Sound analysis. Though Rotus lacks proper knowledge of the effects of the subsidy removal on the poorest of the poor. It is not about him having money to buy fuel which we all know he belongs to the middle class, its about what happens to the poorest of the poor?. They should be a short term provision to cushion the effect on the poor just like Rufai rightly argued. Also, some economic measures should be put in place to make the price of fuel competitive that includes giving licences to some oil firms to setup modular refineries and standard refineries to keep the market open and competitive and in a way shuts monopoly. Monopoly is a monster; let the government not create a bigger monster by trying to kill a monster. The government is building their hope on Dangote refinery- it ought not be so. Give licence to other indigenous companies to run modular refineries and standard refineries to help saturate the market with fuel so as to bring about checks and balances on price in the market. Our economy is built on oil so leaving the strength of the economy for a single firm to dictate breed disaster.

@okeoja4447 Well said but your point is still not valid like the person you replied. People of likeminds were ask to speak in favour or against and u are here talking about sentiments or emotions? Rotus does business reporting for a living, so there is no way he won't come with economic facts but most times, economic facts nd principles application doesn't solve the real human existential issues. This is not "The higher the price the lower the quantity demanded". There is no way you will speak in support of suffering masses and wouldn't sound emotional because humanity comes b4 anything even though economic realities doesn't regard those sentiments.

Rufai is not just a seasoned journalist but also am sound Economist. Sir you are versatile. This makes clear sense. Rotus talking about the risk of transferring subsidy by providing palliative cannot be substantiated. You can't leap from 185 naira to 515 niara (almost 300% increase) cost of fuel and expect the low income earners not to feel the brunt without something to cushion the effect. Unless you want to deploy the heard-immunity style- where everyone suffers the brunt and the weakest can cave in along the line until stability is attained. There should definitely be a palliative to manage the effect of complete removal of subsidy. Such sensitive issue as removal of fuel subsidy should be done with well thought out plan so as not to jeopardize its intended gains.

@segunbenson2121 Жыл бұрын
What facts are you talking about is it when half of the population is dead before you know the decision is wrong. Nobody is supporting subsidy but the way is done is wrong and this will lead to serious chaos because 70% of Nigeria survive on a minimum wage. Thus tell me how do you want a family with 2 children and a wife to survive when the cost of transportation alone have taken 50% of the monthly salary, and there is also feeding, utilities bills, clothing, house rent, etc that the family needs to attend too. You people are not seeing beyond your nose you don't know that little by little you are encouraging the average Nigerians to engage in illegal act for them to be able to cater for their family.You guys want corruption to go but you don't know you making it worse. The right thing to do is put adequate measures in place then do the needful. I don't understand the economic bullshit you guys are talking about that at the end of the day will not work. See all the stupid policies CBN governor made during Buhari regime and still yet we are in huge debts, the FX keep rising, none of it works.

Solid argument and analysis by Rotus. The summary is that “it gets darker first before morning arrives”. I’m hoping his speech and the follow-up actions in the first 100 days in office will spark sustainable economic gains. On to the next key thing - the appointment of aides and cabinet ministers
@curiocityplus8704

If you look at it from this angle, it sounds noble. But the question is, do we really need to experience the darkness if there are things we can do to cushion the effects? That's Rufai's argument. Rotus is just talking numbers that doesn't translate to the realities of the common man, while Rufai is talking from the perspective of the Nigerian who has been through hell under buhari and now has to return to hardship on the very first day of Tinubu's administration. There's courage and then there is outright wickedness and tone deafness.

@@curiocityplus8704 Interesting perspective you bring to the discussion. Yes, the darkness is inevitable. Unlike developing countries, we don’t have the luxury of funds or time to prioritize “cushioning the effects”. We can’t even afford to wait an extra month. By almost all metrics, Nigeria is far worse off than we were 10 years ago. There’s no babysitting. What we need is someone who’ll aggressively take the bull by the horn- pull off the band aids. Not just in respect to fuel subsidy but also to infrastructure development, fiscal policy, exchange rate, etc. To put it in Mr President’s word: “Hit the ground running on day 1.”
@curiocityplus8704
@curiocityplus8704 Жыл бұрын
@@kenechukwuokwunze6740 interesting take too, but have you stopped to ask yourself this question, is subsiby the only source of wastage in the administration of Nigeria. Go back to the budget of the last ten years and see how mush it cost Nigeria to run the government. Why can't we start there? Why subsidy alone? It's abit delusional to think this government cares about the welfare of the common man.

These two men are both smart and well educated. But Rotus needs to understand that Nigeria is not yet in the position for a government to just wake up and implement a policy, without first putting in place a good reform that will enable the low class citizens to adjust to whatever policy the government decides to implement. Rotus also needs to understand that not all Nigerians are well privileged enough to be able to survive and wait until the good returns of the fuel subsidy removal. So the government should have just taken the whole process slowly until they have fully provided a good standard of living for every citizen. The removal of fuel subsidy is a good policy for the future economic growth of Nigeria. But how many Nigerias will survive before the good times?! And how sure the government wont use the funds for their own selfish and personal ordeals. May God help us all. 🙏🏻

Economists is the realist view. How much do you think the masses affect Nigeria’s cash flow, maybe by 5%. No investment, no economic growth, less employment. That’s why a common man knows nothing about the market. If subsidy has to go, it has to go. Rufai is not an expert, he’s talking from half knowledge. We all know half knowledge is a disaster.

Both points are valid. A good leader should be compassionate enough to look at the immediate impact of his actions while he is also thinking about the long run. The people have to be alive to enjoy the benefits in the long run. A good leader must always look out for the BEST means to achieve his goal. Is this the best way to remove subsidy? For me, I think there are better ways the president should have done it. It looks to me like he wanted to become president of Nigeria only to remove subsidy. Why the rush? I hope the president will use the same determination he is using to remove fuel subsidy to remove corruption and insecurity in Nigeria.

I am recommending Rotus to BAT, to be among the youths to be recruited in his government in the economic sector. He gave a better analysis of economic ideology. However, while i agree with Rufai to an extent, the fact remains that we need to work on the long term plan and not the short plan. Its fear of the effect of subsidy that hinders Buhari from removing it.

Rufai's points made perfect sense to me! BEFORE removing fuel subsidy, a sensible government should have conducted an impact analysis, understood the economic impact and how to offset all deleterious consequences with necessary effective palliatives. As the economy grows (hopefully) the palliatives would naturally be tapered off because fewer individuals would need them anyway. The UNCONSTITUTIONAL president, Tinubu, simply made the speech for political prowess WITHOUT studying impact analysis data on what to do to offset skyrocketing fuel prices and the domino effect that will spiral into even higher inflation reflected in goods and services. Nigerians better prepare their minds for a rough ride with their new UNCONSTITUTIONAL, ailing president.

@@stelly_4160Please read the Nigerian Constitution and hopefully you will understand that Bola Tinubu is an UNCONSTITUTIONAL president. So, there's nothing irresponsible about my comments. Do you actually understand the meaning of the word "irresponsible"? Obviously, you didn't follow the discussions, because if you did, my comments were clearly about them. Individuals like you who would support a career criminal and occultist like Tinubu to be an UNCONSTITUTIONAL president are indeed the ones that need healing.

@@jcjohnson628 A "career criminal and occultist" you said??? I could see that it will take the compassionate abundance of God's tender mercies to redeem your soul from bitterness, hatred and disdain for a man who doesn't belong to your cult group nor made himself the President on Nigeria. The man you ran down with your "mouthish diarrhoea" had an unprecedented career with the best multinational companies in the world, he rose to the peak of his career with enviable and superlative records of excellence before resigning to join politics. This your imaginary cultist, till date wears different colours of dresses while I suppose your saintly Messiah is confined to a lifestyle of black dresses for the rest of his life. We know who the cultist is. The one you called a criminal has no known record of patronising tax havens.... hahahahahaha! nor invested public monies in his family business. See, this your "unconstitutional President" has never in his entire life been convicted of any form of corrupt practices anywhere in the world. As for the constitutionality of his Presidency, the case is before the court, so keep your subjudiced, monopolistic and warped opinion of the constitution to yourself, till the very custodians of the constitution pronounces what that part you referred to means. I can assure you, if the hand of God is upon Nigeria's President- Bola Tinubu, whom you do much detest, you and your co-travellers shall perpetually suffer defeat. Go and repent!

Rotus, you are speaking English. The reality is what happens to the common man on the streets and how he is able to put food on his table. You cannot make a statement without putting things in place to alleviate the adverse effects of your actions. So, because you can pay the high pump price does not mean that the road side barber that needs fuel for his " I pass my neighbor" generator can. Removal of fuel subsidy is long overdue but it must be implemented with a safety plan to carry along the less privileged in the society. Point of correction, Rotus, Obamacare is not funded by taxes on the rich in America. Everyone that works in America pays tax.
