Some Yew trees remain alive and evergreen during 4,000 - 5,000 year or even longer. This species is a modern living witness of the mammoth age - Taxus cuspidata (Lat).

Great video! The yew tree is one of my favourite things and I’m a tiny bit obsessed with it. If anyone is interested there is a great book entitled ‘Yew’ by Fred Hageneder which goes into great detail about the many taxonomical, biological, cultural, mythological aspects of this absolutely extraordinary tree. Here is some info from the book: Yew has extraordinary capabilities of vegetative reproduction. It can produce root suckers to enable new trees to emerge from the roots, has the ability to regrow from cuttings, and also produces so-called adventitious growth, when buds appear anywhere on the stem, most often near the base of the trunk where it might be exposed to direct sunlight. Such abilities are highly unusual for ‘conifers’. Another unusual ability of the yew is branch layering, a process that involves the lower branches growing towards the ground, then taking root. Another is the growth of vertical branches out of other branches or out of a tumbled trunk, as well as the ability to encase a decaying trunk with secondary wood growth for stability. Most astonishing of all is yew’s power to grow an ‘interior root’ inside a hollowing old trunk, a structure that eventually roots itself in the ground inside the hollow tree, then begins to replace the old decaying trunk until it makes a ‘new’ tree. This latter function enables a single yew tree to renew itself from the inside out; when this occurs no wood on the tree will be as old as the living being. The discovery that this species has the capability to do this has forced science or at least botany - to rethink its definition of ‘life’ for plants. Is a tree that has completely renewed itself still the ‘same’ tree? Is a living organism truly represented by its body, or by its genetic code or by something else? Is life more than what we can see and touch- and measure?

I had been considering purchasing this book on Yew... if you don't mind me asking...aside from all the fascinating biology and science facts, is it good on the spiritual / mythology side? I'm looking to dive deeper on that than most websites or sources go... Thank you!!!
@warboats3 жыл бұрын
@@beaagudo7798 it does indeed, my friend, each chapter examines a different aspect of the tree in distinction, so for example chap. 9 examines the ”metaphysical yew” and begins with a look at the etymology of the trees name, chap. 10 examines the ”sacred yew” (this is the chapter I think you'd find most interesting) and looks at the tree's spiritual significance and religious history, there's also chaps. on its aesthetic, political, poisonous etc etc aspects. It's actually a brilliant structure to the book because you don't have to read in order, you can read whatever chapter you find most interesting! Also, at the end of the book it has timeline basically summing up everything significant about the yew's history and our interactions with it that we know about so far! Sorry if I sound too enthusiastic about it but it really is the most interesting book I've read in a very long time, there's certainly alot of info in it that isn't available online and just the way the info is laid out is very thoughtful and well structured. I hope this helps and I hope you benefit from it if you end up getting it! Cheers

While the Wolfhook, which was used to protect cattle and your belongings from wolves and thievery, then you used the upright Nautiz. I constantly have idle thoughts, then I meditate on the runes, or write poetry. Like the fact, that all the runes are made of Kenaz (Fire) and Isha (Ice) Spirit and Matter. Thank you, for being around, you're as bendable and strong as a Yew Bow. Never change! Btw, if you convert the German word DU(You) into a bindrune, it would be really Stronk, if you draw it like Eihwaz, that is. X^D

I'm not sure that Yggdrasil was a Yew tree! One of the strongest characteristics of the world tree, is that it is a honey or mead tree. Yggdrasil drips mead/honey, and there is the goat Heiðrún at the bottom of the tree whose udders give mead. This is an ancient Indo-European theme, that Honey/nectar falls from the heavens, it is very common in Greek, Roman and even Vedic traditions. Bees were thought to collect honey, not make it. The Ash tree was known as a honey tree, because mature Ash trees on hot days can spontaneously drip a sweet substance that can be fermented, it is called manna. There are many traditions linking the Ash tree with honey. The nymphs who nursed the infant Zeus, were called Meliae, which means Ash tree , and Meli is the Greek word for honey. There is even a goat in the story, they fed him on the milk of the goat Amalthea and honey. Sometimes they hid in the boughs of an ash tree where he could not be found on earth, in the sea or in the sky. Goats milk is mixed with Haoma in the Zoroastrian Haoma ritual. I believe Haoma/Soma replaced the original IE sacred drink Mead. In Norse tradition we can see that mead originated in the Heavens and mead of course is made from honey. There is ample evidence of an ancient IE tradition that honey comes from the heavens, hence the drink made from it brings us closer to the Gods and immortality. There seems to be an IE tradition that the Ash tree is connected to the origin of humanity, as the Greeks said, ''the Ash tree seed of mankind''. Infant Zeus is sheltered in an Ash, the first man was made from a piece of Ash wood, a man and woman emerge from an Ash tree after Ragnarök and infants in Britain and other places in Europe, used to be given a spoonful of Ash sap as their first meal. I suppose it's possible that two traditions; one about the Ash as a honey tree, and another tradition about the Yew tree could have been conflated, but simply saying that Yggdrasil is an evergreen and therefore a Yew; seems optimistic. Yggdrasil is not a normal Ash tree so it might be evergreen. No one would ever call a poisonous Yew tree, a honey or mead tree would they?! The etymology of ''Yggdrasil'' is usually interpreted as ''steed of Ygg'' (Ygg being a name of Odin) not Yew column!

I've gone through this in 2013. I've lost pretty much all my friends within a few months! I no longer had any interest in pursuing a career, having family and stuff like that. I unofficially became an outcast within my family.... But the gifts are immense and these tiny problems will pale in comparison. You see most people have no clue what the hell they're doing with their lives. They just go with the flow. Living a half dead life like zombies. This "death" will give you a completely new meaning.
