it was a luck of Singaporean students, for they got opening government in this debate since their country is a global one where many people with different cultures live there and their mother language is English. They explained their reasons well. As an Indonesian, I also agree to be a global citizen, so people can accept others easily as they used to do. In my opinion, becoming a global citizen surely makes people not become racist more, although not all people who have a great feel of nationalism are racist.

Students arguing against this motion clearly had a hard time providing coherent and effective argument against the motion not only because they seem to lack necessary language skills and confidence but also because they don't believe in what they are arguing against. Evidently, these students are taught to skillfully repeat talking points and not to think for themselves or even attempt to genuinely highlight differences between nationalism and globalism. This was extremely unfair. They put the strongest speakers (Singaporeans as English is their first language). They had the easiest point to argue for. I understand that it was based on the lots but... the other speakers with other languages as their first language had to fight for ideas that are very hard to couch for and I think that we should all applaud lmao. how a debate works is you're given a motion and a side, opposition and proposition. a motion can be presented one-sided or neutral statement - that's how it is. however, for any motion there will always be two sides e.g. agree/disagree for a one-sided statement, both sides will have limitations and different perspectives. whether you're able to deliver enough points and/or examples is dependent on your skill, general or relevant knowledge and mentality (confident, anxious etc) during the debate. there's nothing unfair about it.

Both government benches did a fantastic job. I wish I was this eloquent in high school. Bravo! However, to be fair, this was a difficult motion to oppose. One argument I can think of is this: Using education as a tool to promote the concept of global citizenship over a nationalist mindset will mean restructuring the education syllabus and potentially removing access to certain parts of our culture. Taking language as an example, promoting a globalist mindset would mean that more widely-spoken languages in the world take priority over our mother tongue. For instance, if you're a Thai citizen, you might have to learn English, Mandarin, Hindi, AND Spanish in school. Although beneficial in an international context, this realistically means that less attention and emphasis will likely be given to the Thai language. Taking history as an example, promoting a globalist mindset would mean that if our history textbook remains at the same number of pages, a majority of those pages will educate students on international history. It will teach us the biggest and deadliest wars, the most influential dictators, the most prominent treaties and agreements. It sounds fantastic, but if everyone (regardless of nationality) only knows about the 'important' parts of history, who will remember the 'smaller' parts of history? This isn't to say that those knowledge are mutually exclusive. However, everything comes at a cost. Including new parts into a syllabus means replacing existing parts. Ideally, we would love to learn as much about the world as possible. Realistically, however, one cannot expect students to take on 20 subjects if they had previously been only taking 10.

The 2nd speaker claimed that school education should provide students with their own choice for what to learn and should not force them to learn what the government or politicians want. But then, it violates their argument as well, because Japanese team was for the education of nationalism, not for individual's right, so that it is way far from the team's initial point of argument. nationalism can win easily if they keep asking gov what is mechanism of implementation to avoid certain country from losing their national identity if school teach globalism instead of nationalism. Moreover, about solving world problems, if individual understand well enough how global trade works people will against terrorism, understand well enough abt climate change people will donate to combat climate change. and if people have strong love to their country, refuges issue will not exist at the first place. Nationalism is more important to be taught at school, so that students will contribute to their country and solve local issues, (pollution, poverty, harmony and political stability). If each citizen take care of their country, global problems will not exist. I think it easier to give an argument at the government side because the inexorical advance that we called as civilization is moving slightly fast, globalisation is affecting significant role, the world apparently become more connected so people understand each other better, because of social media and internet people could see the other side of a world easily, government could give a command and make a move just by foreshadowing the circumstances from screen, conscious or unconscious we are doing everything indeed pretty close to remotely, globalisation is important sincerely the digital currency such as crypto currency is more easier to convert (and more fair) If the world has only one currency (I know there is a lot of counter argument about 'only one currency'), and apparently we can dispersed misunderstood if we understand what every person said(the solution would be: every people understand one global language, and in order to reach that point we must teach globalisation in school). I'm not telling you to abandon your local language but because of globalisation its very important to learn global language that majority of people conceive! And who knows probably in the future there is gonna be one country, erased the border across the land; and form only one country at this terrestrial, and that country name is earth

I think it's so hard to get a fair assessment in terms of audience agreement here because I feel like the majority of people nowadays have a globally-oriented mindset and everyone brings their own implicit biases with them even when they try not to. That's not to take away from team Korea or team Singapore, but I think it was much harder to argue a pro-nationalist opposition and have the audience agree with you, language barrier aside.

Yes i agree, hence why they were able to elaborate well and provide examples, but i think koreans proposed better speeches and they were able to point the main idea/problem of the motion and its urgency.

A Filipino intellectual is anything but slow, subversive yes, perhaps they are slow in your point of view because they are well aware that there are countless metaphysical facets to consider before coming to a logical conclusion about ANY subject. Everybody's talking about the Singaporeans, but don't forget the Korean girls, English is not their native language and they nailed it. I don't know how is the process of participation of the schools on the show, but if their English pronunciation is not clear, they shouldn't participate, unfortunately. The opposition might had really good arguments, but was really hard to understand what they said (again, unfortunately).

I believe that the nationalists missed very important points I will try to advance for them here. If we overemphasize the "global citizen" perspective we lose sight of transgressors. For example, from 1400-1930 European fathers had five sons and this led to idle men who waged war and conquered the world and this over production of sons also led to WW1 and WW2. Today Muslim nations have an even higher fertility with places such as West Bank Palestine with six sons per father. Nationalism and opposition to immigration then become important tools of defence and help the offending nations to understand what they are doing wrong. For example, the offending nations need to educate women to encourage them to have first born after the age of 23 in which case mothers go from having 12 babies to having 2 babies and the problem of terrorism, hunger, mass immigration, is solved. Also, if the USA had been more nationalistic they would have stopped Japanese, Korean and Chinese students from taking all of the know-how from American and European technical universities. On balance, and quite possibly, the west was damaged by that and sent from having Bell Labs engineers leading societies to having lawyers and MBAs who cannot do math "leading" societies that now are hungry for interesting STEM jobs and which are in massive debt. Take a country such as England with Darwin, Newton, and so many wonderful scientists: did they need foreign students or so many foreign professors to advance? If we are honest we must categorically answer that in the negative. To summarize this point, female inclusive values are one side of the story but male exclusive values are neglected by John Lennon type of beliefs in "global citizenship". Excluding people or discrimination takes place in the derivative professions of law, medicine, accountancy, management with many great people excluded based not on the absence of advanced degrees but on the absence of some "professional qualification" (Chartered Accountant diploma, etc) and prevented from practicing - it is many of these professionals who having received the benefit of the closed shop are pushing the "global citizen" ideology. There exist other points. The "invisible hand of Adam Smith" which underpins and justifies capitalism assumes that the generated wealth and employment will be spread GEOGRAPHICALLY NEAR the source. With six billion people earning less than 2 USD per day, the recipe of globalization is to make everyone poor. Hence, the national agenda signifies caution not to destroy the local society that generates the intellectual property and that invests in the education of its citizens. Almost all inventions have come from national R&D in pursuit of nationalistic causes, e.g. WWs, Moon Landing, Cold War, etc. Without these innovations entrepreneurs would be far less successful (there exist entrepreneurs among the Indians of the Amazon jungle who are as able as Bill Gates and Steve Jobs but who do not have technology). As with Signal Processing there is a balance to be found between locality of interpolation and globality of interpolation. We must prevent the landscape from becoming overly smooth and running rough of the important local details which are not the noise. Along these mathematical lines exists another argument. If we encourage too much fluidity of cross border operation to multinationals we easily create the scale free network, with employment and know-how nodes emerging in particular locations with most locations in the world de-industrialized. Nationalism acts as a damping force preventing the emergence of these geographical scale free clusters and protecting the employment of citizens. A final point is that not all cultures are equal but some are more honest than others. An honest culture risks the advent of corruption if it opens its borders and preaching "global citizen" is of grave danger to such countries. One must not overplay nationalism but identity is healthy to some point. Similarly, the globalists missed some points but their case is easier as it is more popular with young and idealistic people.

Nicely written, nothing to undermine about what you said on globalization. Since the origin of nations, we were brought up as nationalistic societies (do so religions, castes, traditions etc etc.,), Globalism is still primitive and needs a proper blue print (might take generations). Since, people need to raise above primitive traits which prevailed as nationalistic barrier such as religion*, identity to certain race, color, creed, caste, gender, rich and poor. Values as a human towards fellow human needs to be instilled (not just liberalism...as if fu*ck the society...i don't care traits), values towards nature and intellect needs to be imbibed. In short, in a long run globalisation is the way to prosper (but takes at-least few generations to raise above **religion, color, race and sex. This is the only way to reach spirituality, connect with the cosmic energy, become one with the nature and away from destruction. last but not the least saving the planet and overpopulation.

I personally think the entire debate was somewhat a big disadvantage against the opposition considering that they're not really fluent in speaking English. If you let a fluent English speaker debate against a non-English speaker, for sure most people would probably prefer the English speaker because obviously English is the universal language, and. Maybe if the opposition party had more fluent speakers, people would understand their position very well.

Park Jin-ha from team Korea was the most impressive of all. To me, she actually brings the team to a wonderful win. Because the first girl from Korea was actually confusing me due to the lack of order to present the arguments. Before Park Jin-ha came, I thought that Singaporeans will win but after her debate, I was sure that Koreans will win.
