Funny fact: every horse on the trilogy of LOTR were Puro Sangue Lusitanos, Portuguese horses, the oldest Warhorse breed in the world.
@Crimethoughtfull14 күн бұрын
Seriously?? That's DEEP cut there. Who would even know that?? That's amazing! But also...why? They weren't actually going to war so any old horse could have served. But that's an awesome deep-dive fact! 🙂
@salazarway14 күн бұрын
@Crimethoughtfull The answer is in the animal fearless aspect and behavior and docile character towards people. Tolkien knew very well that is the horse of champions Search for "richest athlete in human history" and you will have an idea! Have a good Sunday!
@salazarway14 күн бұрын
@Crimethoughtfull Peter Jackson knew that the European elites would mainly ride these horses and because of their warlike aspect and docile behavior. Also he is fan of the richest sportsman ever lived, a Lusitanian (nowadays Portugal) called Caio Apuleio Diocles a raider that used only Puro Sangue Lusitano (edit) during the Roman Empire at the arenas.

Fyrdmen were not supporting militias, it's old theory due to misunderstanding of Anglo-Saxon terms. Fyrd was THE army and could include houscarls, thanes and others, even mercenaries, of very different combat value. Also in UT Tolkien did not descibed Eohere riders as professionals, i.e. they were not always at arms (as evidenced how little of them come to Pelennor fields). They were "fully equipped and trained" for war, but part-time warriors, except three selected eoreds kept by Marshalls at all time.
@hisdudeness832814 күн бұрын
It makes sense in the fact that much of their gear is pretty light and cheap in regards to the armaments of Gondor.
@ydkaachillesa935313 күн бұрын
@@hisdudeness8328 This was due to different traditions, civilizational level and craftsmenship. Tolkien descibed for example their mails as similar to Bayeux tapestry, "but not such stiff" (he probably meaned here size of rings). They should also probably be equipped in kite shields aka Normans instead of circular ones- it would be strange choice for shock cavalrymen to keep the latter. while their legs and lower parts were exposed to enemy blows. Riders from the book also appear to have very colourful shields, clothes and signs; ubiquitus green we see in movies was only mark of House of Eorl. We don't know a great deal about Gondor military either, except guard companies and levies send by fiefs. Recruitment, pay, terms of service etc. are barely known. Compared to medieval armies, Middle-Earth hosts display high level of dicipline, obedience to superiors and military cohesion. Probably it was due to Tolkien's wartime experiences in British Army; he was linguist, not a historian. That is also why he often freely used terms that normally should have great consequences for his world-building, for example "knights".
@luelee616811 күн бұрын
To be fair that would've been considered a professional force by medieval standards. Men whose primary role is to form the nucleus of the army were declared professional soldiers. This is due to the lack of infrastructure that the Roman empire had once provided. In order to maintain a standing army (or more appropriately a well trained fighting population) lords divided their territories amongst the warrior class as payment. Feudal troops had to provide their own training and equipment at their own expense after all.

Minor nitpick: the beacons of Gondor were never used to call the Rohirrim, they were used to call the Gondorian vassals to Minas Tirith.

Neither of you seem to understand what the quote means, its not about the war of the ring its about Gondor not helping Rohan against Wulf and his Dunlending host about 200 years before the events of the war of the ring. Gondor couldn't help due to them being attacked by southrons and corsairs.

We need to do our own fan made films of the lore and keep the LOTR universe true to honor Tolkien. What they keep doing is beyond comprehension. They had to make some random made up girl that the real men who spilled the real blood took orders from its disgusting. I guess that’s what happens when the men do such a good job at defending this bubble of society they genuinely think women would have a chance and it’s just not true.

@bordocofrivia2896 Subversive implies there is a centrally created and enforced set of ideaologies that all people are required to follow under threat of punishment, which is only true in dictatorships where culture stagnates and degenerates under enforced "tradition". War of the Rohirrim contradicts nothing already established by Tolkien, it merely follows the exisitng barebones timeline laid out in the Appendicies. Nothing from who dies to who wins where is contradicted. As for the girlboss, have you even read Eowyn's story? The idea of a woman fighting to protect her people and kingdom is if anything a regurgitation of an existing story in the setting, not something new.
