I've seen those side posts on other O nests. Does help keep the sticks in. Not sure they'd be a deterrent to the geese.

I know after the osplets at Boulder died last year they made plans to totally rip out the nest and let the osprey replace it with fresh sticks and bedding. They thought the respiratory issue that killed the osplets was the result of fungus and other nasty stuff that had built up in the nesting material over the years. Probably wouldn't be a bad idea if every few years these nests were cleaned off after the adults left on migration and started fresh the next year.
