Thank you. Keep them coming. TBI nine years ago. The spasticity is very frustrating, always being very independent prior to injury. Keep pushing everyone. I know it is hard. Blessings,

I really appreciate your videos. Your delivery, organization, and the clear and concise information. One suggestion would be is to have current stroke recovery patients at various levels of recovery doing these exercises. I’d like to see modifications they employ. For example, #10 stretch I cannot move my fingers using the position you demonstrate, I have to pull open my fingers and ignore my thumb. Is there a better way? But, again, I appreciate all that you do to help us.
@PostStrokeOrg
@PostStrokeOrg 2 жыл бұрын
@jwebb753, Thank you for your kind words and feedback. I would love that as well, but I'm still taking precautions due to the pandemic. It is something that I would like to try in the future though! And as far as a modification, what you're doing is okay. This particular stretch may be a two-parter for you. So first stretch your fingers the way you have been, and then gently stretch your thumb, then repeat. I hope that helps! 😊

Hi Dr. Newland, I'm a recent graduate from OT school and passed the boards exam last month and I cannot wait to begin my journey as an entry level OT. I just wanted to say thank you for sharing your skills and knowledge! I have been watching your videos and they are so good! They are very straightforward and easy to follow. I love learning from you, especially with your expertise and specialization in stroke rehab. I look forward to working with the adult and geriatric population and these videos have been very informative and insightful. I wanted to ask, would it be okay to combine movements while performing these preparatory PROM exercises (ex: elbow extension and forearm supination/pronation) or advise to do one movement at a time?
@PostStrokeOrg
@PostStrokeOrg 3 жыл бұрын
@nickyblando Thanks so much for your kind words! And a HUGE congrats for graduating and passing your boards!! I know you must be so relieved. As our OT mantra dictates, "It depends." haha Combining movements would typically be okay but it's always important to look at each of our clients individually to make sure we're best meeting their needs, their strengths, and their issues :)

Dear Elyse I had a stroke very recently and over the past 2 months i have been doing your recommended stretches. Tipically I do them to three times per day. in the morning , before lunch and in the evening. Is this ok? Or is it potentially too much? I hope they will help to reduce or prevent spasticity.

very well done video, like you did a voiceover and not just talked. superior quality and your voice is soothing. subbed and jotted down notes. for extension issues do you think these will be just as beneficial if my partner helps me stretch them where I have trouble alone doing them? like the turning wrist over one and swinging forearm out to side? adding these into my daily routine. hoping to recover my hand/finger usage from two strokes in 2021. six months of pushing myself hard in PT barely did a thing for it. luckily legs/shoulder fared much better

@headfirstrecords, Thanks so much for the kind words! ❤️ I absolutely think having your partner help with stretches will be beneficial, too! I actually made a video that walks through a caregiver guide to providing stretches: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nWiym6uklqx5qpY I'm so sorry to hear about your two strokes but hope you are doing well!

yep those are the two I struggle with. got a flat hand splint today and could barely get hand/fingers stop stop cupping enough to put straps on. had to remove straps position hand best as possible then try to lock each finger down we kind of got it to work and it is resting more flat than without it but not happy with it yet, gonna keep grinding away daily a few times a day but as of this moment pretty mad at my dumb hand

The rehabilitation method I'm writing about is based on the fact that in rehabilitation it is necessary to stretch the injured side, the stretching that I understand helps in addition to the Sirtons is to make a circular movement many times for a long time, reaching the head and the leg. The circular movement of the head and at the same time of the hand, directly affects the hand and the ankle. I am not a doctor, I have no education in the field, absolutely nothing. This is my personal experience .Thank you .

Hi, I have Stoke 2 months now and I do all your exercises everyday. Ones doing the exercises everyday make me go into recovery faster? My family think I'm rushing it because I do the exercises everyday.

Hi Elyse, my husband had a stroke early August and has lost right side arm & leg. He has a sub luxation on right shoulder and there’s no movement at all in the arm or hand . We’ve been told already that it’s most unlikely he will regain any movement in this arm or hand ! I thought it was too early to call but would welcome your views

I had a stroke in 2017, i lost mobility on my right side. I was told the same thing in just 1 mo after at a rehab centre, and they told me to adjust to the new me. I was mad. I said, i just got here, you hadnt done anything and told me to accept this? 4 yrs, i regained 90% of my leg back, i still can’t run yet. Im fighting spasticity in my fingers. I want to play piano again. Dont give up! My pinky had a tiny flinch in 6 mo after my stroke.

I has 0 movements in arm and hand. My shoulder had tiny movement in 1 mo. I kept working on it. My pinky flinch just 1mm in 6 mo.

It's been almost 3n half years my left hand side got paralysed does these exercises work still
@PostStrokeOrg
@PostStrokeOrg 2 жыл бұрын
@redpanda, It's hard for me to give a specific answer because I don't your history or current movement, but as a general rule, while the pace of stroke recovery does slow down after the first 3-6 months, progress can still happen.

Hi Elyse - many thanks for the arm &hand stretches for spasticity. I use them religiously every day. Could you please provide an alternative to the last exercise (finger stretch) as I find this a bit too tricky, requiring co-operation between my two hands, which they can’t now provide! Many thanks Neil from the UK
@PostStrokeOrg
@PostStrokeOrg 2 жыл бұрын
@neilbeaumont, Absolutely! I made another video specifically focused on hand spasticity. In it I show an alternative way to try to get the fingers out. I'm linking to that specific exercise! kzbin.info/www/bejne/gaPXfpWnjpx9o6M Hope it helps 😊

How many times per day would you suggest these stretches take place each day for optimum results ?
@PostStrokeOrg
@PostStrokeOrg 3 жыл бұрын
@katewood, As a general recommendation, I'd say at least once per day consistently. I'd recommend asking your physician (or therapist if you're still in therapy) for more individualized recommendations!

Hello I a question ⁉️ since December I had a stroke I've been recovering since May....the right side of my body has been getting muscle spasms in my arm and in my leg.... during my sleep when I wake and it's still happening... does it mean that my muscles are waking up?
@PostStrokeOrg
@PostStrokeOrg 3 жыл бұрын
@kennethscarborough That's a good question and it would probably be better directed to your neurologist or a physician who is more familiar with you. From a very general perspective, it could be a few different things. Your brain may be starting to reconnect with muscles causing spasm or pain. Or you could be developing spasticity. If you can, I'd reach out to your doctor as they'll be better able to diagnose what's likely going on and may be able to prescribe a medication that can help with the spasms! Thank you for sharing and for asking! Please take care :)
