He said even though he didn't have a relationship with his dad like in a lot of black families, he was trying to do better, "rewrite the script." That shows he recognizes the problem, doesn't seem overly jaded by it still, and wants better for his future. It gave healed and he has a plan for his future, meaning being in his kids' life. Most women would respect that.
