In this clip, Vlad started off speaking about D.L. Hughley saying that Kanye would be in a conservatorship like Britney Spears if he were a female celebrity. Aries explained that Kanye’s mother appeared to keep him in line when she was alive, and Vlad pointed out that Kanye recently claimed that his mother was “sacrificed.” Vlad then pointed out DJ Akademiks saying that Kanye has alienated himself from so many groups that he’s catering to the conspiracy theorists. Aries explained that he thinks Kanye can be back on top if he drops a hot project, and he stated that he also believes Kanye could get another big corporate deal. From there, Aries spoke about while he’s not a fan of Kanye’s fashion designs, he thinks he should be allowed to create whatever he likes. When Vlad brought up Off-White creator Virgil Abloh, who Aries said he wasn’t familiar with him, which led to a debate about Black people being familiar with Virgil.

This interview showed a few things. Aries telling Vlad he doesn’t know black culture hit a nerve, him telling Vlad to STFU and let him speak, and Vlad still thinks he knows more about black people than a black person. If Vlad actually listened instead of thinking he knows about a whole culture that he has never walked a day in the shoes of he might actually come out smarter. His rebuttal about knowing rappers makes him think he knows all black people. I heard of Virgil last year because of social media not because of “off white” so stop it.

Aries was right and wrong. He made some valid points about Vlad but in the context of the convo they were having, he was wrong. It’s like saying something right to justify being wrong about something else. Off-white was literally the top luxury brand in the world a couple years ago. It beat out all of the top brands. Black people who are of the younger generations and are outside love fashion and if you’re into fashion then you know off-white. Plus, off-white catered to hip-hop. It’s name is a reference to cocaine/crack. Honestly, you can argue that Vlad at least knows hip-hop culture better than some black people because he’s been in the middle of it for decades.

I too like many others can say I’ve never heard of Virgil or “off white” before this interview. Again, I think Vlad needs to come to terms with the possibility he could be wrong. It happens in a lot of interviews, the response default is…”well every black person I know knows this”. That might be true but there’s a need to understand your circle of friends and your bubble. As Aries points our Vlads “bubble” of friends is not always going to be representative of all black (especially the average black) communities. Aries is right about this one.

I'm from the suburbs of upper Westchester County, NY and there's not ONE person I know, Black or otherwise, that has ever heard of "Off-Whites." I think those things appeal to a different sector of our community within the rap culture. It would be the same comparison as if I had mentioned Christian Audigier. I would posit that most people outside of fashion or even the more affluent areas of the country would be aware of this designer; but it's as normal to us as Ralph Lauren.
