Scenes like this are why I love the returned Guilliman as a character. He is the only person in the Imperium who both remembers how the Imperium once was and who is allowed to talk about it without being immediately shot for heresy.

I love the implication hat Guilliman was recorded in Imperial records as a die-hard data analyst purely because despite having a sense of humor, said humor was lame even during the Horus Heresy to the point of no one wanting to remember him for it. And then he came back only to find that still no one appreciates his attempts at humor.

What I find so funny is that I remember the time before Guilliman's revival. He was regarded as an almost universally hated character, a Mary Sue with no personality beyond "Good At Everything" and insufferably smug. It wasn't until after his revival that everyone realized that there was a likeable person there, it was just that all anyone ever recorded was the greatness, leaving nothing of the man behind it all. As mentioned here, the humanizing details were left out of the histories.

I wouldn't say his revival, the Ultramarines became cool again after Know No Fear. The whole Mary Sue Guilliman thing was because of Matt Ward. The revival just brought him to the fore of the setting, but yeah people did take a shine to Guilliman when he came back and people realized how "human" he is. I think I like Guilliman for a similar reason I like Superman: They're both just Dudes x1000. Dudes x1000 who do not hesitate to fight godlike powers beyond Space and Time, or the evils within mankind, or mighty armies.

It amuses me that for all of Cawl's genius in forging the armour of fate, he didn't think to give Roboute any kind of gripping gloves or rubberised finger pads since he wouldn't be able to just take off his gauntlets.

Great work as always! Warhammer being self aware of some of its ridiculousness is always funny, but this scene also has some truth in reality. I wonder what's been lost on our own historical figures because it was either known to too few or not deemed worth the parchment to record?

I like how the primarchs and Big E are written when it comes to levity. They are so far removed from even their own sons that humor and simply smiling can be scary at times. I remember the Lion cracked a joke about being able to count to 30 and the space marine he said it to was scared he was going to die.

Armour of Fate is always one of my favorite 42k pieces of writing, since it's basically just taking the piss about Matt Ward and a bunch of his more, asinine Ultramarines works. All it'd need to go further would be to call Kaldo Draigo a dumb schmuck and have someone make fun of the words "Spiritual Liege" and it'd be complete.

I always thought of Guilliman being more of a stoic introvert, a man that was always calm and seemingly cold but was really a kind and compassionate person who would always poke fun and would be sarcastic behind closed doors, around trusted friends, or on the rare occasions when the luxury allowed itself The kind of man you would have guessed to be a dick but was really a nice guy, even if only by the standards of 40k of course😅

I remember when i was assigned to a desk job at a previous base, i was required to get into full chem gear for an exercise. We still had to do paperwork in full chem gear, vest, and helmet, including thick rubber gloves over thinner white cotton ones. Humorously, we had to type with a pencil in each hand to hit each key while actual papers became a mess like in this story. One of the most hilarious yet mind bendingly frustrating moments in my career.

Two reasons 1: the armor is paperwork 2: the armor makes his hands bigger. This doesn’t mean much until you realize that he’s almost twice the size of a normal person. Then add in glove/gauntlets as armor and you have a picture. Also he uses a pen for it, no reason but something even Lorgar still does.

This is usually why they're accompanied by chapter serfs or servo skulls during administrative functions.

Luckily many of the Chaos Space Marines have kept their humour, although many of them are the same individuals of the Great Crusade/Horus Heresy. One of my favourite bits of humour is the Emperor's Children battle cry, still shouted even in M42: "Children of the Emperor, death to His foes!"

I do like having Sicarius there as a sort of foil, where the demi-god ends up seeming like the more human one. To be fair to him I believe this is after a trip in the warp where he returned seemingly Not fully cognizant. Though I suppose he was never a barrel of laughs before that either. Seeing marines become afraid is part of what did it. Sheer panic from battle brothers he's known for decades. It's not outright stated that he has it but it's implied in one of the Plague Wars books.

Guilliman fights against countless armies. Defeats foes so terrible that it would send mortal men insane at the mere sight of such horrors. He has fought several Primarch brothers at the same time, surviving (only just) to tell the tale about it. He has been asleep for eons, only to be awoken in the middle of a warzone, waking up in such a foul mood that whe he did wake...the room trembled with gaze. Terrifying Chaos Berserkers... Legendary Roboute Guillinan aka Lord Commander of The Imperium, commander of the Greatest armies humanity had ever produced since the DAOT.....defeated, by a piece of plastic and an ill fitting gauntlet 🤦🤣🤣

It is secretly an elaborate set of orders for the upcoming battle. - Konrad Kurze holds up a skinned child and jokes about it. His sons don’t laugh but some think it is funny anyway. - Lorgar only tells versions of “A priest walks into a bar” jokes. They aren’t funny at all. Erebus laughs every time. - Fulgrim tells a joke but it has so much prose and too many dramatic pauses it ruins the timing of the joke. I feel him. So hard. I wear Mandalorian armour on a pretty regular basis. It is all fun and games until the torso plating goes on. There may be gaps, but due to the large surface of the hard plates, they are useless. It makes it neigh impossible to grab anything below the hip. I like to have my daughter with me just in case I have to pick up a pen or a bottle on the floor. As you also wear rather thick gloves, dexterity with these things is...mediocre. As a real Mando you carry a gauntlet with an entire armory on both of your forearms, these also cannot be removed without major effort to remove your thick, often also armored leather gloves. It may look cool, but practicality...oh boy.
