I love Andreas Scholl, perhaps the greatest countertenor I ever saw and heard, but the bass version by Norman Treigle is still my absolute favorite hands down. His deep black bass voice & style are incomparable.

I had not yet heard of Raffaele Pe but oh what a fabulous counter tenor ( along with Franco Fagiole) Hopi g to hear a lot more of both. I was a non professional CT, but in my day there were only James Bowman and Paul Esswood, Alfred Deller had retired. .we were really only considered right for church choirs, and only the emergence of Bowman and Esswood seemed acceptable in concert and opera.

For me the Serbian Marijana Mijanović is the most convincing; with erotic aura and almost goosebump inducing. "Va tacito e nascosto" (Italian; translation, "Silently and stealthily") is an aria written for alto castrato voice in act 1 of George Frideric Handel's opera Giulio Cesare in Egitto, composed in 1724 to a libretto by Nicola Francesco Haym. Sung by the character Julius Caesar, it features extensive solos for natural horn. The first singer of the aria was Senesino (actually Francesco Bernardi; 1686 - 1758); an important Italian opera singer and castrato as primo uomo in numerous operas by George Frideric Handel.

Folks please no one "owns" this role or this aria! Some conceptions are so vast, so multi-faceted and so challenging that no single performer ever reaches the ideal realization. Is there ever a perfect Tristan or Fiordiligi?

La comprensibilità del testo è in assoluto la migliore nella versione di Raffaele. Il timbro vocale di Andreas è però forse migliore, ed in tal caso più convincente, anche se nella sua versione il tempo dell orchestra è un po’ lento. Molto suggestivo il registro grave di Marijana.

Wonderful & very different & interesting 3 versions. Having heard each entirely, I must say I'm surprised how Scholl & his orchestra did much simpler than the other two but so full of flavour/character. Pe & Mijanovic are great, maybe I have a penchant for Pe's version. No fave choice though.

I respected all the singers. If I were to pick one, I would say that Raffaele Pe was strikingly inventive and free. I loved what he did with this thrilling aria, sung by so many. Mr. Scholl, much admired, seems to darken his voice more than necessary, I think.

I don't find comparisons between countertenors and female alto appropriate. The strengths of the voices of both sexes lie in different areas overall. In this voice range, the female voices have an incomparably stronger power than the male voices. Anyone who likes powerful voices should definitely listen to female altos. The countertenors' voices are much weaker in power, but have a more individual, often more sensitive expression. Andreas Scholl is the best for me as Caesar, not as strong as Marijana but much more individual and suitable as a general.

The only here who doesnt have a refined legato is Marijana Mijanović, who has a fantastic voice but no some technique. But Mehta? He's a genius but we dont love him for his tecnique. And Scholl is an absolute standard and still the most awesome timber from all countertenors. Rafaelle Pe is one of the leading singers in this repertoire now, and ive heard him live, hes absolutely wonderful, and a monster in this repertoire. HAs legato and diction

For me, one of the best versions of "Va tacito" is by Nathalie Stutzmann or Ewa Podlès. Jennifer Larmore (mezzo) have sing this beautiful too but the tempo was too slow. Mijanović was good as Cesare but sadly her singing technique was not secure so she lost her voice too soon...

I find countertenors are lacking in the bottom range. I much prefer to hear a good strong lower female voice. The castrati were not countertenors.
