Scott I’ve been “backtracking” through your older videos for several days now. Patagonia is literally an hour south of our home but I never realized there was so much there… This has been a wonderfully educational video, which I’ll probably watch a second time as I know I missed bits and pieces of it… Thank you for sharing this content.

In 1976 my sister and I were driving from our hometown of Patagonia to Tucson. I was 16, she was seven. We has just passed Sonoita when she spotted a black "dog" crossing the road about 100 yards ahead. I said, "no, that's a cat." Then I realized how big it was and slowed way down. It sat by the side of the road as we crawled by. Black jaguar!!! No one believed us until the weekly paper later reported a rancher spotting a black "panther" nearby. It was the most amazing wildlife experience of my life.

Wow! That's just incredible. An actual black panther and you saw it right near where I was photographing. Just amazing and thank you so much for sharing your story, Tammy!

I starting giggling when you were talking about the Arizona jaguar. Glad you didn't get surprised in the dark! I enjoyed your video. We used to hang out at Sonoita Creek and at the Paton's home all the time. Marion was "Grandma Marion" to my sister's children and hundreds more local kids. She was an amazing woman. Thanks for the wonderful memories.

I'm amazed with that Iphone you have there. The interview of that very interesting lady during that afternoon light really came out well, good job. Well done on both interviews! Just got done doing Camino del Diablo, it was perfect timing. If you haven't already, I think you'll love it. Keep up the good work.

This video is the last video I will shoot with an Iphone X. I have now upgraded to an Iphone 11 Pro Max with 512 Gigs of storage. I hope to film in 4K from my phone and increase the video clarity that much more. Especially in low light situations and fast-moving situations where there is an unnecessary blur. My next episode will be filmed next week.

@@4XPEDITION It was a perfect trip and has everything to offer someone who loves the desert (including amazing sunrise and sunsets). The one thing I noticed right away was how quiet; no crickets, cicada, or even birds in the morning in some places. If your Subaru can handle sand it'll have no problems, it's not very deep and only in places. The Border Patrol maintains it very well and, if you're fortunate like we were, they're the only other people you'll see. I recommend going during the week, timed with good weather and at least two nights. Starting from Ajo gives you the perspective of the travelers and perfectly climaxes with the Tinajas Altas mountains (high tanks). We exited from the East side of the range on the third night straight north after staying at the base of the tanks a night. Choose your camps with the morning sun in mind. The west side of terrain features are preferable but when exposed find a wash (don't get stuck, hard sand only) with vegetation (speaking of which, it's green now). Best is to plan your camp by hills, you'll want shade even if it's nice. I brought extra gas but didn't need it (i have a range of 300 miles). The lava field is the only obstacle, and it's not that bad or long. Stop and talk to the Border Patrol when they pass, tell them what you're doing, be friendly and supportive (they deserve it), and they'll look out for you. They might even drive to your camp at night, it's normal. Never once did i feel a bad vibe or sensed danger, but still had a pistol and shotgun. :) It's not recommended alone, but with reliable transportation I'd do it alone. But i'd be more cautious when camped and at night. I think it's perfect for you, right up your alley. If you have any questions ask away. In a few days i'll probably have uploaded footage of the trip. It's not a production but should give a good sense of the road and terrain.

I live about 40 miles south east of the area you were in, and noted with some humor that you marvel at the plants and trees in the area. I wonder, however, if you know that those Mesquite, Yucca and Cottonwood trees as well as the bufflegrass and tumbleweeds are NOT native to Arizona. They did not appear until after the 1880's when a great earthquake split the San Pedro river bed open and drove it mostly underground (before that the river had trains and paddle boats traveling all the way to Oracle over 100 miles to the north). The quake also caused the boulders on the surrounding mountains to tumble down their sides and set off sparks as they struck one another. Those sparks then set fire to the grass which covered the entire valley. The fire killed almost all the cattle (Hereford cattle, for which the area I live in was named). When the ranchers began to repopulate their ranches they went to Texas and brought back Longhorn Cattle from there. The cattle not only brought meat to the ranch land, they also brought the seeds for those trees and plants that you see. Over the past 140 years this area of Arizona has experienced a type of mini terraforming, radically changing the ecology of the area. Even Sonoita, which as recently as 20 years ago was all grassland, is now getting covered by more and more of these Texas invaders.
