Armorer Actress Emily Swallow Inducts a Foundling into the Mando Mercs

One of the most brilliant, beautiful, unquestionable things about the #StarWars cosplay community is the generous support everyone shows for people going through challenging times.
I was invited by @clanmurraan to participate in a very special induction ceremony at @FanExpo dallas. Kyle, a young foundling, is reclaiming his courage and his voice over the last year through his Mando cosplay. Heartbreakingly, he was subject to emotional and physical abuse in daycare starting at the age of 2. You can read more about his story at his Instagram page @kopikosplay.
I think many of us can relate to feeling braver in costume - in my own journey as an actor, I have seen how much bolder I am in advocating for the neds of a character than I might be for myself. The blessing is that, in doing so, I AM advocating for myself. The Mercs know this and organized this beautiful ceremony for Kyle to give him a chance to speak up. One day at a time, one cosplay at a time, he is shedding his scars by donning his helmet.
Thank you to Kyle’s family for sharing his story to help others feel less alone. Thank you Kyle for showing us all how to speak up and be brave. And thank you to the entire cosplay community for supporting one another.

This was already touching and wonderful before reading the description - thank you Emily for providing such a special moment to this child! Trauma recovery is hard, especially how it interrupts development the younger the person is, but simultaneously it's well-documented in research that the response by those around a trauma survivor have a huge impact on recovery and resilience. Giving this kid an experience of feeling seen, celebrated, powerful, and welcomed is really important. Guarantee you it means a lot for Kyle to have experienced this even beyond a memory of a special event. Kindness and belonging leave marks on the brain just as much as abuse does.

After my loss of hope I’ve had in our fanabase and how hateful and spiteful it continues to be (especially now), videos like this reminds me that not all fans within the fandom are this way. I think Pedro Pascal was filming The Last of Us while season 3 of Mando was in production and possibly did hardly any actual on-set filming. This is likely why Brendan Wayne and Lateef Crowder got credited alongside him.
