Very few people have the clarity of mind to unpack and articulate concepts and issues like Hon. Min. Babatunde Raji Fashola. He has done it again in this interview! Very enlightening. I plan to watch it again. May be the Honourable Minister should consider going to the University classroom in his retirement years....his students will be mightily blessed.

I'm highly impressed with the Hon. minister. He could be able to call and pronounce the names of most towns and their intersections, it actually shows that he inspects and monitor, bit by bit, every project. I can actually testify that construction of road net work is going on fine. Fashola, keep it up.

This administration has worked. Not as we expected but they have worked considering where we were. However, they have their mishaps (which are obtainable in life and everywhere else in every government in the world). The security situation is one of the obvious shortfalls. Notwithstanding, I wish and pray we get someone better than Buhari in every way though. Cos, even though I like him, his limitations are glaring. But his love for Nigeria and good governance is unquestionable in my eyes.

A number of things struck me in this interview. Ngozi can be a good, if not a brilliant, penetrating interviewer, without the drag of the other male co-host she usually partners with. She just proved it here. Fashola certainly retains a healthy and hearty measure of the meaning, verve, understanding, expectations etc of good governance or the concept of it. It consoles the mind to know that he is still an intelligent, cool-headed and well coordinated administrator with the potential to deliver in a responsible manner, where seriousness and accountability count. Although, every once a while he gaffes or deliberately exposes himself to it. For example, while talking about the youths of Nigeria not allowing themselves to be used as pawns, he failed to point out that the youths of yore, he referred to, have selfishly refused to leave the stage for today’s youth. Maybe he was trying to avoid self indictment, because he’s quickly sliding into the group of yesterday’s youths. They remain one of our biggest problems. They go to any length to manipulate the situation, so that they cling to power forever, at the detriment of today’s youth, and by extension, that of the country. No matter how great a leader is, one of his Achilles heels is to be found, probably, in a hidden trait: not being able to, at least, prepare one potentially competent leader able to succeed him. But another big takeaway from this interview is, as a national office holder, or for that matter, any responsible official for any entity, there’s no room to talk carelessly or waffle. That’s essentially for those who are there, principally to enjoy the perks, ceremonies, trappings or paraphernalia of the office. And fortunately, their fruit bears them out, eventually. Legion of them are strewn around the country, already. These days, as global best practice, any office seeker must come with a great deal of seriousness and, if need be, with a self-imposed sense of responsibility, accountability and transparency. Listening to Fashola, this particularly came into sharp relief, when he spoke about the Nigerian 13 million housing deficit he purportedly inherited from one of his predecessors. He spoke passionately about the pains he went through to find the source of that figure, which was to form one of the bases of his foundation in terms of dealing with the Nigerian housing problems. He couldn’t just sweep it under the carpet nor make it up with another figure, but strenuously look for the source of that figure. It was that important! Even Royalties and titleholders bearing exalted positions in monarchies, nowadays, have to undergo serious preparations. If you’re not prepared don’t come! These are all issues germane to the heart of the Nigerian project, which as yet, most of our leaders at various levels, from the local to national, are not cut for. Hence the multitude of problems and failures which abound across the country.

But I think we youths of today have not really rise to the occasion. Everything he said about youth leading the country for many times is correct and you are also right them not wanting to leave the stage. But I also remember that power is sweet and nobody finds it easy to release power. We will be doing ourselves alot of disservice if we wait for them to leave. At least not with APC and PDP. We need to have our party as youths and we need to first win elections from the local government before talking about producing a President. We also have some issues that need to be dealt with, many people have poor value system. That is why many prefers to have bad people in government as long as they are getting a share of the cookie jar.

You nailed it. this interview was educative, serves as an eye opener and also refreshing to watch. I wish public position holders can be this detailed because it makes people understand the complexity of issues we are dealing with as a country, understand reasons for non performance if they are genuine and reasonable enough which I believe should serve as the stand point for criticism and measuring progress. But then you realize that most politicians are not even cerebral enough to understand what they are meant to do or how it works, all they care about is how to look for loop holes to enrich their pockets. I just hope we can start to learn this things by understanding the capacities of these politicians across board, so when they sell their cheap campaigns we easily just discard them and identify with those who really know what they need to do. Oh poverty and hardship is another factor politicians use to dissuade the majority... SIGH!!! I just hope we can do better.

Mr Fashola, why, how did lagos lbadan expressway, a 127km road cost 311bn (560million pounds sterling)?? In the UK one mile of highway cost less than 500,000, half a million pounds sterling. Which means 80mile, 127km highway would cost less than 40,000000 (40 million) pounds sterling in the UK. Yet in Nigeria federal government spent 560 million pounds sterling.... NNPC is planning to spend 652 bn in building more than 1800km of roads in Nigeria, which means what federal government spent on lagos lbadan alone is enough to construct 800 km, not 80km roads in Nigeria....Thank you.

Without defending him, I think there is a lot to factor in when it comes to construction of road. Firstly, you need to understand that the money you mentioned is èxchange rate and remember that pounds to naira has never been stable. Secondly, the texture of the soil has to be taken into consideration, knowing that it could be rocky or sand unlike the UK soil. Though we tend to be spending more which is unnecessary.

He's definitely wrong about the lack investment capital. Capital markets are desperate to invest - Nigeria is just not a very sound environment. As for his contention that the rail lines and air traffic controls cannot be provided privately, he did not really give a good reason. Citing places like the UK is undermined by the fact that they have a competent, well funded government, while we don't. I mean, that's how we got here in the first place. I bet if the UK had lived through 60 years of government failure and infrastructural decay they'd be considering a majority PPP funded position too. (in fact they did do something similar when Thatcher privatised rail and mines)

The complicity in contract awards, funding and execution against oversight function in the country has been a worrisome development. If we can rule out corruption against competency over time and let accountability be the guiding principle to evaluate what's happening to date, facts and figures would shock most Nigerians to know the mess behind the scene this long. It has been a seething chemistry of too many opposing elements in the public and private construction sector, a mix-up of competent contractors and bunch of those fronted likewise with hidden interest about to come to light when the anticipated new dawn in 2023 caught the nation's coffer looters pants down. It remains to be seen whether oncoming elections could actualize the mandate for good governance, accountability and prudence with credible leadership.

The idea of waiting to conduct a census in 2022 to determine the basis for housing shortfall is ludicrous because we already have the rough estimate of the population: and not amusing to wait until 2022 census. Most importantly, we shouldn't be importing mere toothpicks, mosquito nets and tomato puree and many more products; instead we should be investing in manufacturing those PRODUCTS locally in order to create more jobs - where are the plans to do so asap. For example, the PPP deal that gave away 60% of ports to foreign investors is far from an excellent deal according to innovative opportunity that exists to negotiate for up to 20%; and subcontracting must be done by main contractor and not by authorities: I am one of the most respected negotiators.

@@josephkarunwi577 What is different between 2+2 and 1+3. Let's speak to first and second paragraphs of the comment I posted earlier. For example, under the PMB regime, we're still importing petty stuff that could have been produced locally. It doesn't take years on ending to set factories to produce mere 🍅 puree, tooth pick and mosquito net locally. Please Joseph, speak to the docs I highlighted - the paragraphs 1 and 2 of the comment I posted earlier.

half truth(s), same old story, he said, "maybe the youth are still in power". On his endears camera? he admonished the youth not become a pawn, but at some time in our graves, we will probably understand the essence of saying I was wrong, I made a mistake, instead of blaming the youth and politicising every important matter like the #endsars, which could have helped us to reconcile or to heal as a member of this State (maybe country). On the other hand, the Minister sounded a bit aware of his office, and he is relatively better than most of his other colleagues in the current Nigeria political setup Nigeria.

What does the minister meant about where was the federal government in previous administration when state were constructing roads? Is he saying no road was done by fg then? There is little to show in the 6 years of his being a super minister. The interviewer confirmed the assertion.

@@olofinbayo9909 I heard him quite well! He said " where was the federal government then, when states were building federal roads"? Is Fashola saying Nigeria roads are better than they were before this government? Have you seen deplorable highways that only needs rehabilitation which ferma used to do then, the administration failed to fund ferma thus no one is carrying out minor maintenance needed on the roads. They wait till the roads gets to a sorry state, then borrow to fix it. There is nothing extraordinary in what he is doing. Did Fashola fix the roads within the streets in Lagos?
