Arm movement technique part 1

In this video I go over one of the key elements to doing larger abstract line drawings, arm movement and placement. There are some wrist and hand movements in there too, that I plan on going over in future videos.

I found making lines is the easy part but making it look like art is the challenge. So much fun though going through paper like it grows on trees.

Thank you! I'm glad you can use my artwork as inspiration. The drawings on my intro are pieces that I created 6 years ago. I have been meaning to switch those to newer pieces for a while. I haven't tried drawings on a tablet yet. I don't know if I would be any good at it right away. I enjoy pen and paper so much that It would be difficult. Do you use an IPad for your drawings?

Do you have links and recommendations for pens with dark black solid lines? I mostly work with mixed media (acrylic paint, watercolor, and calligraphy inks). I would love to see a product review video. Thank you in advance for your time and advice.

Yes I do! I have been using these for a while and I really enjoy them Molotow Blackliner water-based black pens: www.jerrysartarama.com/molotow-blackliner-pens I use a lot of different brands of pens, and Molotow has some fun options. They have paint markers, fine point pens, and metallic markers as well. Ive done a review on three brands that I like. I would love to find a pen that does everything that I want, but Im not sure it exists. The closest thing I've found is Toms Studio, Lumos refillable pen. Its just very expensive. That was extremely helpful to see your whole set up and how you use your arm and the bonus is how you fixed what you didn’t like as that is been my learning curve on how you make it look like a “turn” or variation in the wave. Very much appreciate the time you took to do this! If you ever have time, it would be great to know what amount of pressure you put on the pen to paper

I'm glad you like cat cam! I almost always have A cat in the room with me while I'm drawing, so its nice to get them involved with my antics. I would like to do more videos of me just drawing and talking about what I'm doing while I'm in it, so I can get feedback and see what I need to expand on. Another element of smooth, confident, lines - especially as things scale up, is having a real time, intuitive, understanding of exactly where the pen is and where it NEEDS to go. Even in abstract work, thinking of single line points - or complete shapes - in perspective with each other allows math to guide you. Isaac, I think I see you doing the visual math when you’re planning a line path or curve. When you draw, are you focused on the shape of the negative space you’re creating - or do you focus on the end point? Or both? And Isaac, your work is beautiful!🔥 I do a lot of automatic / abstract sketches; and your ideas pushed me through a plateau. I appreciate you!🙏🏽

You are so very right! Being mindful of where you begin and end is very important. I mostly look at the end point, but along the way I look at the positive space I've created with each line. I can better understand how to create balance that way. This is a very good topic, and one that I should flesh out into a whole video. Ive added it to my spreadsheet of content to create. Thank you! Let me start out by telling you how much love cats!❤ That you have not one but TWO Tuxedo cats, with one sitting in your lap WHILE drawing is just so good. Back to this video. I did NOT KNOW that I'm a "wrist artist"!! I've NEVER been able to why draw parallel lines.. EVER!!! No matter how slowly I'd go or what way I positioned my canvas, it never changed! Now I know why!! It was ME not being in the right position! I've never stood up to draw! But when I did, my lines stayed very close to eachother! That's never happened before! I was able to draw paralleled lines that were actually parallel!! (I don't think I'll EVER be able to create what you have but it's a huge improvement!! Oh my GAWD!!! YOU HAVE NO IDEA. How huge is this for me. You said it yourself, that you were "drawing millions of small things." So was I! "Millions" is no exaggeration! I see SOOOO many artists standing at their elevated tables but I never connected the dots until right now!! They were standing to make big drawings and BIG shapes. NOW i know what to save my money for. An adjustable drawing table. I work with engineers who do technical drawings and THEY ARE ALL STANDING and..they can change the height of their table. They are readily awesome and I bet they're not cheap. Oh well! I don't care. Thank you Issac. Thank you a million times. One for each of my "Million small drawings" ❤

LOL! Cats are pretty much my life, since I have four of the beasts! There is almost always at least one cat with me at all times, they follow me wherever I go in the house. Amazing! I'm so glad that I could help with that "ah-ha!" moment. The wrist motion doesn't lend itself very easily to being able to draw parallel lines very easily, and even a heartbeat, or a deep breath can change the hand movement a lot. Getting out of that hunched and tense position is a big game changer as well as helping to keep relaxed and not stressed while creating. A good drafting table can go miles for an artist, and I hope you do get one in the future. You are so welcome, for every one of those million small drawings!

Thanks! I find that it is easier to draw on a slanted surface. Its easier on the neck and shoulders as well. I have a drafting table that can adjust the angle that its at, but I know there are some desktop versions of a drawing pad that has that ability too.
