Whenever I do it on Total War: Troy it works.... but then my controls get fucked and the middle mouse button doesnt work and instead of the left mouse button allowing me to select my armies it makes them move as if I clicked the right mouse button... and the right mouse button also is the move order... so basically when I use this control it cripples my entire fight .... and I wish I knew why

There's an additional way of forming (unlocked) control groups. When you press G, it automatically forms a group bound to the lowest number (1) and counts up from there. But you can also press Ctrl + *Insert number here* to pick a number yourself. Which might be useful if you, like me, prefer the 2 (or any other number) key over the 1 key. This works in almost every RTS game btw, not just Total War.

Great guides as always! I'd just like to add another neat little trick. By pressing the Shift key you can issue multiple orders. Example: Make the Cavalry go around their units and press Shift and they'll charge after finishing their first order. So you can make orders in sequence.

Also: if you double-click a unit, the camera will pan to it. Really useful when you see an idle or damaged unit in your unit list and you want to locate it quickly.

Thank you for finally being the one to actually talk about movement and the keyboard shortcuts in a total war video. I have been continually frustrated with trying to figure out how KZbinrs moved their entire armies and keep their formation as well as how to draw a path. If I may ask, how do you show the path your army will take in advance when you tell them to move from point A to point B on the campaign map? I will find I tell an army to go forward and they decided to wrap around a mountain and I had to manually keep selecting where they should go but in small distances.

I went out of my way to learn what I could about movement, yet even then, a couple of things stood out in particular from this video. Shift right click and drag (or however it was you did the curved path) was something I've always wanted in Total War that I am very glad is actually in the game. Holding alt when giving an attack order to do a melee attack without enabling melee mode is also useful, and I could see it being used when I decide to run down archers with skirmisher cavalry. Year and a half since you made this video, but good work regardless.

I set my army up like this in every fight pretty quick and this lets me maneuver it easily.

another tip: when you right click move/drag a selection of units, they will arrange themselves in formation on the map in the order that their Unit Cards are ordered in the bottom Unit Card panel (unless theyve already been locked in place in a locked group) IE: Spear card - Spear card - Spear card - Sword card - Sword card - Sword card You can rearrange the unit cards when the units aren't in a group, maybe you want spears on each flank of your sword line so in the Unit Card Panel you would put the Spear Unit Cards on either side of your sword units Unit Cards IE: Spear card - Sword card - Sword card - Sword card - Spear card - Spear card usually i do this during deployment, it makes right click drag/moving multiple units a bit more organized

locked groups ordered to attack will attack the the first target which gets within range not necessarily the target they were pointed toward when you initiated the order. this causes problems with maintaining the line against an uneven number of units and if you arn't paying attention can be blobed and blown away by say one or 2 lord/hero units . also archers within a locked group will usually target individual units and not say focus down the enemy elites.
@tex40965 жыл бұрын
Buts its also good due to them not just bloobing upp attacking the same unit when your frontline collides with the enemy.

When you're right clicking like that to move one unit you actually don't have to worry about hitting "R" for run if you "double" right click. If you press the alternate mouse button, it cancels a movement comand. so pressing lmb if you're using rmb, and vice versa. This is a bit quicker than pressing esc or dragging your cursor off the screen. However, this will deselect the units. In order to keep your units selected, hold ctrl while pressing the alternate mouse button to cancel the command but keep your units selected.

Each grouped battalion has purpose sometimes spear and artillery are grouped swords and monsters are grouped and archers are grouped to front with spare units in front or back.
