Dante placed Aristotle in the first circle of Hell (Limbo) with all the virtuous "non-believers". This circle isn't Hell proper in the comedy. The first circle of hell in Dante, where sins are punished, is the second circle, where lust is punished. Homer, Horace, Lucan, Ovid, Electra, Hector, Aeneas, Caesar, Saladdin, Socrates, Plato, Democritus, Diogenes, Anaxagoras, Thales, Empedocles, Heraclitus, Zeno, Dioscorides, Orpheus, Tullius, Linus, Seneca, Euclid, Ptolemy, Hippocrates, Avicenna, Galen, Averroes and especially Virgil who guides him through Hell (Inferno) and most of the Purgatory are also in Limbo. He calls Aristotle the master of those.

Helpful as always. Just a question: don't you think secondary sources distort philosophers' ideas? You said you found these books helpful in your own intellectual journey and recommend them to your students, so I'm assuming you don't think that, at least these specific books, distorted Aristotle. But a response would further clarify your view on secondary sources for philosophy in general. Thanks

I recommend reading the original works of Aristotle. Of course, this would mean a mastery of Greek. However, in the case of Aristotle there are many translations and commentaries that I do think are accurate.

@@SaiyadNizamuddinAhmad Thanks a lot. Just to make sure we both understood each other; so you’re saying it’s a good idea to read Aristotle himself (English translations) and the Oxford/Cambridge commentaries and Companions/Handbooks as guides to understand Aristotle better, or should one read ONLY Aristotle himself (English translations) and try to understand him without the help of these Companions/Handbooks?

Hello I was wondering if you could introduce some books of Aristotle in persian, or arabic. Tnx for the reading list though; it was awesome

Unfortunately, I am not familiar with the translations in modern times of Aristotle into those languages.

Doctor Ahmad, you forgot to talk about thomistic commentaries on Aristotle!
@pseudoplotinus Жыл бұрын
I think these were books pertaining to Aristotle himself and his thought. Thomism is almost a whole other domain, or addition to that.
@SaiyadNizamuddinAhmad Жыл бұрын
Correct. In my De Anima reading list video, I do talk about commentaries including those of Thomas Aquinas.
