I never thought about it like that, I think Arj has nailed it "the onus is on the listener"..rather than the speaker to be clear about what they're saying.

LJY08 To be fair "squidgery-didge" does sounds like it could be related to the word "squiz" (which means have a look), but to a degree I think you are right. I think being able to decipher context (what word/meaning should be there) matters more than the actual words used.

Because they're ears aren't familiar enough with the accents to differentiate. Just like many Aussies might not be able to tell the difference between some American accents and Canadian accents (me inlcuding). What I don't get is when it bothers people.
