Did mom or dad just gave a feeding? It's rare for 4 or 5 chicks to thrive, especially if prey is not abundant, it's almost impossible for all to thrive, and many predator birds raid other predators nests as well, as it's impossible to both feed and guard the nest at the same time. Nesting, raising chicks is a time of very high mortality rates, high nest failures. More aggressive birds will take ALL the chicks of other birds to feed their own.

It’s quite common for birds of prey to bully, kill and eat their smaller siblings. Often they will only eat one another if there’s a shortage of food which evidently there isn’t, so here I think it’s probably just trying to eliminate possible competition

The one of focus is clearly the most dominant and extremely aggressive. Now I don't know much about birds, but I can recognize when an animal has made it clear that THEY are the boss amongst their siblings. When the food was dropped off, the one immediately turned and the others fled, which signals this isn't the first time something like this has happened. I presume the killing of the sibling from what I can gather from the comments, was an attack out of a bloodlust similar to the "excitement of the hunt". The other chicks turn away and avoid them because they'll be able to eat once the dominant one has had its fill. Think of that one person with many dogs and they have that one dog they have to keep separate when feeding because it'll become so aggressive towards the others.

They usually instinctively attack at the head and eat their way down the body. The little baby died of shock from skin and blood loss with catastrophic loss of body heat due to the skin loss. The littlest ones are at greatest risk. #1 chick off the hook in blood frenzy/lust, with a nice full crop when done. Goshawks are among the most aggressive of the bird of prey raptors.

Thanks for not hiding the truth. Humans are often quite savage to other humans. Not all but some. I think when one is allowed to be a bully, they can reach d point of no return because they get satisfaction, pleasure, power, in going extreme because they can. Human Bullying and War is just as disgusting. So is cold abuse and molestation. The remaining siblings did their best to turn away and deny what was happening. Did they do so because they were afraid of being attacked next? Or do their instincts tell them their sibling is psychotic and to defensively act as if nothing was happening? Being blood relative isn't a guarantee of love, trust, in nature or humanity, sadly. Aggression and killing is passed to other generations in nature and humanity. A never-ending reality.
@thomasmleahy6218

They act on instinct, aggressive chick is now feeding on smaller chick. I've never seen such determination and relentless behavior before. As for the others, there is no thought involved, they are not mulling this over in their head, they're not capable of these higher thought processes.

@@thomasmleahy6218 Exactly, it’s strange when people talk about other species like they have human thought patterns and emotions. These goshawk nestlings aren’t capable of feeling sadness for the youngest chick. They have no concept of family or sibling loyalty. The very idea is laughable yet I see people doing this time and time again, especially in nest cam situations where watching a drama like this leads to all sorts of anthropomorphisms.

This is the unvarnished, quite brutal reality of nature, folks. In the natural world where life resources like food, water, and shelter are greatly limited and so viciously competed for, the runts of a litter or brood simply aren't long for life. They are either killed by predators, parents, and even (as demonstrated here) their own siblings, or left to die a painful, long death from starvation. The law of natural selection doesn't leave any room for compassion, pity, and empathy in a game that rewards only positve adaptions and fitness in organisms. As uncomfortable as it may be for us high-minded Homo Sapiens to swallow, with our civilized ethics, values, and tastes, the hard game of life on Earth has been this way since the first eurakyotes arose 2.2. billion years ago and will likley remain so until the last living species catches its last breath.

This is so weird and so Eugene O'Neill-esque. I've never seen a chick kill (and semi-cannibalize) a sibling chick. And for what? WHY? Why did the victim barely fight back? Why did the two other chicks do nothing? WTH?

People think this is revenge or competition reduction obviously they know nothing about raptors and over exaggerate things that are too simple for their plebeian minds to understand. The chick here isn’t a bully. It’s simply hungry and knows mum brought food. However the plumage of whatever mom was bringing is too similar to their own and hence this chick is convinced that whatever is grey is also food. You can see the prey item the parent brought. But the bigger chick doesn’t notice it instead it noticed the moving small chick. This is clearly the second time this chick exhibited such behavior hence why the other two large ones avoided it.

I don't know why people keep trying to push their sense of morality on nature. They don't see this is cruel. It's nothing more than survival of the fittest. Mom left, they were still hungry. That one figured out "kill the smallest - it's the easiest to kill - kill it - I get more food". They don't see each other as siblings. They see each other as competition. For a lot of species, that's how it is. Even the parents expect it to happen - which means they focus less on the weaker ones, and the species as a whole remains stronger instead of smaller, weaker birds getting a chance to dilute the gene pool later. No, it's not "nice" but nature is NEVER "nice".

Is it just me, or did anyone else feel annoyed that he didn't even attempt to fight back. Cowardice is a useless emotion. Fear has its uses but not in this situation. Fight or flight, and I'm not sure why the fight did not kick in? Hiding in a ball and not fighting back only seals your fate.

The hell you're talking about. The little guy was the ultimate trooper. There is a longer video where you can clearly see the chick was literally trying everything in its power to stay alive. First hiding, then trying to fight back, then burrowing its head to protect it from being relentlessly pecked when it realized it cannot match the big bird's strength, then desperately trying to run away but being unable to do so, even at one point hiding under its other sibling making the big bird confused for a while before (s)he (re-)discovers it. It simply wasn't enough. Even at one moment where it's whole head is de-skinned and an unrecognizable lump of flesh, the poor chick still made a feeble attempt to flee in a frenetic attempt to escape from the relentless pain and misery it would soon be put out of. The whole thing goes on for like 40-50 minutes. These are just the highlight portions of the video where the big bird makes most progress at hacking away at the already tired and fatigued sibling, so it only seems like it isn't fighting or putting up much of a resistance.

All of them as big as the aggressor, and outnumbering them. Easily can overpower You cant say they dont know whats going on. They understand perfectly. They're actively ignoring it. But they'll never come for you. Oh no, they wouldn't do that. Dont be these Goshawks. Because when they come for one of us, they'll come for *_all_* of us.

I dont understand why the aggressor doesnt eat the food brought, why attack sibling? I didnt realize they killed their siblings like this. Very sad but I guess it keeps nature in balance and the strongest survive.
@SerbAtheist
@SerbAtheist 11 ай бұрын
It's instinctive behavior that evolved from the evolutionary pressures facing the bird. A larger number of eggs than needed is laid for insurance, but if all of them successfully hatch, siblicide is a necessary measure to reduce food competition and increase the odds of survival of the offspring, thus encouraging aggressive behaviors towards younger and weaker siblings to evolve. Note the three birds anxiously awaiting the mother in front of the murdered sibling so the mother can feed them its corpse. Wanna know what's arguably even more messed up? There are bird species like storks where similar pressured are faced requiring a similar strategy, but the youngings aren't really equipped to kill their smaller siblings, so it is the mother's job to identify the runts and throw them out of the nest. Imagine having your exit ticket punched by your own mother.
