For some reason, a line of his that I really remember well is about 2/3rds into the movie, when he rather threateningly tells Thomas, "You've been a poor excuse for a soldier so far; DON'T disappoint me again." I think it's because that's probably the most menacing moment he has in the movie.

Funny. For a character they say *departed* from the standard of cool and intimidating Disney villains, I can buy that he charged up his men and got them working... to carry out a plan that was doomed from the outset. The fictional Ratcliffe wanted to lay claim and control a massive store of gold... on the eastern colonial seaboard. Which is never going to happen, and while he's never directly confronted over it, other characters in the movie figure that out. So while "The Indians say (honestly) there's no gold" works its way back, it's overlapping with dissent among the movie's Englishmen who see themselves as having come here for nothing... but Ratcliffe becomes paranoid and attributes everything that's going wrong to the natives. What was I talking about?
