Simplicity does as well on their commercial grade machines. One thing I did not like about the Simplicity machines, was there electronic shoot control. Toro exclusively uses their patented Auto Stick which is a manual system. No worries of switches or small electric motors going bad down the road. Other than that, Simplicity is an excellent snow blower. Toro has good reviews also with their patented no clog snow intake system. Like all the big brand higher end machines, they all intake snow and blow it to the moon and beyond. Engines are all very powerful and efficient. It really comes down to what works best for your application and the terrain you have to deal with. In a perfect world, auto turn is the best thing sense sliced bread. To spend big money on a snow blower, and find out it does not perform well in certain situations would be a devastating situation I don't want to be in. So, after doing my research, I decided to order a Toro Power Max HD 1232 snow blower. Won't get it until early fall. Hopefully, it works and holds up well. It is always best to find a Dealer who has good reviews and buy from them. I just so happen to have an excellent Toro dealer just a few miles from where I live. You may save on a machine from a big box store, but when something goes wrong with your machine, it can be a pain to have your machine fixed. Don't forget to use Sea Foam fuel additive in all your outdoor power equipment. It helps keep carburetors and fuel injectors clean. I used for years with good results.

I have the deluxe 30. Agreed that auto turn is useless and makes handling much more difficult. I did however improve the handling drastically by putting 15 pounds of weight over the auger housing. Ariens sells 10 lb weights for this purpose at 52 bucks a pop: I made my weight with 3" pvc filled with sand, capped the ends, and bolted to top of auger housing. Cost me about 25 bucks and my time. More weight on the auger housing makes a difference for sure.

Greetings, fellow snow throwers. OldSoulMillennial, thanks for sharing your experience with your Ariens machine. I have done lots of research, and you are not alone in your dislikes of the auto turn system. Yes, if one is dealing with perfect conditions, it works perfectly. But not everyone is blessed with nice flat services to blow snow on. Yes, some will say they have no issues no matter the terrain. Well, if that were the case, then why so many complaints with auto steer machines, even after doing all the leveling adjustments suggested by the manufactures. "Ariens - Toro". I have done my research before pulling the trigger on a new commercial grade snow thrower. Before researching, I was ready to buy a high end Ariens. I am glad I searched and listened to videos of unhappy owners of auto steer machines. For most, they are happy with their choice of owning an auto steer snow thrower. But there are some who are not. If conditions are perfect, then auto steer is the best thing sense sliced bread. But who has perfect conditions all the time? Hard packed snow, uneven driveways, catching the grass along the sidewalk or driveway, seems to be some of the biggest complaints with auto steer. How many vehicles have been dented by an unexpected turn with auto steer? After much research, I have decided to go with a Toro. In their commercial grade HD models, they use trigger steer. With everything man made, regular maintenance is vitally important to a long lasting and well running machine. Even that does not guarantee you will have no problems down the road. Anything manmade has it limits. Another important issue is fuel. I have found like many others, that Sea Foam added in every fill up of fuel is a great way to keep carburetors and fuel injectors clean and running smoothly. It also helps stabilize fuel. I have had very good results for many years with my summer and winter machines. It works in 2 or 4 cycles engines. In my research, I have found like many hard-core Chevy and Ford owners, they are bias towards their brand. In the snow blowing world, it is much the same. So, getting unbiased information concerning the pros and cons of snow blowing machines is not always so easy. I wanted to make sure I was making the best choice for my snow blowing needs. And for me, trigger steer was the best option. Toro Power Max HD 1232 was the machine I pulled the trigger on. Big investment, but I can only hope it holds up well long term. Won't get it until early fall. Not that I am in any hurry for winter to return. I enjoy warmer weather fare more than cold weather. But, when winter shows it ugly head with lots of snow, and adverse conditions, I hope to be ready to deal with it without too much of a struggle. Blessing to all who brave the elements and get the job done.

I can't agree with you more. I did my homework before buying a new snow blower. Really was leaning towards one of the Ariens Professional Series snow blowers, until I found complaints from honest people about their dislikes of the auto turn used exclusively by Ariens. If they would have offered a choice of auto steer or trigger steer, I may have still ordered and Ariens. After much research, I ended up ordering a Toro Power Max HD 1232 with trigger steer. Toro uses the patented quick stick shoot control system that gets good reviews by most. I went to my local Toro Dealer, and they had one snow blower left on the floor. I played around with the quick stick, and it seemed to work quite well. I think from the Toro 10 series upwards trigger steer is used instead of auto steer. That should say something, if Toro doesn't offer auto steer on its lager machines. This link shows how to disable your auto steer. Hope this helps. kzbin.info/www/bejne/gZTTpnWFdtZmpMk

I have a new one, but have only used it once, on snow that was new and not compacted. Did not have a problem. My sense, though, is that auto turn it is a trade off. Most of the time, the auto turn will be easier to use than a fixed axel machine. I am coming from a 1970s era Ariens 24" that is built like a tank. You have to muscle it around. It gets to be a workout if you are using it for an hour or so. With the autoturn, most of the time it is much easier to use, but you may have to occasionally muscle the machine to keep it from turning. Overall, the autoturn is a plus. Funny, but where it really shines is moving it around in the garage. You don't even have to fire it up. I do think, if you get a lot of heavy snow, either the Deluxe 24 (which uses the same motor as the 28) or the 28 SHO may be better choices than the Deluxe 28. Power on the 28 is adequate, but with 4" less width, should seem even better on the Deluxe 24. Alternatively, the extra horsepower on the SHO should be quite noticeable.

Maybe if you had if you had more upper body strength than a toddler you’d be able to use it. Make sure it’s set up properly and it will steer just fine. I’m 62 with a bad back, with a 300’ gravel driveway and I have no issues controlling it.

Your comment is quite ignorant. I have posted videos of how to properly adjust the machine. Gravel and pavement are two totally different animals for snow blowers. I would like an apology for your childish insult or else you will be block. I have zero tolerance for trolling

I xould to consider having the differential welded together if you really don't like the auto turn. Danny Boy 73 did it on a warnout one because that part was backordered.kzbin.info/www/bejne/mXvJeHifaqhmipYsi=0TLvLq5DsTXvJw_7

Every argument you made against how the snowblower works has no basis in fact whatsoever.

Its a review video.... The whole point is for me to be critical of things I dislike.
