To me, the Evil Dead trilogy and Ash Williams are tied to my childhood and am very fond of the memories. There would’ve only one way for him to try and get back to his own time. He would’ve had to find the book in the future, used it to open that portal back in time, then if there’s a way to control what point of time the portal leads to, he would be fine, if not, then he would’ve had to go back to the mid evil times, then drink the potion again and not screw up.

Looking at this scene, the buildings in ruin & the sky looks like the evil has taken over to make the world a living hell. Ash is the man to make it right! I fell in love with this ending from the first time i saw it. In the release of the movie in my language the last line he says was translated as "Oh God! I overslept!" - this ridiculously moronic ending perfectly sums up the entire trilogy! The one at the mall is too "american-ish" and bad-ass for my taste.

This was the original ending for the film. However, Universal wanted the ending at S-Mart because they felt the film should end on a happy note. Sam Raimi wanted this to be the film's true ending because it's in character for Ash to do something foolish like drinking too much of the potion and he likes to make Ash suffer.

The original ending (or alternate ending, depending on how you see it) to Army of Darkness had Ash messing up with the amount of potion he had to take to return to his time, causing him to oversleep. When he wakes up he’s in a futuristic, post-apocalyptic England where civilization has been destroyed. Ash screams “I slept too long!” before the film cuts to black and his insane laughter is heard over the credits. It was a very Ash Williams ending, as he has never been known for his intelligence. But Universal didn’t like it, finding it too depressing, and ordered a new ending to be shot. The original climax could have been the plot for Evil Dead 4, with Ash fighting against the deadites in a post-apocalyptic world all by himself. Universal got what they wanted and the ending was reshot, with Ash going back to his time and bringing the deadites with him as he messed up the words he had to recite - again. Ash then tells his story to a fellow employee at a department store, and as he talks to a woman, a deadite appears. Ash kills it with a rifle from the store, saying “hail to the king baby” before kissing the aforementioned woman. This ending helped make way for the series Ash vs Evil Dead, which caught up with Ash many years after Army of Darkness. While the ending that was shown in the film was also on-brand with the character, the original one feels more of an Ash and Evil Dead ending than the second one, and the post-apocalyptic concept would have been a very interesting plot for Evil Dead 4. The original or alternate ending for Army of Darkness can be found in the DVD and Blu-Ray (and online too), so fans can make their own decision on which ending suits the trilogy best.

According to Bruce Campbell if you guys watch the making of army of darkness on the new special edition, if this ending would've been chosen then the idea for Evil Dead 4 would be ash stuck in apocalyptic London building a army of robots from scraps and metal to fight against the deadites and maybe find the book of the dead again to get back to his time. Ash could find the necranomicon again, open vortex from evil dead 2 and go back to his time.

For a sequel to this movie, then this ending would have been better in my opinion, but since there is none and probably never will be, this is a alternative "bad ending", but of course the theatrical "s-mart" ending of is course cooler and better as a finale to the series for sure :)

According Bruce Campbell, Sam Raimi wrote a script for a fourth movie titled “Evil Dead IV: Ash vs the Machines” which had both endings of Army of Darkness canon by having the alternative ending Ash finding the theatrical ending’s Ash to help him face an army of… robot Deadites! Which probably would’ve had a Terminator or Mad Max vibe. But after Army of Darkness being a flop, Universal felt a 4th was unnecessary and they couldn’t make an Army of Darkness without Universal because they owned the rights to the movie and the story. It wasn’t until Raimi produced The Grudge remake in 2004 that he was interested in remaking Evil Dead (one that originally had Ash in the story.) But was too busy on the Spider-Man films and wouldn’t get around it until the 2010s as a producer.

I prefer this ending more because I feel it has more to say than the supermarket ending. So it's implied that Ash causes a different chain of events that spur into a new timeline where it resulted in much of the world being destroyed. Ash would have been screwed regardless of what happened in the medieval past. The ending was changed because it was too much of a 'downer' but it made more sense than Ash being brought back into his own timeline into his present and fighting off the demon in the supermarket. It bared little connection to what had actually transpired in the past.

That's because the Director's cut of the film was released theatrically in Europe but when Universal picked the film up for distribution in America, they made changes to the film. So that means that TV versions of the film outside of America would in fact be the director's cut.

This right here is going to be the opening for Sam Raimi's Army of Darkness 2. Sam Raimi wasn't sure if he was going to make another sequel after the first movie so he used the S-Mart ending instead of this one. Now since Sam Raimi just confirmed that he is writing the Script for Army of Darkness 2 this summer. We will be seeing this as the original ending for the opening of the new movie in 2015 or 2016. Bruce Campbell will be re-portraying his role as Ash to battle a menace in the midevil era.

No -- Raimi and Campbell have both discussed this ending in-depth. The S-Mart ending was filmed as an alternative because this one was deemed too much of a "downer" by studio heads. Raimi released a director's cut DVD with this ending intact in the late 90s.

The VHS version you have is probably either the Australian or the UK version, because those feature some extra scenes, that didnt make the final movie, but sometimes were mixedup as the real deal. If you check imdb you can find out for yourself!

Both Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell said that if you were to chop off the prologues to both Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness, the rest would be canon. I think there were complications with the original actors of Scott, Shelly and Cheryl or they just didn't have enough time to explain them in the sequels and included the bare minimum.
