Arles is possibly my favourite town/city in all France below the 45th parallel, aside from Perpignan, which isn’t an obvious choice but we can’t always choose first loves (I was 13. My parents dragged me there. I fell. What can I say?) Arles has such a lovely, villagey feel, for a town of 50,000. It has the ochre-coloured buildings with their faded, peeling shutters that epitomises the ‘shabby-chic’ look I adore about France. It’s nearly always sunny and the culture/history of the place is rich enough to occupy a thousand trips there. All in all, an almost perfect town, notwithstanding barbaric bull-fighting connections and ongoing sociopolitical issues related to race.

The Church of Saint TRophime was the object of a little-known and surprising historical event, the coronation as King of Arles on July 30, 1178 of the Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire Frederick Barbarossa. Indeed, at the time a territory ranging from Provence to the Franche county (former county of Burgundy not to be confused with the duchy of Burgundy current region of Burgundy) located east of the river the Rhone had seceded from the Frankish kingdom at the end of the 9th century and was then attached to the Holy Roman Empire in 1032, so that the Germanic emperors also proclaimed themselves kings of Arles. But Frederick Barbarossa wanting to reaffirm his rights over this kingdom was the first and only Roman emperor of the Holy Roman Empire to actually be crowned King of Arles in Arles itself. This monarch had to die during the 3rd crusade by drowning while crossing the ford of a river. The kingdom of Arles will then be recovered by the Count of Provence Charles d'Anjou brother of the King of France Louis IX future Saint Louis, after having defeated the heirs of the"Emperor of the holy Roman Empire Frederick II during the wars to seize the kingdom of Naples and Sicily. The Kingdom of Arles was subsequently recovered by the French Kingdom as part of the French annexation of the county of Provence in 1482. The monarchy nevertheless recognized the specificity of certain customs of the country of Arles as the former kingdom of Arles, until the French revolution which suppressed them in the name of the principle of equality before the law.. It should be noted that the real room that Van Gogh had occupied during his stay in Arles, no longer exists because the house in which Van Gogh lived was destroyed during the allied bombing on Arles in 1944. The Arlesian Jeanne Calment, born in 1875 and died at 122 years old in 1997, who was the dean of humanity, had known Van Gogh who came to buy paint from her at his father’s druggist store.
