I would actually say that samus in ultimate is very interesting when fighting offline due to the myriad of mixups that charge shot enables. It allows her to approach from the air with a threatening, high damage combo starter or finisher, gives her incredibly tricky movement, and some of the best, quickest, and most powerful mixups off projectiles in the game. After her missiles were gutted in smash 4, charge shot took up the reins in ultimate to fix that missing utility by pooling it all in one move, a powerful anchor for her entire moveset to work off of, and allows her to still perform her role as the midrange zoner/brawling terror she’s always been.

great video! Amazed at how seemlessly you switch between games without it being confusing too. Something I think is worth mentioning with charge cancels is that they're extremly useful for movement. being able to reverse direction with low lag ( with turnaround b in melee), or even momentum (with b reverse and wavebounce in later games) midair is something really key to how those moves ended up being used, though I'm not sure how intentional it was outside of pm/+.

this is a really fantastic production, junebug. i would like to use my comment to add a bit of depth to link's bombs in particular as having clear counter-counterplay options. they are timed detonations, meaning the window of time for the projectile to be used by link or used by link's opponent can be understood way more easily. it's not too much different in that they can catch it or send it back, but the element of choosing when to throw the bomb, and that forcing them into certain options, is unique to bombs on a timer!

One of the things I actually really like about Ultimate is that they decided to take Charge Shot, which as Junebug mentioned, is pretty limited in terms of applicability, and changed it into something pretty nuanced and varied in its applications. I have a whole video about it on my channel, but the newest version of charge shot changes utility based on how long you keep it charged (ei: mid charge opens up for a ton of combos in the neutral, low charge is more of a quick neutral option since missiles suck in ultimate, and full charge can be used to confirm kills, and is a killer off stage). It's now far more that just a simple blue ball, which is cool to see given it's humble beginnings in the earlier titles. Great video btw Junebug--keep these coming!
@arJunebugSmash3 жыл бұрын
Such a wonderful comment! Thanks, I def had so many comments about how I didn't understand charge shot in Ultimate (which to be fair I didn't have as robust an understanding I thought), and if I had to redo the Ultimate Samus bits, I may have put a larger emphasis on them in the Charge Cancel section. Glad you noticed the initial limitations of charge shot I presented and how depth can be added to a projectile by giving it more use cases. :) I'll have to check out your channel!

I think Mega Man’s metal blade is a great projectile because it’s also a multi-hit item. Metal blades play a key roll in mega man’s game plan for shield pressure, edge guarding, and kill confirms. No matter how it’s used, it’s always a multi hit, so the opponent can’t just shield it once and punish. They have to play around it just like any projectile mega man has. It can be thrown in multiple directions, which allows metal blades to cover different options. Plus in smash 4 it gave mega man access to glide tossing. Most importantly, metal blades aided in edge guarding and kill confirms/combos. Since mega man is a zoner, it’s important for him to have ways to kill up close, so metal blades give him plenty of ways to do so. Like footstool combos, linking into up tilt and up/down smash, and interrupting recoveries. However, it is an item, so the opponent can use it against mega man. But most people don’t know how to use it.

A few things you couldve mentioned is sticking projectiles such as pikmin and Sephiroth's side B. There's also explosive projectiles that go forward a distance then burst like some of heroes stuff and sephiroth neutral b. One thing you forgot to mention with items that makes the gameplay and gameplan more interesting if the fact when a character is holding an item they can't use aerials. This turns in techniques like z dropping bananas then catching the item with an aerial instantly after dropping it for pressure. Im not sure if its like this in melee but in ult peach is unique in that she can aerial while holding turnips which creates a new layer of pressure.
