I believe it so. I forgot to say in here but it seems hamrammr (strong of hamr) seems to also refer to people who show signs of "normality", whilst eigi einhamr seems to refer to people who didn't have control over their emotions or over their psycological self and as such it was seen as an imbalance. I must explore more on this part in the future.

@@heimdallswife6102 All three of the Synoptic Gospels describe Jesus going into a spirit flight after 40 days alone in the desert and fasting. That is Shamanic Initiation using the folk forms of that region to describe it. The universal form is still there. He is brought in through rites by John the Baptist, then goes to journey and face his shadow which is desire for wealth and power and fame. He rejects it and is then goes on a spirit flight with protecting spirits. After this journey he returns and becomes a healer. Yes, Jesus was a shaman, and yes "shaman" is a modern term a Russian guy used to describe the role of an individual doing these things in a Indigenous polar tribe. Does that matter? For me it does, maybe for you it does too. But don't expect 2 billion Christians to go, "Wow, this is simply spiritual and psychological truth of the human condition and our dogma is more obscuring than helpful. Thanks!" Is magic real are shamanic journeys real? That is the wrong question all together.

Arith Harger, have you heard of the Tibetan art of Throng Jung, the art of consciousness transfer to other bodies? It is part of the shamanic arts in tantric shamanism and written about in the 9 arts of Naropa. The shaman is able to transfer their awareness into the body of another person or an animal.

Next time you shape shift into the Theresa form please stay that way, it is a 1000% improvement and I'm sure that Mr T will agree with me. This video sent my mind racing back to the many studies and lecturse that I sat through relatinfg to the symbolism of the Norse Mythology and others of Ancient religions. Shamanism played a big part in these studies, trances and other menas of communicating with gods and spirit forms.Interestingly one thing I have never seen mentioned in anybody's videos is that Odinn is actauall have gifted Huginn and Muninn with the ability to speak (Ynglinga Saga). Imagine if your though or memory couldn't communicate to you?

I know right? I felt quite gracious and beautiful, must turn into Theresa again :o she's my Fylgja, it seems. And very good point on that part of the Ynglinga Saga, as in Galdr the projection of the voice is also the projection of spirit and that is often refered to önd, the spiritual essence in everything, the sort of equivelent to "mana" and "silla" and somewhat the "aether". Projection of the mind/thought/spirit through the voice.

I've been reading through other comments that you are now in quarantine, well, good luck sir. If you want to read something related to shapeshifting but not accademical, just for trivial purposes, I suggest you the books from the Witch cycle in Discworld, by Terry Pratchett. The human mind over physical body has been documented in numerous ways. For one; cases concerning persons with Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID, or "Split-Personality-Disorder) exhibited profound somatic distortions. Such as; changing of eye-color(genetic level stuff), appearance and disappearance of massive, mastisized tumors, sexual organ modifications, skin tone, texture and pigment alterations, etc. These " modifications" are accomplished with nothing more or less than "conviction". A mind that holds no doubts about it's body's state, makes the body THAT state.

This video has some pretty good info and a ton of good literary references. In general though I keep trying to like this guy but I have had a hard time trusting everything he says. The way he talks so authoritatively and categorizes things so systematically is a first alarm. Then there are these little mistakes he makes regarding really basic stuff that leaves me scratching my head. For example towards the beginning in this video he puts emphasis on the second syllable in ‘Völundarkviða’, but if you’ve looked into Old Norse even a tiny bit you would probably have learned that emphasis is ALWAYS on the first syllable: it’s an easy rule to follow and a primary principal which is particularly important in reading poetry. The fact that he doesn’t know this is confusing to me: he seems to have studied a lot, how could he have missed lesson 1 in pronunciation? Another time when saying ‘hamfarir’ he puts emphasis on the last syllable, which shows he doesn’t understand the words he’s saying enough to know what is a root and what is an ending: it’d be like putting emphasis on -en in english ‘eaten’ (it’s an ending so very unlikely that it would be stressed). When introducing ‘hamrammr’ he splits it up when he says it outloud into ‘hamr-rammr’ which shows he doesn’t understand the grammatical function of the nominative -r ending in ‘hamr’. This one is perhaps a little more nitpicky, but again it struck me as odd--something someone who had studied the language would not do--when he did that. Later he refers to ‘Hrólf saga kráka’ which shows he doesn’t understand the genitive case (it should be ‘Hrólfs saga kráka’ and he particularly pronounces the first word without the -s ending and writes it on the screen without the ending). I just feel that if he hasn’t learned any of the phonetics or grammar of the words he’s talking about, how did he learn so much about their meaning? He says that he does so by looking at how they are used in the literature, but it’s pretty clear he isn’t knowledgeable enough about the language to interpret the literature himself. So I suppose he gathers his technical insights from other people who themselves may or may not know what they are talking about. This video in particular doesn’t have any glaringly false claims and is pretty good in general. But I have seen other videos where there is pure speculation, fantasy, and some real bullsh!t (see his video on Perthro). I’d be wary of learning anything from him that you don’t corroborate yourself.

Hello there! How are you? You seem to be struggling so let me give you some help: I am an historian and an archaeologist and I speak 5 languages, but I never said Old Norse is one of them. For Old Norse language I always recommend Dr. Jackson Crawford, but I no not recommend him for history and archaeology. I have a dozen Old Norse dictionaries which help me in my studies, but dictionaries hardly help me in pronunciation, but in terms of Old languages I'm actually more knowledgeable in Latin which greatly helps me to find out the mistakes in Scandinavian Latin texts and the mistranslations from Old Norse to Latin and then from Latin to modern languages, and that's why I find out mistakes and possible meanings that have been overlooked. As an archaeologist my field of expertise for the past 3 years has been Iron Age and Middle Ages, but for almost 7 years I've had my share of prehistoric archaeology, but mostly my field of expertise was Roman context and the period of transition between the Empire and the Early Middle Ages which helps to understand religious changes from various forms of Polytheism into Christianity, and the Roman-Catholic religious concepts helps me to understand the changes in religion in Scandinavian context. Concerning the runes, well I thought I had made myself clear in several videos, but my rune-series are my own esoteric/mystical interpretation of each rune, which is why I keep those videos on a different folder, apart from "Scandinavian Studies". When I do academic work on the runes it goes to the "Scandinavian Studies" folder and not the "Runes" folder. Occult, mysticism, and certain esoteric frameworks are one of my hobbies - a man has to keep himself busy and retain a sense of wonder and mystery, hehe. And I talk "authoritatively"? Well, I don't know what to say concerning that, because I've never seen myself as a figure of authority in any way, so it's strange that you see that in me. Anyway, as an archaeologist let me tell you something: Archaeology is like the detective department of history, and we find a lot of things that don't add up in written records, so there is a lot of bs out there. As an example, in Scandinavian archaeology, pre-Christian context, we find a lot of things that go completely against what is written in the sources concerning Norse mythology and religious beliefs. Thanks to archaeology, history is always being revised, and through time I have had to change my speech and revise a few things myself and even contradict myself because new info is always coming up and new insights and new interpretations, that's just how things work. Would you rather have me stick to obsolete ideas that no longer work? Or would you rather have me keeping up with new discoveries and new interpretations closer to the truth? Remember that no one knows everything there is to know in this world, we all have our flaws, after all... we are only human. I'm not here as a figure of authority delivering the "absolute truth" because that simply doesn't exist. I'm here to help reach the truth as much as possible and under the various limitations on my work and on my own physical existance as a human being. If you want the "truth" seek a prophet(ess), and he/she will give you their own truth. I'm a scientist, and science is not meant to deliver the truth, but instead it is meant to give the tools with which we may find the truth. You seem to be struggling to like me, but, if you allow me, let me say something else to you and I hope I don't sound too "authoritatively", hehe. You are not obliged to like me, or to like anyone else. If you have a hard time trying to like someone that means that in that person you see something that is keeping you there, maybe curiosity? Certainly something that calls to you and you actually like it but you have a hard time trying to like the person for whichever reasons. Maybe because you simply don't understand the person, but we are all different and all of us have our own behaviour and our own way to express ourselves. You don't need to like me, in fact, there isn't a single person in the history of mankind that was liked by everyone. I'm sure there are people that like you and those who doesn't, as I am quite certain there are people who like me and those who simply can't, and I'm okay with it. I'm not in here trying to seek followers, minions, mindless-sheep. I've always made it clear that I'm here to help, only, and I do very much appreciate people who can think for themselves and I've often and loudly expressed that everyone should question everything, doubt everything, and seek information. I'm not the only source of information, I'm just one source, and people do whatever they like with the information I pass on. I, myself, will always be a student as well and I'm passing on the things i learn instead of keeping knowledge to myself and leave everyone in the dark. My knowledge, insights, interpretations I give them for free and here I am doing it over and over again for the past 3 years and a few months on KZbin. Everyone has the right to have access to information, in my opinion. I'm like a radish: you are not sure if you like the taste, because it starts as something normal, then it's strange, and then it stings, and when you swallow it it's a mixture of emotions, but it's good for your health. Okay, this last point I'm only joking with you, sometimes I do that, I make jokes . . . doesn't mean they are good, but the point here is that you don't have to take seriously everything I say. Thank you. Cheers!

@@ArithHärger "I'm like a radish: you are not sure if you like the taste, because it starts as something normal, then it's strange, and then it stings, and when you swallow it it's a mixture of emotions, but it's good for your health." Haha you may be right. Thank you for your detailed response! You have responded with self-awareness and openness, something rare in this world! Let me first off apologize because it seems maybe that you took part of my comment as a personal attack. I did not mean that at all. My aim was to offer a critique and give a review of sorts of my experience with your content--such as it is and as I've seen it so far (not to critique you as a person in any way!). And it speaks to your character that you responded with humor and without malice and without attacking me. Secondly, thank you for offering your background--I guess we have focused on entirely different aspects of Norse culture (I study language and language change, you archaeology) and so it makes sense that what may be basic to me in what I consider basic knowledge of Norse culture may not be in your discipline and vice versa. If you can take some constructive advice, however, I'd still suggest you take some time to learn more about Norse pronunciation: I think it'd add a lot to your videos. You obviously have spent a lot of effort into research for these videos and in studying other topics, and especially with your background in other languages it would probably only take you a few hours. Putting emphasis always on the first syllable is an excellent start. Modern Icelandic pronunciation may have more resources for you to find, and is a fine standard. Maybe I have no right to offer this advice (you are the successful content creator, not me). But I feel that for most people that have studied old norse, if they heard your pronunciation, would dismiss you as not knowing what you are talking about (which I clearly, seemingly wrongfully, have done). Thank you again for your candid reply, it means a lot. Humbly, Chris

Don’t forget eels, the fish-like animal most dragon and snake like. Which when in groups can look like the serpent knot work we see in ancient art. Not common now but a major food source in the past I find with your video on Tyr the thought of shamanic or shapeshifter gods being the adviser. As they can seer or travel to collect wisdom. Possibly why they are seen as the ones in power since their advice becomes the action taken. It is fascinating how in stories where Odin is not there the other shapeshifter Loki gets called on to fix problems or advise from wall building to missing hammers. Or how seering on horse behaviour was attested. I also wonder with imagery of Loki in chains and having venom dropped on him is to prevent this type of shapeshifting you mentioned in the video

Change of appearance as opposed to a change of essence. One example being Loki taking the form of a horse to mate and bear Colts. Way beyond mere trickery. But a bear shirt donning a bear pelt to give a impression of a bears' traits for a ceremony is very different from actually living as a bear.

I would rather get into the mind of an animal rather than putting on it’s pelt. I also see more value to a pelt that is able to put themself onto me rather than me putting them on. The fur that is still attached can jump on at it’s own will, the pelt can only move post Mortem by another’s.

What are some thoughts on the concept of the physical body changing due to the mental alterations that a person endures? I've heard people express concepts that "magic" is essentially condensed...enlightenment, if you will, for lack of a better word right now. It would make sense that the body would change as the mind undergoes a transformation that is extreme. After all, we acknowledge that the experience of our existence with all facets of the world is a merging of the mind, body, and spirit--the further broken down parts of the self. Would love to hear opinions. Thank you for making such amazing content as always!

You should take a look into visuddhimagga. It is in relation to Buddhism, but talks about the processes for realizing sidi’s. And Tibet has many tales of people performing them. One sidi with 3 combined elements is; Being able to float in crosslegged position, make it rain from under the body and fire shoot from the top of the head. Shapeshifting and travel through rocks and such, leaving footprints etc. Happened frequently according to the some older sources. The thing that prevents most from gaining that, is because it is based on the notion of showing positivity, in such a deep and profound way. Also things like humming machines, radio signals and basically, everything that represents a “modern” world greatly hinder the process. Also many of the systems and functions of the body, are informed to a person as working a certain way, when if taken systemically instead of segmented, the functions are different. The point i am trying to make is, shapeshifting and other things have more basis in truth. But, with that said, the effort required to get there, is not for the faint of heart or those with just a passing interest of spirituality.
@funderbee

I say this with not personally having seen a sidi performed. But gained insight and wisdom, after reading: Visuddhimagga: The Path of Purification. Also, my personal opinion about time, tho things did happen, and we have evidence which you have used to teach me more in the last week, than any one person has in the same amount of time, the past and future, literally do not exist. Even by the time you realize you thinking, you are realizing something which is mo longer right now. Most of the deepest teachings and practices, pivot on using correct vocabulary with.

In my recent research of the Sami, I have heard over and over again that the contemporary Sami consider "Lappland" and "Lapp" racial slurs. I mention this, as I have heard you use the word "Lappland" in several videos, and I wonder if you have a reason for using it, archaeologically or historically. I understand certain words like "cult" raise eyebrows with some. Not going for political correctness here. I just cringe a little every time you say "Lappland" and I truly want to know if I'm just missing something historical, or am I bringing new information to the table?
@ArithHärger
@ArithHärger 4 жыл бұрын
Hello there! I had no idea that "lapland" was considered a racial slur by modern Sami people. I have had a lot of Sami around here, many subscribed to this channel, and no one ever said a word. When I say "lapland" it's because of a lack of a better term to describe a territory in the Viking Age that wasn't Norse but wasn't totally Sami either as there were also the Finns and others in this "Lapland" territory, to make a clear distinction between cultures in the past. Can you please explain to me why "Lapland" is a racial slur to them nowadays? I would very much like to understand it, if you please. In my own language there is no other word for that territory aside from Lapland, should it be called Sápmi? Maybe that is it,and when I speak of it in the past maybe I should say "Sápmi cultural-world" or something. Thank you for the heads-up.
@redcrowdawn

It's my understanding that "Lapp" means "scum", and "Lapland" or "Lappland" means "scum of the earth", or something akin to that. Watching some Sami activists/singers/yoikers on KZbin, as well as various lectures given at universities/schools by Sami people dressed in traditional wear, this is where I have heard, "Please don't call us Lapps or our region Lappland, because those are racial slurs and very offensive to us." I will have to look back through my history to find videos I can link you to so you can see where I learned this. Please have patience, though. I live off-grid and have limited internet access. I am not Sami, although I do plan to go on a "pagan pilgrimage" of sorts, visiting many places you've mentioned and visited in Europe, and then I'd like to conclude my trip with a year's stay in Sápmi. I also plan to learn Northern or Southern Sami. I have read and also have seen videos that Sápmi is the preferred name for the region, now. By the way, I have VERY much appreciated all the times you've mentioned the Sami in your videos, as I have learned a lot about them from you. Please feel free to ask me any further questions. I appreciate your kind, respectful discourse. I don't know what to call this region historically, but perhaps you could ask your Sami subscribers and patrons what their opinions/preferences are.
@offgridishland

Wikipedia, which is not always the most reliable source, said "The terms 'Lapp' and 'Lapland' are regarded as offensive by some Sami people, who prefer the area's name in their own language, "Sápmi".", but Wikipedia doesn't say why. The New World Encyclopedia says, "The Sami were previously known in other languages as Lap(p). This name was originally used in Sweden and Finland, and from there the word was exported to all major European languages (German: Lappen, French: lapons, Spanish: lapones). The Sami have always referred to themselves as Sámid ("the Samis") or Sápmelaš ("of Sami kin"). "One of the main meanings of the term "Lapp" is "a patch of cloth for mending" and suggests that the Sami wear patched clothes out of poverty, making "Lapp" a derogatory and offensive term. This is particularly problematic since the Sami have historically had to deal with stereotyped ideas of being vagabonds and drunks. Sami institutions, notably the parliaments, the radio and television stations, and theaters, all use the term Sami, as do academic references."

Political correctness is America's newest form of intolerance, and it is especially pernicious because it comes disguised as tolerance. It presents itself as fairness, yet attempts to restrict and control people's language with strict codes and rigid rules. I'm not sure that's the way to fight discrimination. I'm not sure silencing people or forcing them to alter their speech is the best method for solving problems that go much deeper than speech.

Yes, master (male) while Freyja is "mistress", but of course the term "mistress" here is old-fashioned feminine version of “master”, but I'm well aware that we should be cautious about using the word “mistress” nowadays, as in contemporary English it has a completely different connotation, as in the unmarried lover of a married man, sadly. But Odin is indeed the only male god linked to Seidr and practitioner of Seidr, and we have many accounts related to that and his shapeshifting forms, while Freyja, sadly, is seldom mentioned when it comes to shapeshifting related to seidr. This is not something that Old Norse and "AmerIndian ancients" have in common. Maybe they did in Norse history but shapeshifting is something that is still happening today. This video is strictly about shapeshifting in a ceremonial and ritualistic sense. Native/Indigenous peoples in North America have experiences with shapeshifters outside the more esoteric sense such as hunting deer that suddenly shapeshift and situations like that. There is an unbroken line of continual experiences because we are not people of the past, we exist today. The stories and traditions are handed down over generations. There aren't "ancient" teachings and in a separate box "modern" traditions.

Your first comment was wrong and for some reason you've decided to double down and be patronizing. So that makes me wonder why you brought up the false comparison between Norse and "Ancient" Native people's beliefs regarding shapeshifting? Don't spread misinformation for clout.
