This is the popular and beautiful Oak Creek Canyon to Sedona from Flagstaff. The drive is considered the most beautiful drive in Arizona. The stretch of road through Oak Creek Canyon is actually 12 miles long. Along the way we stop and swim in Oak Creek. We did not actually go down into Slide Rock as the parking lot was full and it was overcrowded.

From the Sonoran Desert in the south to the high country in the north all the way up towards the Four Corners east and the Grand Canyon in the west. Known as the Grand Canyon state, Arizona is diverse in many ways. The state tree is the Palo Verde, the state cactus is the Saguaro, the state bird is the Cactus wren. My cousin drove my mom and me up to Sedona from Phoenix, one afternoon in October of 1996. After we spent a little time at Tlaquepaque, she drove us north, along Oak Creek Canyon, almost to Flagstaff, then turned us around and returned to Sedona a little before sundown. The deciduous trees were still bearing some autumn leaves, which contrasted with the pines, the deep blue sky, and the beautiful, astounding red rocks. Slide Rock State Park was closed for the season, but campgrounds in the trees still had many camping there. Arriving back in Sedona, we stopped at Safeway, then McDonald's, and when we drove out of town toward I-17, it was just after dark.

Please be responsible when visiting! I suggest bringing a trash bag or 2 and haul out all your garbage. For bonus points pick up garbage that too many others leave behind! The people who leave their trash and use the creek as their bathrooms really ruin it for everyone. This is sacred and appreciated land by many, please act responsibly.

@Jim Dandy I believe it. It’s a pretty hot topic here among the locals. It’s pretty sad more care isn’t taken to “leave no trace”, being thoughtful to keeping such a beautiful place clean for others to also enjoy. Although I hear this is a huge issue almost everywhere now as it seems more people are getting away to the great outdoors.

First time I visited Oak Creek Canyon and Slide Rock was 1962. The place was deserted and Slide Rock had about 50 trout that were anywhere from 10 to 15 in Long. Sedona consisted of a gas station a small store in a couple of houses. It really was a paradise back then unspoiled and fairly unknown!
@kevin3473

That was the point, to keep it unknown from the general population. unfortunately it didn't stay that way for long.. The first time I went thru Sedona was back in 1975 and it has changed since then.

I have done that ride about 40 times. Very beautiful, however the Devils Highway gets my vote for the most scenic in Arizona. Certainly, they are both in the same league. I see there was not much traffic. Must be because of the virus scare. Normally the traffic is jammed, especially on the weekends. When you go back there, go a few miles South of Sedona and go East on Airport Road. It's at a light. Go to the top. Park your car (cost 3 dollars), then walk over to the edge and get the great view. Not sure if you featured that in your other Sedona videos. I highly recommend.

Notice how there are no street lights anywhere where the stars are what illuminates the skys at night! Also, hardly no signals are present where roundabouts are prevalent everywhere! The vehicles in the circle have priority and the traffic must yield to them as they merge into the circle. Drive slow and enjoy the scenery! This is your chance to open yourself and let nature and the spiritual energy into your life!

In 1980 I as a lineman for Mtn. Bell, my crew built an aerial line from Flag to Sedona. In Sept. it was still hot difficult wok all done off hooks as there was no room for bucket trucks. After a long day we would skinny dip in several hidden pools only we knew about. One note, every bush and tree had thorns.

Has anyone seen the Watchman of the Canyon along Oak Creek? It was there in the 1930's when the highway was still named Highway 79 and was featured on postcards. The highway was renamed to 89A, but I'm not sure if the watchman was destroyed to make the highway.

I remember one time leaving Flagstaff to drive back to Cottonwood, and there was a severe traffic accident (car pile-up) on I-17 southbound. This happened after driving all the way down to Munds Park, and then we had to turn around and go back to Flag. We were then diverted onto SR89A. The traffic was so bad it took five hours of stop and crawl from Flag to Sedona. Once we got into Sedona it wasn't bad driving back to Cottonwood. I absolutely love Oak Creek Canyon, but I don't like being stuck in traffic because it reminded me of Los Angeles lol.
