This is so badass. In my mind, I can see the mist in the valley of Arirang with the sun rising to the mountain's summit. Land of the Morning calm.

Thank you for putting this up here, it’s great to experience culture through music and very interesting to see how the past has been preserved via these pieces.

The sword dance is beautiful and well-done. However, to celebrate the killing of the king of Paekchae (whose nobles would later found Japan) simply plants seeds of ignoble discord in the hearts of people. As we see know from the current sour situation between the two countries, nobody gains from the conflict except for government officials who bolster support through nationalistic hate of other people as well as those who profit from the sales of arms. Earlier in the program the announcer asserted that Confucian officials believed Korean music had the power to purify the hearts of people.

I don’t see the dance as celebrating death, it is to preserve the story of the sacrifice of the young hwarang who knew he would die but he did what he had to for his kingdom. I think it’s pretty odd that you’re the one showing discord by bringing up Japan, instead of simply appreciating the contents of this music fest.

@@ibelieveinyourgalaxy Hey if that's the way you see it, fine. We can all learn by discussing and reflecting.

It's not about celebrating the death of Baekje's king, just commemorating Hwarang's heroic acts as the announcer said. What do you mean by 'plants ignoble seed'? Even though Baekje's nobles found japan, it doesn't necessarilly mean Baekje equals to modern japan. The majority of Beakje's people were absorbed into Silla and Goryeo and being continued as two koreas so far. The ignoble seed of discord is currently being carried by japanese nationalistic government and it is not a proper comment that you can leave on korean traditional music video🤷

The sword dance dates back over 1000 years. Anyone offended by the origins needs to seriously do some self reflecting

If you think about it everyday koreans didn't dress like this. The land owners had servants who dressed like this for their entertainment. Since the feudal lords had all the money they were the only people in town to make the culture, everybody else was dying in the fields harvesting grains for the so called great leader. So should this be representative of korean past culture? If we had record keeping of everyday ancient koreans, we would get a completely different story much richer than the wooden play here.

If we were to destroy this, there would be only misery and pain left of Korean culture and history. The people who heard this beautiful music, who saw the dances, who themselves played and danced, found something that allowed them to cope and to transcend the misery and pain of life. This is precious. I don't find it wooden. I find it beautiful and spiritual. “The purest voices come from the bottom of hell. They are the ones we mistake for the singing of angels.” - Franz Kafka

I don't understand logic such as yours, should we get rid of Opera too as that was in full swing during the Depression when people lived in suffering. Take into account what Kurtlane is saying too.

Your post is preposterous. This is court music. Not some audio toy employed by a "feudal lord," with servants dressed deliberately to satisfy a momentary whim. You need to delve more deeply into Korean history and culture and stop posting such childish rubbish.

I don't understand. Even though two koreas share same history, language, and culture, the country led by great leader(that you mentioned) is NORTH korea, and these old music performamamces are preserved and recorded in SOUTH korea. What a shame!
