The reason the carriers are leaving port with all their aircraft on board, is they have been doing work-ups prior to actual deployment, so the airwing was landed weeks ago for training flights and exercises. Normally, the ship leaves harbor and then the airwing would join. Apparently someone thinks its a good idea to be fully combat ready, practiced, etc. Returning to port allows you to top up your JP5 tanks, get any extra spares you may need, plus perhaps a liberty call before embarking to the "Combat/Patrol" zone,

Yes. I have been saying for the last 12 to 15 years that China will be the next big one as they've been winning the economic war for more than 2 decades and now people are surprised???? Russia are now another lot we need to watch. If someone doesn't find a way to de-escalate things then war is, unfortunately, a very short time away. People please prepare yourselves and family. Things are getting real so do what you can to try keep your loved ones safe.

The momentum of both countries will result in a war. China has over promised it's people and through fear of losing power they will invade Taiwan and Have North Korea invade the south simultaneously. Current active duty E-5 stationed in Mayport. Did 3 and a half years on the Truman and I can tell you I believe we are going to get a real hard kick in the balls the first few months of a real war. The culture on the deck plates and what is prioritized for promotions is not about winning wars, it’s about looking good on paper. Job proficiency is not emphasized as much as collateral duties, volunteer work, and “sailorization.” There will be a lot of unnecessary lives lost because of the Navy’s peace time mindset. Sailors on my ship were required to go one time during their tour to an advanced DC course for two days, but you bet leadership was keeping everyone on board late if one sailor didn’t have their annual diversity/SAPR/ other nonsense ‘training’ up to date. I hope I’m wrong, but if and when we go to war with China, I will be requesting an early return to sea duty transfer. It will be an all hands evolution, pray for those sailors on the sea folks.

9:00 regarding air wing operations you're correct that the carrier will go to sea to catch the birds. Typically for a WESTPAC the entire air wing flies to San Diego. All the aircraft, officers and enlisted, and equipment. The maintainers will onload their gear and get one last night out on the town, then the next day the ship will depart and over the next 24-48 hours all the planes will land on it. Depending on the schedule and urgency, they may deploy straight away, or they may do some final work-ups before returning to port for a day or two to top off on supplies. The only other way to get aircraft onto the carrier without it being underway is to crane them on, which is only reserved for those that cannot fly due to damage or lack of spare parts. There's almost always one or two in bad shape by the end of a deployment. My first deployment was with the Argonauts on the Vinson, about 16 years ago, so seeing this takes me back!

There is absolutely no way that the Russian Pacific fleet would join the allies to fight China...... Russia and China aren't natural allies but the US's disasterous foreign policy (sanctions and so on) has been a spectacular own-goal: in many ways actually making some under-developed sectors of Russia's economy far stronger and increasing trade and other initiatives between China and Russia. China and Russia have held fairly small joint drills for a decade or so, but in recent years have held much larger scale military exercises together. Not a very smart strategy by the US, to force your 2 perceived biggest threats, to join forces (but an entirely predictable outcome). All the talk from the US really amounts to trying to shut the stable door well after the horse has bolted. @@Gunni1972 Endurance and resilience is a "nice to have" in conventional wars, but if you fail to be at least close to your enemie's technological capacities, you have lost. Take the Japanese in WW2: they showed extreme endurance but were lagging in technology and industrial capacity and thus got smashed from 1943 onwards, when the US Navy finally got it's stuff together. Soldier-by-soldier, the Western Allies never were even close to the Japanese, but in the end, that doesn't really matter. Technically there are 4 wires on the the Reagan however one is only used for the Barricade and on 4 wire decks the 5th wire is also used for the Barricade. USAF (RET) fighter pilot view: Taiwan has TSMC. TSMC is too big to fail. The semi-conductor shortages are already stressing global industry. If China tried to take Taiwan and control TSMC, many industries that rely on devices such as PCs, vehicle computers, phones etc would grind to a stand still. Already Ford and Nissan vehicles sit in stadiums for months after being built waiting for semi-conductors. China WILL try and take Taiwan and cut off semi-conductor supply to the world in retaliation for the humiliating sanctions of Huawei, SMIC, DJI etc. This will spark the war. Luckily, it will be a global coalition against China, as the UK, India, and Japan are poised already to return fire. But the CCP already threatened Japan with nukes, so I expect some Dongfeng nuke action, and a swift ICBM retaliation.
@ashesofempires04

Counterpoint: those factories are insanely easy to knock out. Cutting edge semiconductor fabrication requires air filtration on a level you don't see outside of a biohazard containment facility, and if the building is damaged it could take months or years to clean everything up to a point where they could start making defect-free chips. If China invades, it'll be because Taiwan the country is an open sore on the CCP's national conscience and pride, and they hate that Taiwan is as prosperous as they are without being under an authoritarian boot (not that Taiwan is a beacon of human rights, it's had its own dubious track record. Still better than Mao's China). The machines that make those cutting edge microchips don't get built in Taiwan either. They're sourced from Europe, IIRC. So TSMC could set up semiconductor fabs somewhere else if they needed (and have, in fact a lot of the world's cutting edge fabrication takes place not in Taiwan, and the US is no slouch.) China's biggest threat is to simply cut off exports to any country that supports Taiwan, and to threaten to interdict any shipping through the South China Sea that they don't like. This is what those artificial island bases are for: to establish sea control and threaten the world's trade routes. China is in a pretty powerful position now, because of their position in the world economy, but businesses are already shifting their supply chains around. Both to lessen the sort of supply chain shocks that happen when a country idles all of its production due to a pandemic, in response to increased cost of labor in china (India and Africa are the new china, with regards to labor prices), and in response to China's threats against their host country's economies.
@simonacerton3478
@simonacerton3478 3 жыл бұрын
China can make all the chips it needs. My internal armchair strategist suggests that simply destroying the fabs would be very effective. This would crater the economy and gradually erodes US and allied fighting capacity on two fronts. After containing US retaliation with China's ballistic missile deterrent would allow them all the breathing room they need to create a domestic ability to invade an occupy Taiwan and to capture and or execute anyone with semiconducter skills.

They know full well that they'll be up against a lot of countries if they try. If they can get a strong Alliance with Russia, then maybe... But I don't think Russia had much interest in getting dragged into a big war like that so... The only reason I can see for such a war would be if the internal situation in China gets so bad that they have to redirect the people's anger towards an external threat. But even that seems extremely far fetched.

The aircraft parked, stands in for them. RNFAA does same thing, or did, with Harriers on RN carriers. At least we've got (what appear to be) 2 really great aircraft carriers out of it - with brand new F-35 aircraft flying off them. I think any cost over-runs on the 2 carriers could look like small potatoes compared to what the F-35s will really cost over time.... Let's hope the claimed good things about the F-35 really are really true (That it's still stealthy when confronted with the latest Russian and Chinese technology, and that some of the (obvious) limitations, and problems, with the aircraft aren't as bad as they seem (one of the most alarming things I read, from a good source, the F-35 Joint Program Office, is that the VTOL and STOL versions of the aircraft cannot fly supersonic for more than a few seconds without the risk of structural damage to the aircraft's tail section). I'm lucky, on a regular basis to see the latest aircraft that Russia has to offer, including the SU-57. I've never seen more than 4 SU-57s flying together and I think the Russians only have 10-20 in service (a "guesstimate") but if those aircraft can "see" an F-35 (and they might well be able to - we don't know) that's a big problem when you consider what else the latest Sukhoi aircraft can do. Let's hope the F-35 really is stealthy......

@@grantchallinor5263 You're right, we've got two excellent carriers anyway in the end. I can remember all the times where it was doubtful they'd ever be built, then only one to be built, then only one commissioned with the other sold off. Got there in the end! F35 is probably fine, there's a lot of hyperbole around it and I find often the truth lies somewhere in the middle. Think about it, often the F35 gets character assassinated in western media while Russian jets are described as wonder-weapons. All military equipment has it's advantages and disadvantages, both in themselves and in their use. The interesting thing is Project Vixen, the UCAV/drone tanker/drone AWACS project the RN has got going to supplement to limited number of F35s. RN jumping on the political band wagon of drone-obsession, RN leadership very much got their finger on the pulse in fighting the political battle.

@@stephenconroy5908 I'm extremely worried about the F-35 Stephen. So many roles were added along the way (too many) that it looks so compromised - because it is designed to do so way things, you wonder if it will excel at any of these roles. The RN's variant can clearly do VTOL and STOL (which was what was needed) I just hope it really is stealthy too. I grew up in Southsea, my aunt, for 50 years had an apartment at the very top of Seaward Towers in Gosport (one of the 2 enormous 1960s apartment blocks overlooking the entrance to Portsmouth Harbour) what a view she had: all the ships coming and going, Old Portsmouth, the South Downs, the historic dockyard, HMS Victory.... I think they got the size of specification of the new aircraft carriers spot-on.

@@grantchallinor5263 Love Gosport, the Submarine Museum there is fantastic! Hopefully Project Vixen provides specialist drones that allow the F35 to focus on fewer missions, as I agree it's a bit risky to have a jack of all trades piece of gear. The good thing there though is that it does simplify maintenance and keeps all the spare parts the same, adding one type of drone to this that has mission pods might just avoid the problem of have a smorgasbord of different logistical needs. Does require catapult launch though by the looks of it, just as well the QE's are so big to accomodate the upgrades. I think the F35s will be stealthy enough, what frustrates me is the pace of weapons integration. At the moment they're good for air-to-air and simple air-to-ground, but the long range weapons are still a couple of years away. I'm sure we'll get there, hopefully before anything hot kicks off in the Gulf (or elsewhere...)

Okay, there's gonna be hot war if US can't stand another full sized equal peer alongside itself. That war would be started by US, rest of the world will not accept that. @@YamahaR12015 this. We're already in Cold War 2 with the Chinese and the battlefield is global trade routes rather than a nuclear standoff. China exerts a lot of economic pressure on developing countries to join their trade network and exclude the west. It's just the next chapter in great power imperialism, only China has learned from the mistakes of others over the last two centuries that it's much easier to get countries to do what you want with money and trade rather than overseas armies. Their expansion of the navy is to maintain sea control over their trade lines and territorial waters, similarly to what the US Navy does. In this world, all roads lead to Washington and I personally don't think the Chinese have any interest in a hot war with their biggest trade partner. If anything, they are in the position the US was against the Soviets, attempting to accelerate the collapse of the American empire through forcing us to overspend on defense projects at the expense of domestic quality of life.

Movies most nights, best food in the Navy, camaraderie to name but a few. Then there's the heaps of tradition, for example the ceremony for becoming a bluenose when you go into the Arctic, during which you're gonna be sitting on an ice-throne made from the rubber 'cap' of a torpedo that's filled with water and then frozen, in nothing but your kegs. Other line-crossing ceremonies, such as the Equatorial baptism also help to break up the monotony and dramatically improve morale. Taken from Wikipedia - The two-day event (evening and day) is a ritual in which previously inducted crew members (Trusty Shellbacks), aka Seamen of the U.S. Navy, are organized into a "Court of Neptune" and induct the Slimy Pollywogs into "the mysteries of the Deep".[12] Physical hardship, in keeping with the spirit of the initiation, is tolerated, and each Pollywog is expected to endure a standard initiation rite in order to become a Shellback.[12] Depending on the Ocean or Fleet AOR, there can be variations in the rite. Some rites have discussed a role reversal as follows, but this is not always a normal feature, and may be dependent on whether a small number of Shellbacks exist to conduct the initiation. The transition flows from established order to the controlled "chaos" of the Pollywog Revolt, the beginnings of re-order in the initiation rite as the fewer but experienced enlisted crew converts the Wogs through physical tests, then back to, and thereby affirming, the pre-established order of officers and enlisted. The eve of the equatorial crossing is called Wog Day and, as with many other night-before rituals, is a mild type of reversal of the day to come. Wogs-all of the uninitiated-are allowed to capture and interrogate any shellbacks they can find (e.g., tying them up, cracking eggs or pouring aftershave lotion on their heads).[citation needed] The wogs are made very aware that it will be much harder on them if they do anything like this. After crossing the line, Pollywogs receive subpoenas[13] to appear before King Neptune and his court (usually including his first assistant Davy Jones and her Highness Amphitrite and often various dignitaries, who are all represented by the highest ranking seamen), who officiate at the ceremony, which is often preceded by a beauty contest of men dressing up as women, each department of the ship being required to introduce one contestant in swimsuit drag. Afterwards, some may be "interrogated" by King Neptune and his entourage, and the use of "truth serum" (hot sauce + after shave) and whole uncooked eggs put in the mouth. During the ceremony, the Pollywogs undergo a number of increasingly embarrassing ordeals (wearing clothing inside out and backwards; crawling on hands and knees on nonskid-coated decks; being swatted with short lengths of firehose; being locked in stocks and pillories and pelted with mushy fruit; being locked in a water coffin of salt-water and bright green sea dye (fluorescent sodium salt); crawling through chutes or large tubs of rotting garbage; kissing the Royal Baby's belly coated with axle grease, hair chopping, etc.), largely for the entertainment of the Shellbacks. Once the ceremony is complete, a Pollywog receives a certificate[14] declaring his new status. Another rare status is the Golden Shellback, a person who has crossed the Equator at the 180th meridian. The rarest Shellback status is that of the Emerald Shellback (US), or Royal Diamond Shellback (Commonwealth), which is received after crossing the Equator at the prime meridian,[15] near the Null Island weather buoy. When a ship must cross the Equator reasonably close to one of these meridians, the ship's captain will typically plot a course across the Golden X so that the ship's crew can be initiated as Golden or Emerald/Royal Diamond Shellbacks. You've also got the mid-deployment movie night, which lasts from when chow is served until past midnight.

Have you guys ever considered that the US could be the one starting it all? In modern times, it certainly often has been the case, no matter how we put it. There's always a reason behind a war, that doesn't make it inevitable until someone jumps in and starts shooting. Even the case of Taïwan is to be criticized : let's be realistic 2 seconds here. Nobody cares about the government of Taïwan. It's about having a foothold right next to China. Now take a map and a history book and tell me, is this legit that this island is basically considered more american than chinese, on the geopolitical scale of things? What business it is of foreign countries to assume this island should stay as their foothold, right next to the rising empire? Reverse things, imagine a second that there's an island off the west coast of the US, that is not part of the federal government, and protected by China. How long do you think it'd last before the US plans an invasion / annexion? I sure hope China will solve this matter with diplomacy and tact. If they find an agreement, they can do so, and use their force to deter any stupid idea of attacking them in the process. I am actually more concerned by the US and the Nato '' confederation '' position, who's ego is likely to inflate as the leadership is shrinking, to sing us the song of their people, aka '' We gotta save democracy '' and start what would likely be the most destructive war since WW2. Let us all stay strong in arms, but also mentally. The weapon is to stay hidden, like a submarine. Not using it, is the actual skill and goal. China is not stupid. 5000 years of History, with ups and downs. They've always been after the consolidation of their own gigantic territory. How about keeping an eye on their main focus elsewhere : economy. Check out the Silk Road, the infrastructures in Africa, the deals and harbor acquisitions in the EU, the tremendous amount of trademark applications in both EU and US. They did it without drawing swords, not a single time. There's a lesson to learn here, and economical moves to make.

@@jacobcastro1885 And the point that OP mentions might come before the point in time where China is ready to attack. Even I hope it does, because otherwise, the war is already lost.

Taiwan: am i a joke to you?

@@gaur637 Sorry Taiwan, but yes, you're a complete fucking joke. Look at the Ukraine, which the US agreed it would defend in return for nuclear disarmament. Did America lift a finger to stop Russia? No. What they did instead was refuse to recognise the right of the Russian military to be there. The Russian military is still there, regardless of America's choice not to recognise their right to be there.

I love listening to you talk about the mechanical workings aboard the ships... reminds me of operating industrial machinery at the big theme parks here in the US, you'd be amazed at the similarities.
