Hey Hawaii hope your weathers better than Scotland here it’s windy & wet! Random question not related to video whatsoever,sorry. I named my daughter Ani ( we pronounce it Annie) the baby book said it was a Hawaiian name and since you’re the 1st actual Hawaiian I’ve come across I need to ask if this is true or just made up?! It’s meant to mean beautiful, which she is so thanx in advance! Lol.x sorry Arith! X

Aloha Father Konstantinos Hawaii 😜❤️Many thanks for reply. Ok so errrr, soft & gentle breeze she is NOT, more like a fast moving full force hurricane!! Is that a name specific to Hawaii as I haven’t stumbled across many others sharing the name? Thnx again from a very wet and dreich West coast of Scotland.x ☔️☔️

Arith. I just looked through the comments. ( I don't always as i often click straight to the next video). I was surprised at how many folk seem to find it necessary to correct, judge and nit pick. I am sorry for that. There seems to be a pervasive lack of gratitude and emphasis on ego, these days. I think your vids are wonderful. I love your voice and accent and i greatly respect your extensive knowledge and fluency in English. Much respect to you.

Hi Arith, when I was a child both parents would engage with us with ‘dunk apple’ which was tied to the persecution and murder of witches. We use to do it two ways, 1st Large Bowl of water with an apple for each person bobbing in it, and a bowl of flour next to it. Each person would take it in turns to try and take a bite out of the apples, if they got a bite that was it until next go, but if you didn’t you had to put your head in the flour. The one who bit more out their apple won😉. The second version was to do with hanging witches, a piece of string was tied between Table/chairs and apples where tied to the string and we would have to lie on our back’s underneath the apples and try and bite them again. No one went Trick or treating we stayed in and told each other ghost stories. I am not a fan of trick or treating as I have always believed this is a family time👍

Arith the word Samhain is an Irish Gaelic word for Summer's end and is pronounced sow-in with the sow part to rhyme with now. Bonfires were lit and people and animals would pass between them for cleansing. Nuts and apples were traditional gifts and symbolic of always having sustenance in the winter. We still in the UK have toffee apples and have a game called apple bobbing in communities that still adhere to British customs at this time. Of course I am disappointed with the absence of Mr Thorstein whom I feel gives more depth to your videos and also no tag for idag? An interesting thing just came to me. When we are teaching our children to say thank you or thanks we say and teach them to say ta. Maybe this comes from our Scandinavian ancestry?
@ArithHärger7 жыл бұрын
Well, it's quite possible that it might come from Scandinavian ancestry indeed. A lot of english words come from the Anglo-Saxon and also from Old Norse. Right here where I live, there are a few traditions to jump over a bonfire and stuff, but things are dying rapidly, unfortunately :/ Mr. Thorstein will eventually return when he has a mind for it; most of the time he is raiding somewhere around the northern coast of France :p

Seems the grammer/pronunciation police have taken over the comments! Good grief guys, Arith puts time and effort into these videos. What difference does it make how a word is said? The message stays the same. No reason to be so petty! Be nice or be quiet. I may be a little late to comment on this video but these kind of comments bother me. Nobody deserves to be hit at for such nonsense when the work produced is not affected by it in any way

It’s pronounced sow en not Samhain the word etymology is Early Gaeilge / Irish language. And no that is not Gaelic, which is Scottish.
@jkl5712 Жыл бұрын
A pet peeve of mine is when people say Samhain was on the Eve of All Saints or October 31st. No it was not. Celtic tribes did not use a ROMAN Calendar. Its mentioned by ancient Roman and Greeks that Celtic tribes began their months on the dark moon and held their festivals on the 3 phases of the Fullmoon. The Church borrowed customs and traditions of the pagans and adapted them to their own festivals and calendar. This myth keeps getting spread by pagans across the board.

sow-in or sov-in, not sam-hain
@luxonlex44536 жыл бұрын
Sow-e-in, is a Scottish (Picta) / Irish Gaelic annunceation. Sam-Häin, would be indicative of the Scandinavian dialects. Both are correct, however it is a great way to see who may know the original Scotch/Irish Sow-e-in pronunciation. Both countries were relatively close, and the Norse were known for traveling. Traditions, customs, religions and language were traded freely amongst the indigenous peoples of the area. So, I would not consider the annunceation incorrect, just different. 👍🏽😁
@billnicks23626 жыл бұрын
@@luxonlex4453 no, it is 100% incorrect. The original is Irish, eventually transferred to scotland. Nothing to do with the picts either
@luxonlex44536 жыл бұрын
@@billnicks2362 ,the Picts were/are the Scotch, more specifically the highlanders of Eastern and Northern Scotland. You are indubatably correct 100%, there are no other pronunciations except Sow-e-in, as every part of the pagan, monotheistic & polytheistic earth based religions and practices are based on black and white interpritations and always being either right or wrong. None of those traditions are known for being open minded to alternate annunceations or ideas. You win! Have you considered Christianity? It may be a good fit, as the "Do's" and "Don'ts" of that practice are pretty much etched in stone (Tablets, to be exact). They are not very tolerant or open minded and they certainly do not like peritioners questioning authority. You may like it. 👍🏽⛪👍🏽
@billnicks23626 жыл бұрын
grow up for fuck sake will you. I know what the picts are and considering they spoke a P_celtic language for one and are irrelevant to the argument. As for your pict=scot. The word scot comes from scotti, the classical latin term for Irish/gaels, i.e "Scotland" literally means "land of the gaels/ Irish" due to the colonisation. secondly the picts have nothing to do with the current argument. The name for samhain originated in Ireland, so the correct pronunciation lies there. No matter what mental gymnastics you perform, sam-hain does not figure in any way. As for your strawman argument about monotheism vs polytheism, again nothing to do with this so you can use your imagination as to where to shove it.

@@billnicks2362 , I find it funny when certain individuals get triggered over superfoulious inconsistencies and then feel the need to "correct" everyone around them. It reveals more about the individual correcting everyone, than it does about the person making the perceived mistake. Is it a Tomato or a Tomäto,... let's fight over it!!! Well done,... 👏👏👏 "Bravo!" I would not fault anyone for pronouncing Samhain phonetically as opposed to the Scottish/Irish Gaelic annunceation of Sow-e-in. To nit-pick over something so petty is truly pointless. FYI, I did not even read your response beyond "Grow the fuck up". I am sure it is chalk full of copy and paste entomologies from at least three Google searches,... just to prove your right. What part of my statement "You Win" did you not understand? Again,... You Win!!! I will Facebook the annunceation Sow-e-in for the spelling Samhain and cite you as the resource of authority, so that everyone knows that Bill Nicks was right. Feel better,... want that cookie now?

your lectures are great because they are a must. although snorri revealed that odin married geirhild in the autum he didn't give the date because it coincided with the last day of samhein (november 15). the church prohibited all viking festivals and substuited christian festivals instead. samhein was replaced with all saints' night which was a night of prayer for the departed. the samhein was named after odin who was the angel samael because he was the chief necromancer and war deity. samael was the biblical serpent who fathered cain and his twin sister. thor and his twin sister samantha were born on the 15th of august which was later christianized as saint mary's day. samantha was named after odin the angel samael. however, her name was changed to sybil and sif by the church because viking festivals and names associated with them were prohibited until the seventeenth century. meytal menkin, rechovot, israel
