We were told by our elders that the osu caste system was more of a justice system which curbed criminality. I'm from Okpanam in Delta state. In times past, osu was practiced in my home town and environs, i even remember people pointing to a family where one of their ancestors had committed murder, it was said that the man and his descendants were treated as an osu. They were basically ostracized. It's all relaxed now due to civilisation and the dying off of the older generation who hold this belief. Okechukwu might need to ask more questions about the osu caste system.

Every enlightened Igbo wants the osu caste system abolished -- most of us have long abolished it in our personal dealings with osu people. However, the type of lie that Okechukuwu told here is what irritates the Dialas (free borns) who are resistant to abolishing the caste. Osu was not a criminal enterprise, to the contrary, it was partly a punitive system which checked criminality wherever it existed (there were no prisons in Igbo land then). Were osu still in practice in Igbo land of today, there would be no armed robbers, kidnappers, 419ners, child molesters, rapists, murders, etc. The misapplication of osu is only to the effect that innocent children sired by osu people automatically became osu permanently and generation after generation (similar to Christians' original sin of the bible); that is unjust and should not have been allowed to be the case. There is more to the osu caste system than can be addressed here but the reader must know that Okechukwu lied in almost everything he said here -- that lying is why his campaign for eradicating this system is not succeeding. Above all, his summoning Christian spiritualists to his gathering is not going to have any effect on anyone who is conservative enough to still subscribe to upholding the osu caste system -- such people have more faith in our ancestors than on oyibo's ancestry of Christianity. To most of us Igbos, the osu caste system belongs in the past and plays no role in all our dealings with any Igbo, but to those Igbos still observing it, Okechukwu's method prolongs the life of the caste because Dialas (he erroneously called them Amadi) do not accept that their ancestors were the villains instead of people who protected their society from outlaws and murders. Truth is what will permanently kill the osu system and the earlier the Okechukwus stopped pandering to other Nigerians with falsehood disseminating, the quicker the anachronistic caste system died naturally. The two girl-anchors are pathetically ignorant of the subject matter, yet they took a position already by dubbing it a discriminatory practice. Okechukwu's story on how someone became an osu is stupid, childish, and mendacious to the core. He is going to turn off liberals who want this system abolished if he keeps reeling out falsehoods that indict Dialas. It was thoughtless of him to say that anything that comes from Eastern part of Nigeria is backward -- he must be the epitome of that backwardness.

There has been a law in Eastern Nigeria since the 1950s that outlawed the osu caste-this law has periodically been improved, in 1966 and in the Second Republic. Yes, it was problematic for my family to accept (in the 1980s) but once she started reeling out those beautiful children, my family elders damned that custom and accepted their daughter, son-in-law, and grandchildren. Nobody has shown or would be allowed to show any disdain or discrimination to my family since then. I speak on this matter from a position of knowledge and open mindedness, unlike the fellow who is hustling to attract donors to his NGO or easy emigration out of Nigeria while posing as an oppressed caste person. He lied barefacedly as to how people became osu except the part where he linked its progression to bloodline. Every society in the past had one thing or the other that today’s people view with chagrin, but you count on the opportunistic Igbo like this fellow to milk it fraudulently, without caring how his opportunism damages the entire modern Igbo society.
