To be fair to the Death Korp, they do have specific medics to treat the wounded. It’s just a matter of “Will this Guardsman be worth the resources to be brought back up and rejoin the fight?”. A lost leg or other mortal wound and they’ll be given the Emperor’s Peace. But a non-mortal bullet wound will probably get treated if there’s a medic nearby. And don’t feel bad for the wounded, they would absolutely hate themselves if they became a burden to his battle-brothers or be shipped back home as no long able to serve in the fight. If they became a burden needing extra medical attention and resources, they would probably just kill themselves in order for their body to become corpsestarch, and being useful.

@@CombatVeteranReacts As someone else pointed out, these are the quartermasters in the Death Korps. As in, medical treatment isn't really what they're primarily there for. They are primarily responsible for keeping track of the dead, and reclaiming their equipment. As such, they are also the most likely to encounter a wounded and not (yet) dead Korpsman. They are then supposed to decide whether they should spend medical resources on this wounded guardsman, or if they should just give them the Emperor's mercy. Battlefield medicine probably isn't very high on the list of priorities for supply shipments to the front for a Krieg commander.

@@CombatVeteranReacts the thing most people leave out is cybernetic augmented troops are common in the Imperium so losing a arm, leg, eye is not a big deal and worth saving someone as they are easy to replace. Keep in mind these are not the best bionics but they work almost as good as regular limbs. This is another reason not every soldier is equipped with full body armor like Astartes, Tempestuous Scions, Sisters of Battle and such. Cause most limbs the bloodloss is easy to stop in 40K and replace the limb with something more durable for cheap. High level officers and such can get very good bionics with weapons built in and eye pieces that scan in multiple spectrums and such. Mainly things like heart, brain, lungs and big vital areas where it will cost more then most basic troopers are worth will they just dispose of them. Kreig is more hard-core about this then other regiments due to producing over 50 million Guardsmen each year. Since the Fall of Cadia they are the biggest producer of troops other then Terra itself.

Dunno how realistic this this is but when setting up a trench system the deathkorp will shell the location for trenches with artillery. This leaves craters which they can then use as cover. when in the craters two men will dig a fox hole. Once done they will go back to back and dig their way to the next fox hole forming the trench network. The deathkorp have a type of soldier called a quartermaster. These are the first rung of commissioned officer in the deathkorp. Their role has evolved slightly from when they fought on their irradiated hellhole of a planet after the council of autarchs's rebelled against the imperium. These guys serve the purpose of recovering anything salvageable from the battlefield. be it the lucius pattern las rifles they use, thier equipment or even the soldier himself so yes their role does encompass the duties of a field medic. The officer in charge ordering a bayonet charge is most likely an imperial Commissar. Commisars are like their soviet inspired counterparts political officers attached to imperial guard armies to instil discipline often by force. They aren't above executing their own troops but at the same time they aren't above carrying out acts that they expect troops in their command to carry out. They often lead by example. Problem for commissars in the deathkorps is that they are often put in charge of troops far more zealous than they are. Commissars are typically not from the planet of origin that the regiment is from. The Commissar in question is likely not from krieg. The gasmasks that the deathkorp wear is a throwback to their origins on their home world again. They typically will not take them off even if there's no NBCD threat apparent. The chaos cultists (mortal men, women and in some cases children! grim I know) are often highly fanatical but not highly trained. Armed with autoguns, basic bitch gun powder weapons or stubbers (mounted LMG's) and lasguns if lucky. mortals are generally used as cannon fodder, meatshields if you will for more important units in a traitor army such as chaos space marines and are often flung en masse at an enemy. How fighting positions work is pretty similar; we first get set up along a line and our sergeants assign firing sectors and sector sketches get filled out (like little maps that help with targeting). First you’ll dig your individual fighting positions (usually 2 man) and camouflage them: then as time permits soldiers are to continue the process until a trench line is formed. After that you’ll start seeing secondary and communications trenches start being dug, and OP/LPs established front of the lines. Each centimeter of the front will be by this time mapped and targeted for all the area of effect weapons

this may be a cinematic based on the siege of Vraks. if it is, the unclear call of 'incoming!' may have been because the forces arrayed against the death korp were mostly hastily trained civilians and labor auxilia slaves who were trained to a bare minimum, including using only wooden weapons until they were actually deployed. They scrounged for semi functional gear, including gas masks, because Vraks was an armoury world. And good on the animator having the death korp soldier having a number instead of a name. As for checking on wounded soldiers, in the death korp that is the job of the quartermasters, who serve as a combination of field medic and battlefield scrounger as it is their job to reclaim the gear and numbers from downed troops, assess if wounded soldiers were worth saving, or if too far gone give them the emperors mercy. Another thing is, if this is the siege of Vraks, an increase of earthshaker fire would be seen as nothing special. At one point, they fired all guns, nonstop, for like a week straight. they had enough guns, spare parts, rounds, and replacement crew members that when one gun was either too hot, damaged, or just needed more maintenance, they could pull it off the line, replace it with the same style of gun, fix it, and kept that up for the entire week nonstop all along the entire miles long encirclement. And then they did it, again, for when they got to the actual hive city on Vraks and had to pound down its void shields.

In Trench Warfare, there are usually periscopes and cameras and things, but Kriegsmen don't care and just stand on parapets and stare at the enemy. Not sure if intended or animation error. In the lore, Kriegsmen have medics, who dress wounds, but also harvest blood and organs from the dying. They also prioritise getting soldiers back on their feet over long term health, so a dying soldier can just get injected with drugs and be told to join the line. While it's risky as you explain, the Kriegsmen are not risk-averse and I think the rationale here is that a counter-attack against the enemy a few kilometres from where they're advancing might divert their reinforcements from their attack and help the decimated allies hold their line till they get reinforced. Or maybe even try to attack the flank of the enemy push. Both of these can work in HoI4, at the cost of a few thousand to tens of thousands losses. Huh, in "Generation Kill" series, danger close artillery was below 600 metres, not 300. But I guess the standards would be different for Kriegsmen :P My favourite type of WH40k grenade is the Hallucinogenic one. It gives people who breathe it a bad acid trip and then they're too busy fighting each other and things that aren't really there to mount an organized resistance. In the RPG about Guardsmen, a sharpened shovel is an actually decent melee weapon, better than a combat knife. Oh and in Suvorov's book, he wrote that Spetsnaz sharpened their shovels and used them as weapons, to cut wood, etc.

Also: I definitely agree that a tactical retreat would have bought more time, especially if done in a large scale bounding retreat supported by CAS and armored vehicles but the Germans were pretty adamant on holding the line and repelling the invaders. Combine that with the immense patriotism and the indoctrination through all the propaganda and you got the recipe for strategic disaster, honestly. And on your comment about standing upright in the open battlefield while firing: You would be correct in any other instance but this is the Death Korps of Krieg we're talking about. If any one part of that were to fail there is no more cover and if friendlies were nearby they would most likely be dead as well since it went from gun to grenade real fast, which is a good reason why they're standing alone in an open field. The upshot is that you get to look like an action hero, if you survive.

Just wanted to say that when they said a new unit was coming in it may have been meant that they were being rotated off the line, given the WW1 like setting. I wouldn't expect to have a rout from the Death Korps. They would die to the last man. Which is probably even worse for your point. Whenever the Death Korps is fighting trench warfare, there is likely near-constant artillery barrages going on, specifically to counter the issue of the enemy recognizing an impending assault when the guns open up. This tactic was used extensively during the Siege of Vraks to keep the traitor forces unsure where the next attack would come from. Admittedly, it also depletes ammunition and artillery barrels at a ludicrous rate, but if the Imperium cares enough about a war to send the Death Korps, they're probably also willing to send however many shells are requested. When the traitor says incoming, he was probably referring to the infantry. But if the Death Korps is sending infantry at you, then you are also about to be shelled if you aren't already. They have a tendency to have their lines charge straight into active artillery bombardments. So he's probably right in either case. The plasma gun LOOKS like a Sequana pattern plasma gun though I can't be sure, since it wouldn't make much sense. Either way, it should have a range of probably around 90 meters. I don't know how wide that no-man's land is, but it seems very likely that in order to get into range of the weapons emplacement, the Kriegsman with the plasma gun had no available cover. Which he probably doesn't care about since he's from Krieg. Dying is a glorious outcome for him. Of course, it seems odd that the gun wasn't knocked out with artillery to start with, but if its presence was a surprise (somehow), then I guess it makes sense that the plasma gunner also simply opened fire once he recognized the threat when it opened fire, at which point he might not have had any good cover. I'm not actually sure about how good of an idea it would be to go prone with a plasma gun. Most plasma guns have vents along the underside of the weapon (among other places), so if you have it too close to the ground, some sort of super-heated backblast might become an issue? But yeah even if none of that was an issue, I doubt that a Death Korps of Krieg guardsman would give a shit about taking cover during a charge. These are the guys who will MARCH in formation into heavy weapons emplacements. The grenade was probably smoke. Though considering that it's the Death Korps, there are decent chances that it's a gas grenade, like you pointed out. Krieg use chemical warfare extensively. The traitor forces appear to have their own sealed air sources though so who knows? The traitor was definitely trying to hold the advance back. But depending upon the origins of the traitor force, as well as their subsequent training, they might not be drilled well enough to effectively use the tactics you describe. They may even be breaking without an order to retreat being given. Even Chaos cultists usually don't want to have to face off against Kriegers in close-quarters battle in trench warfare. Judging by the fact that the traitors are mostly using autoguns and stubbers, they probably are not traitor Guard, so are likely either corrupted PDF troops, or a militia raised by Chaos cultists. Which would explain a lack of training, equipment, and lower threshold to break ranks. One aspect I really think needs more notice when it comes to the Death Korps, is related to the point you made at the end of the video. The heavy yet somewhat muted breathing. The Death Korps wear gasmasks basically all the time. They also use voxcasters, which are backpack-mounted communications devices, to communicate on the front lines, as opposed to the voxbeads more commonly used by more technologically advanced (and well equipped) Guard regiments. The officers might have voxbeads, but imagine having to yell commands through a heavy gasmask, as well as the fact that I really doubt that Krieg cares about hearing protection yet LOVES artillery. This combined with the gasmask means it's probably hard to hear things anyway, and the vox operator must be STRUGGLING to relay information to his squad. That must be hell, and I would imagine that it would also really limit the complexity of the strategies and tactics that you're using due to limits in communication. Which probably isn't all that important in the grand scheme when the Death Korps' primary command tends to be, "Affix bayonets," and "Charge!"
@olivinator3 жыл бұрын
Kriegers probably have some kind of hearing protection to ensure that they can be pointed in the correct direction for the charge, and that orders can be relaid effectively. just because they don't care about dying doesn't mean that they don't care about maintaining combat effectiveness until death, and losing communications due to getting their hearing blown out doesn't only impact their own effectiveness, it can also hold back other forces as well and there's nothing that a Krieger hates more than to be a burden.
@StarkeRealm3 жыл бұрын
Not sure about the plasma gun venting dangerous amounts of heat into the guardsman, but if you go prone with one, there's a significant risk of it overheating and detonating in your hands.
@saberz66153 жыл бұрын
Very good take on the tactics and equipment but I have my own theory on why the death korp commander ordered a charge. Most likely his forces were the center line of the trench network as they were getting reinforced by a full unit rather than eastern or western parts of his position. Now seeing as the eastern portion was falling back meant that it must been a large force that assaulted them since that would be needed as the messenger said they taken enough losses to force a retreat. That must have told the commander that there might be a good chance the enemy trench line north of them might have been reduced in manpower to feed such a assault. Next we do not how long the 22nd was from there lines. Not mention how many men he sent to eastern part to hold while he made the call to charge. He also had armor in his reserves that could exploit the break his men would and swing to the east to In circle the eastern forces thus allowing a hammer and anvil type finish.
@noobster47793 жыл бұрын
Also, he had to "make space" for the reinforcements. A trench system can only have a certain ammount of soldiers at a time. Making space for the Kriegsmen means advancing and dying for the emperor

The funny thing is: what you said about "tactically unsound" is pretty much what gets commissars attached to Krieg regiments killed sometimes. Usually, commissars are there to keep the guardsmen in the fight for as long as needed, oftentimes in straight out suicidal situations where their units are getting sacrificed in order to buy as much time as possible. In Krieg regiments, a commissar's task is quiet the opposite. They have to convince the officers that sending in their men into a killzone for hours upon hours non-stop just to deplete the enemy's ammo is not actually the best way of warfare, since saving your men's lives can be beneficial later on. But: "saving your men's lives" is the equivalent of "being a coward" in Krieg terms, and cowardice is a capital crime on Krieg, so if the commissar is not careful with his wording, it can happen that he gets executed by firing squad for said capital crime. Along with the Catachan Jungle Fighters, the Death Korps of Krieg is the only guard regiment that kills their attached commissars on a regular basis.

Something funny about the death korps is that many people think there German based on the name but actually are an amalgamation of WW1 era soldiers and are in fact based more on the french then the Germans due to there near suicidal tendency to charge the enemy from trenches, (note I don't mean that the french were suicidal in WW1 I mean that they would take huge casualties in charges compared to other armies)
@alexmag3423 жыл бұрын
French didn't have a "near suicidal tendency" to charge trenches, wth are you talking about. Everyone charged trenches in mass, coordinated not mindleslly, because there was literally no other way to break through after the moment a network of trenches started being built(which was in order to prevent unnecessary massive losses against artillery which had the effect of prolonging the war and exponentially increasing losses by turning the Western front into a massive continental 2way siege), as you have two fortresses facing each other(this being Germany and France and belgium with allied support both continental spawning trench lines) there is no other way other than wait out your enemy to run out of supplies which wasn't a viable option in such massive siege, since you were sieging countries which were not fully encircled, even if they were it still wouldn't be a viable solution. But people didn't "suicidally" charge trenches, that's a false narrative that has been pushed by media and many academics with neferious agendas

Surprisingly, many of them we actually exist, namely the autoguns used by the cultists (in some sources are listed as being 11mm-ish? and using weight near the muzzle to keep the recoil manageable), missile launchers (minus frag/krak/flakk missiles), the heavy stubbers (as mr. Paul correctly assumed, they are .50cal), the autocannon (think heavy stubber on steroids, 30-37mm, also frequently used as aircraft-mounted weapons or flak guns), and battle cannon used by Leman Russ base tank variant (Imperial Armour books list the gun as being ''120mm smoothbore''). Some books/novels also depict (not sure how reliable) use of said weapons (Gaunt's Ghosts series and Imperial Armour - Siege of Vraks are great examples).

A full version with English subtitles is available. They used actual soldiers and real WWII tanks, airplanes, weapons and all. There were plenty available by then. No Shermans or T-34's posing as German tanks. There are real German Panzer IV's in the movie. There is a fantastic scene with T-34 tanks carrying teams of Czechoslovak storm troopers armed with SMG's, dismounting just after crossing trenches full of their own troops during an all-out assault. This was a drill trained thoroughly in our army back then. You can also search for "Last days of war" by Mauzer. There is no reason for krieg guardsmen to check upon wounded/dead/unknown guardsmen, they have quartermasters for that, in most regiments quartermaster does what u would assume from the title in krieg their job is to go from corpse to corpse( any kriegsman lying on the gorund from wounds is considered a corpse until quartermaster decided otherwise) and see if there is anything salvageable there that might be reused by the regiment, wounded guardsmen are also considered to be part of that anyhting if they are too wounded for it to be considered practical to heal they are counted as dead and if need be given emperors peace by said quartermaster.

Btw. DshK (or Dyshka) is actually a hybrid Heavy Machinegun. You can use it also as a mounted weapon on tanks (like T-54s, IS-2s, or T-55s for example) or HMG to defend positions (It was designed for ground troops), butb you can also repurpose it as AA-MG, It's 12,7x108mm (.50cal. but longer). Soviets also made 14.5x114mm (I dunno, .66cal? and very long) HMG called KPV, that was more used as an AA-MG. Here, heretics (I write without capital "H" because I have 0 respect for those traitors) are using (probably) an autocannon, probably 20mm (unknown length, but I guess it would be around 130mm long), THIS would be more for AA use than DshK, but an autocannon in 40k (and maybe even IRL, I'm not sure) is used as an infantry weapon, to defend positions. For AAs you have: AA-rockets and Hydra SPAAs (Imperial Guard) or whatever you find on the battlefield (Chaos forces).

The three types and others like them based on the French M1929 were 25mm guns. This Heretic heavy gun appears to be inspired by the Japanese version, which was made repeatedly famous because they were the guns mounted on Japanese Warships, though the guns were also land-based and also used in the Anti-Infantry and Anti-Vehicle Roles, typically Anti-Tank in the latter until it became clear that those 25mm rounds were going to bounce off even a Light Tank's armor.

He shouldn't have given the order of attack. Very few of them have a real rank in the Astra Militarum. The most famous of them is Colonel-Commissar Ibrahim Gaunt (You may love reading the novels written about him by Dan Abnett).

So thw Kriegsman with the Plasma rifle absolutely should not seek cover, he's charging for an overload shot which has a 30% of exploding when he fires. In the open he'll live, if be badly injured, but in an enclosed space it would kill him and anyone near him.

A day beneath His light. A day that will be told. Faceless men unto the lands. Where no-ones story will be known. Shrieking fire, erupting shell. Brothers fall in endless droves. Zeal and duty drive them on. Their lives allready gone. Behind the mask a legend hides. A creature made of blood and bone. A kriegsman he is called. A heroes title to be sure. Grenadier or Engineer. Officer or Artillerist. In these uncounted men. Stout of heart and iron-souled. Does proclaim The Emperor his will. Go forth and vanquish them, so the order is. So in trenches and in dougouts deep. The voxxes again calls Kriegs sons to war. A single voice, fueled by thousands. Over the deadend fields they roar. In life, war. In death, peace. In life, shame. In death, atonement. Once again the whistle sounds, and off they go. The faceless sons of a world well known. For when duty ends. He may march, home.

Hey Paul. Could you do watch a few videos by arch warhammer (now called arch). He’s really entertaining and really informative at the same time. I recommend you start with his video on the legion of the damned.

The Krieg boys live to die. But if they are given a reason to live. They become the last thing the universe wants to f with.
