I have come to the conclusion that people with ON/OFF emotional switches basically informs me that emotional investment isn't possible for them. I saw this in his mother and the relationship between his mother & father. Being in a triangle with the mother turns into a sick competition so then I had to fight myself to maintain a distance. It puts a strain on me and weakens the relationship. A seed of sabotage is planted and the inter-reliance between two people is crippled by the codependency with the mother. The relationship could have been more inter-dependent if the mother taught my spouse how to do things and teach them to me so the "we" component could grow and get off the training wheels. Sipping from my cup while they are sipping from others' cups means their cup is empty for me.
