Learning a running dock start off the side of the dock! will make a huge difference in the options of wings you can flat water pump. I’m 200lbs and can dock start the 925 no problem, just need a good running start! What this test does show is the importance of stall angle in a front wing. The Armstrong HA foils have a decently low stall speed, but a pretty low stall angle. This makes it easy to “push through” the wing at low speeds, and will make it feel really solid underfoot at high speed. Are you guys running the boat at the same speed for all reviews? These newer HA wings might ride wakes farther back when going a little bit faster. This is because as the stall speed of a wing increases, so does the speed of its peak efficiency. Awesome videos, appreciate the unbiased and scientific comparisons!

That's amazing you can dock start a foil this size! I can't. I'm scoring how easy it is to dock start, not whether it can or can't be ... I hope one day I'm good enough to start foils that small! I think surfers are good at it because they're used to going from hands to feet, which I don't have the muscle memory for. We don't always run the boat (jet ski actually) at the same speed. We try different speeds to find the best speed for the foil based on its lift to drag ratio. These small wings can only surf the wake at a higher speed. Larger area wings have too much drag to surf at a high speed and drift back. Thanks so much for the comment. High praise from you! Any foils we should be trying that we haven't yet?

What would be the difference of these tests on salty sea water? The stall speed would change and perhaps other small things
@WakeThief3 жыл бұрын
Sea water has a slightly higher viscosity and density. Small. Like 3% more. Not a big difference. Temperature is where the big change happens, but mostly for viscosity not so much density. Both become much less viscous as temps rise which means the drag goes way down as temps rise. So if we want to break a pumping record we should do it in warm water, not cold. Power to pump goes down, glide distance goes up, speed goes up.

I've been watching your channel since I started kitefoiling a couple months ago, after years of kiting and surfing. Such a great source of info, of experience, and quite motivating too. You've definitely set a standard for foil reviews ! I'm into prone surfing too now (absolutely love it), and I'm also trying to build a dock start setup. Do you think the axis 1010 would work for a 60kg (132 lbs) rider ? I guess the 1150 would be amazing too, but I could get a good deal on the 1010 at a local shop. I would love to get your feedback on this. Thx for that clean work, and keep foiling ! Edit : I just dock started my surf foil wing today that is 1450cm2, (medium aspect). So yes, obviously, it would work great with the 1010.
@WakeThief2 жыл бұрын
Absolutely, Clement. With the dock launcher, I've launched 1600sqcm at my weight, which definitely puts you in this 1200sqcm in your weight. I know some people as heavy as I am able to start much smaller area foils, but they're better than me and take a running start, which is possible for some, but not all (rock starts or no space to run on the dock). I think you'll love the 1010 as much as I love the 1150, as that will be a great wing for your weight ... BTW, the two foils have the same foil section so nearly identical once you correct for our weight difference.
@clemdar2 жыл бұрын
@@WakeThief Thanks ! Pretty much what I thought ! However after chatting with a few other riders, I think I might try the 1150, to really optimize that pumping setup. I'm just wondering now... what fuselage I should use (it really feels like a never ending quest haha) I saw you mainly use the short fuselage. Wouldn't the standard fuselage provide a better glide, and theoretically, better pumping performance ? (I guess you answered this a couple times, so, sorry... I'm just trying to process it !)
@WakeThief2 жыл бұрын
No problem, Clem. I like short as an all around fuselage, but believe standard is better if all you want to do is pump / dock start. Happy to answer more questions. Please keep them coming. If you want to contact me directly, please email at wakethief@icloud.com

That is some serious flex and torsion for a 75cm carbon mast 😳
@WakeThief3 жыл бұрын
A lot of carbon masts are quite flexible in either bending or torsion, especially when the manufacturer is pursuing high speed drag reduction and tapering thickness and width as the mast connects to the fuselage. We need stiffer masts for pumping.
@DaveSails73 жыл бұрын
@@WakeThief Have you tested the Axis carbon mast in comparison?
@cefirmeza3 жыл бұрын
@@WakeThief I am no sure if I follow you. In order to seek drag reduction you lose in stiffness? I thought stiff mast was top priority for speed or any other foil use. How a top surf foil manufacturer as this would want to reduce thickness and drag resulting in wobbly masts not suited for pumping?
@WakeThief3 жыл бұрын
Low drag mast priority over stiffness because of high speeds reached prone surfing and winging. Pumping is slower speed so drag of mast less critical. Pumping also demands higher span front wings which put more bending and torque on mast. Just two different apps for same equipment. Most equipment not designed for pumping. I hope that makes sense.
@cefirmeza3 жыл бұрын
@@WakeThief yes. Thank you for your explanation
@bry86363 жыл бұрын
What do you mean by “If the wingtip breaches the wing won’t ventilate to the center of the wing…” What does ‘ventilate’ mean in this context? And what does increased thickness of the wing do besides increase drag? As in is there ever a reason why you would increase the thickness beyond the need for structural integrity? I ask because the low aspect versions on the Armstrong wings are by far some of the thickest wings I’ve seen- is it purely for structural integrity? Or does thickness have another property?
@WakeThief3 жыл бұрын
Because the wingtip only breaches and not the entire lifting surface, air can’t make its way down to the center of the wing where most of the lift is generated so wingtip breaches can be benign. I had never seen this before and thought it was clever. Perhaps more wings have this dihedral shape at tip for this or other reasons?
@claudiobertadeazevedo46693 жыл бұрын
The wing tip will be in a turn VERY near or at the surface, the deeper you are the more water pressure there is, so at the first 2 inches of water it is LIGHTER than the deeper water below and the UPPER side of the wing detaches the water and SUCKS air, that is actually the very function of the upper wing on anything with wings, it has lower pressure, this lower pressure sucks the wing UPWARD therefore we fly. The guys at Armstrong are tuned to agile and maneuverable toys and decided lifting a little bit of the wing at the end would release the bubbles UPWARD preventing them running down and affecting the rest, it's a sweet spot as you lose a bit of lift and gain riders to enjoy recovering from pre-wipeouts
