I rushed here immediately I saw Prof name Truth be said, we don't need palliatives, we need an enabling environment to flourish. How can I fill my car tank with 70% of my salary when i have other bills to settle We barely feed twice daily and my kids are adolescents How about those who have toddlers that need good meals for proper brain and physical health . These are more damaging than what you think Prof Bag of rice is 130k Rice is 1% of items needed for livelihood. Like you said Prof, The world is watching

The leaders rode Peugeot cars, there were very short convoys, very few hangers-on, and Nigerian-made items of clothing, food, Nigeria Airways patronage, etc. Today, it's imported SUVs, imported Swiss fabric for Agbada, foreign airlines, etc...I hear a top man known to us all in Abuja wears a 150k-dollar Patek Philippe wristwatch. Professor Yusuf is a distinguished academic renowned for his unwavering commitment to addressing the challenges facing the nation. As a vocal advocate for good governance, he consistently provides objective and insightful critiques of societal issues, echoing the sentiments of many Nigerians. His bold stance highlights the urgent need for more citizens to step forward and voice their concerns, rather than remaining passive observers in the face of national decline. It is imperative for individuals to emulate the courage of thought leaders such as Professor Yusuf, Professor Udenta Udenta, Dele Farotimi, Chidi Odinkalu, Ikenga Imo, Segun Showunmi, and other outspoken advocates who have dared to confront pressing national issues. At this critical juncture, as Nigeria faces the risk of systemic collapse, collective action, and bold voices are essential to advocate for meaningful reform and a sustainable future.

The tragic stampede at the rice-sharing events in Nigeria can be analyzed using the three categories of causes in Work Health and Safety (WHS). This analysis provides a structured approach to understanding how such incidents occur and how they can be prevented in the future. 1. Immediate (Direct) Causes - Definition: These are the visible, immediate factors that triggered the stampede. - In this context: - Overcrowding at the venue, as an overwhelming number of people gathered for the rice-sharing event. - Poor crowd control, leading to panic and a rush among attendees. - Absence of clear instructions or proper queue management for the distribution process. - Outcome: The lack of organization in the crowd created a chaotic situation, directly causing the stampede. 2. Underlying (Indirect) Causes - Definition: These are systemic or procedural issues that contributed to the immediate causes. - In this context: - Economic Hardship: Widespread poverty and desperation due to Nigeria’s perilous economic conditions compelled many people to attend the event, even if it meant facing dangerous circumstances. - Event Planning Issues:The organizers underestimated the crowd size, did not set up barriers, or implement safety measures like trained personnel to manage the gathering. - Lack of Awareness: Attendees may not have been informed about safe procedures or an orderly process for collecting the rice. - Outcome: These factors created an environment where chaos could easily erupt. 3. Root Causes - Definition: These are deeper, systemic problems that give rise to the underlying and immediate causes. - In this context: - Bad Governance: The root cause of the economic peril is linked to ineffective leadership, corruption, and mismanagement of resources, leading to widespread poverty and food insecurity. - Ineffective Safety Regulations: There might be weak or poorly enforced policies regarding public gatherings, making it difficult to ensure safety at large events. - Societal Inequality: A long-standing gap between the wealthy and the poor has exacerbated desperation among vulnerable populations. - Outcome: Addressing root causes like governance and systemic poverty is essential to prevent such tragedies in the future. Conclusion and Prevention To prevent similar incidents, interventions should address all three levels of causes: - Immediate Causes: Ensure proper crowd control measures, trained personnel, and safety protocols at public events. - Underlying Causes: Improve event planning, provide adequate resources, and educate the public on safety. - Root Causes: Tackle governance issues, reduce poverty, and invest in social safety nets to minimize desperation. This tragedy underscores the importance of a proactive approach to safety and governance. [By Engr Vicmario Ugbeni .

These happened in the southern parts of the country and not in the northern part of the country. Sadly, Tinubu, who is from the southern part of the country, is the president. This speaks a lot of volumes.

The biggest issue in Nigeria is systems and processes at all levels. No matter how much the government budgets, if you can't track it, you're wasting your time. Our leaders should, at all levels of leadership, establish appropriate systems and processes. These organisers should have given out numbers weeks ahead in different locations. Then, do lottery and announce the winners on the radio or tv, with the days certain numbers can come for pick up, making sure the number coming on each day is managable. On arruval, they will stay outside and come in when their number is announced. That way, crowding would be avoided. RIP to the dead.

APC, why are you misplacing priorities? You can't resolve the issue of insecurity and feeding your people, but you are building the coastal road. Really? This is terrible.

Blessing your community in the East during Christmas is not new. The level of hunger this year and hidden illnesses that people don’t even know of due to weakness is the problem. Definitely things could be done better but all the distributors meant good for people.

Yorubas have finished Nigeria. I’m not being tribal here but it’s true. Tinubu is not running a Nigerian government or even a Southern government,. He’s running a complete Yoruba government. People say Buhari did the same, but I can boldly tell whoever cares that Buhari’s government was 💯 Northern, not tribal. That was why we advocated for a president from the South so that Southerners can get a sense of belonging. Unfortunately, the Yorubas have become too greedy over it and as a result, what we see is incompetence and tribal bigotry everywhere.

So the Yorubas are the one enjoying in Nigeria, no hunger in Yoruba land? I am sorry my brother your type are good tools for manipulation by politicians. I doubt if you live in Nigeria otherwise you will know that corrupt leaders in Nigeria cut across every ethnic group and average Nigerians irrespective of their tribes are in the same pot of soup. Please my brother na everyone they suffer o no be only Ibo!

Why impose bans on rice importation in Nigeria when your own people are dying of hunger and lacking access to basic food? A truly smart government would prioritize ensuring food security for its citizens first. Import all food, including rice, even if it means allowing it with reasonable duties. The focus should be on saving lives and feeding the population before channeling resources into building roads or other infrastructure. It’s shameful that President Tinubu is highlighting this failure as a legacy of former President Buhari, instead of taking immediate steps to correct it. People need food, not excuses.

Prof. Usman, you spoke well as usual. This is the effect of Buhari administration that preferred Herders to Farmers, now Nigeria can eat the cows. Farmers killed everywhere for the past nine years, what do you expect, and the APC government adding fuel with their recklessness and looting.
