I disagree that you had time to build up your character in 2nd. You go there immediately rush for the clues or fighting an annoying monster that stops your movement. You get drawn into gates, getting lost in time and space. And there are already too many gates on the field.

How many players did you typically play with? For us, 5 or so average players we always had 1-2 people focus on monster killing, 1-2 people focus on closing gates, and that allowed other people to interact with the game and build up characters then give the things they found to other people. New players would try to just do what was fun for their character which would make us lose quickly until we got everyone following the same plan.

@@GreyWizardInsights 3-5, usually 4, but again, it is a high variance game, but again we played with many expansions, which makes the game considerably harder. As for 3rd, I did not finish it yet, I just bought it and due to this virus cannot play with anyone :( but I noticed significant improvement especially in monster mechanics (which was horrible in 2nd) and also encounters are more reliable what it says on the location

Nice review, I've been stuck between the 2nd and 3rd edition of this and Eldritch. By the way, what is the song at the end?
@GreyWizardInsights6 жыл бұрын
Machine Assembly by "The Whole Other" a song they graciously gave to use for free! You can find it here: kzbin.infomusic?o=U or go to their channel kzbin.info/door/xfzyJ-HvEZbGmubAmfcsfQvideos I don't know how to link directly to the song unfortunately. :(

Having played all three, I would agree about 3rd in that it takes the story elements of the card game, and is faster and more 'gamey'. I love 2nd edition. The slower pace. The growing sense of overwhelm and doom. But also the sense that you can make success happen. And the cards are so immersive. 3rd has some of this, but is faster, more engaging in some ways (more to do game wise). But I felt like a 'tank' early on. Eldritch is even more gamey. More abstract. For me, less immersive. I'm going to be playing more of 3rd, but still going back to 2nd for my hardcore 'proper' Arkham horror fix. Don't know if that helps at all

Both editions have good and bad elements, and for 3rd edition, you have some control if you want to agree on rules. Maybe give player 2-3 turns before drawing from the cup, my group planning the 1st time felt the game scaled out of control to quickly. So instead of two methos cup tokens per turn per player, we took the total doom on the board minus the amount of players, and pulled that many tokens for the turn, which gives incentive to remove doom

Our games definitely feel so stressful as to be almost unfun, slowing things down even a little bit like your idea does would probably help

Thanks for this review. It really helped me on my decision whether or not I should buy it :)

Robert de Best did you decide to buy?
@TheMasterswordish6 жыл бұрын
@@michaelgoshorn476 No, I did not. I'm new to the series, I just heard great things about it. But it doesn't seem that this is the place to start this adventure. Also, the fact that you seem to start with a fully developed character and not that you learn to love your own creation put me off it

Good job!! I only played one scenario (solo), and I loved it. I have everything for the 2nd edition and enjoy it as well but I have a feeling this new edition will replace it mostly because of the time to setup and play. The story driven theme is also a big draw for me and I’m very excited to see an what an expansion will do to enhance the experience overall.

Did you win? ;)
@carluno86046 жыл бұрын
Nope, lol. It was a pretty even race between doom and clues but in the end a Reckoning came out of the bag and it triggered a Dark Pact (rolled a 1) which added doom to the scenario sheet which woke up a very angry Azathoth haha. It was still great fun and I’ll try and play another game asap.

I look for every opportunity to play this game, can't wait to get some wins under my belt. By the end of 2nd edition, we could reliably win every time, I don't know if I'd feel comfortable playing the same scenario in 3rd edition enough times to get to that point, really looking forward to seeing what they can do in terms of "scenario packs"

I have been playing the tutorial scenario twice, have been mostly positive and see the potential for the expansions.But after seeing your rewiev, even though it's positive, I feel less positive of the game.You kind of verbalised my dislikes with it, too fast paced, not getting to know youre characters.Too hard, agree with Tom Vassel from The Dice Tower that they make coops harder and harder and it's a big risk that they only cater to the hard core playerbase. Really should have different difficulty levels, so you can play the game at a slower pace if you like too. So if I'm gonna play this game more I have to come up with some house rules to make it more fun!

Its definitely a shame that the stories are so much better with this version of the game, but its going to be more of a struggle to convince people to help me explore them. I don't play many games single player, even if thats an option, but this one I might have to just to push through and experience it all. Thanks!
