Actually happened in my group :) not that my DM was bad at writing women, but 99% of npc were men, by default. We went drinking once, and talked about it, and he was himself shocked that indeed, almost all the npc he was creating were men. He never thought about it before, and therefore did not realise his own bias. Then we arrived to a new city, and he completely changed that :)

So many terrible memories lmao I was in the unfortunate situation where I wasn't allowed to exclude people/make them feel unwelcome at all so had to be crazy gentle when it came to correcting bad player behaviour (uni had a lot of inclusion rules, and I felt very responsible for making people feel welcome), plus even though I was in charge I was still only one of 4 or so regular girls in a sea of male players so looking back I was far too scared of the community rejecting me for being 'bitchy' I think a lot of the media that popularised DnD at the time had sexist undertones (big bang theory, looking at you) so people joined and expected that to be the culture To their credit, almost everyone improved massively when they realised that behaviour wouldn't fly/realised they didn't need to punch down to feel accepted (and those that stayed assholes were iced out pretty fast) Also, it's hilarious that I thought 4 games a week was a lot, for me now that's practically a week off

Some of this made me literally groan in discomfort. Dudes that pull this stuff run women out of the hobby, gatekeep em out, then get mad when they make their own spaces to play in. My dude, my guy, YOU are the problem! Women aren't a monolith, they play this stuff and know what they are doing. If help is needed, they will (more than likely) ask. To Crispy: I over explain too, I usually just ask people to tell me to shut up when I get to something they already know lol
@Allantitan2 жыл бұрын
I agree people should stop gatekeeping the hobby and shouldn’t complain when they do just that
@johnevans57822 жыл бұрын
I agree with you up to one point... in many cases, women effectively ARE monoliths... at least to a lot of the guys who were gamers before the game was inundated with a crapton of mainstream 'Cool kids'. Remember that the majority of gamers who played before the influx were generally social outcasts. Many played D&D because girls wouldn't have given them the time of day if they knew they were playing. D&D was something to hide if you wanted to even try to meet a girl. That's not to say that women and girls never played... but the majority of the time if you saw a female at a game it was someone's 'girlfriend who wanted to play' (Thus, in my experience, almost always meaning either the loss of said player or even the end of the gaming group) A female gamer... a girl who actually LIKED D&D, would be a monolith to many gamers. Until the influx, it would have been rarer than finding a Unicorn. Add to that most somewhat older gamers were taught to try to treat all women as ladies, and to, as my mother actually told me to 'put girls up on a pedestal and treat them like the Princesses they are and the Queens they will become.' You have probably never been in a game store in the 1980s-1990s... I only ONCE saw a female gamer actually come in and actually want to PLAY at a local game store. When she said that, you could have heard a pin drop, it became so silent. It was like watching a pack of starving wolves. The young lady spoke to a couple of DMs and left. I never saw her again. Afterwards everyone was murmuring about it for almost an hour... no one could believe that they had seen a girl who REALLY wanted to play D&D. So, yeah... for a lot of players, women seem like rare works of art by one of the great renaissance masters, up on a pedestal. And despite the fact that they have decided that D&D is acceptable, most of the previously outcast are now outcast in their own gaming community... but now women show up all the time.... lovely creatures of myth and legend, and in many cases, like aloof goddesses. they look down at us from on high with disdain..... Thus... yes... monolith IS an appropriate term. None of this excuses poor behavior or intentional rudeness, or trying to keep women from the hobby. That's just plain wrong. But there's nothing anyone will be able to do to change the fact that women will remain monoliths until the hobby once again stops being a socially acceptable fad. And this is coming from someone who is happily married and never really cared if women gamed or not, so long as the game wasn't interrupted by their presence.

@@johnevans5782 Now i'm not quite sure i'm completely getting your point, forgive me. I as a young girl who was born after the year 2000 haven't really grown up with these stereotypes, however I do know my father has described a similar atmosphere in arcades and game stores. I do assume your view of this is solely from your perspective, and yes, it was definitively looked down upon back then, but I also hear a lot from older women in my life who were gamers back then, who had to keep it a secret because, believe it or not, they'd recieve hell if anyone knew. Though I don't doubt there were huge majority of boys gaming. The notion of putting girls on pedestals as you mentioned stems from combatting degradation of the female gender from back in the day, and i'm not sure it's such a good idea to instill that mindset, but better than people looking down on them, which, is not so different from the term monolith. Women still get so much sh*t for gaming. If they don't it's people who dotes on them, which is not desired either. I don't think Women have or will ever dominate the gaming industry because of how deep rooted prejudice are. These aren't situations of people seeing women as monoliths, but looking down on them and/or seeing opportunities. But to the first point I think the correct term is more correctly something like: "Mythical/etherial" in terms of teenage boys seen as social outcasts. But that's just how i see it, I think we should move towards normalizing and looking past genders rather than making people look up to or treat someone a certain way because of their gender. (Pardon if my english is unfavourable, I am not a native english speaker)
@johnevans57822 жыл бұрын
@@Solitudevv I think that I understand your outlook. First, from my own outlook as an older man, I was taught (By my own Mother, no less) to treat all women as ladies. The way one acts around ladies has its own complete set of rules that are all designed to basically make sure that a man is on their best behavior at all times around women. A man who "Let's their hair down around a lady and acts like they do when just hanging with the guys...is acting in an unacceptable manner. This is not to place ladies below men. It's to place them higher. (Or it's supposed to) ON my end... I have no desire not to treat women as ladies. It harms no one, and merely shows more respect. I cannot speak to the attitudes of those new male players who are mainstream. They don't act or behave like what i know as traditional gamers. For many years, most gamers were the guys who weren't popular. They were the kids no one wanted around. And now... after decades of D&D being a safe space away from the Cool Kids... they are now coming in, taking over D&D, and shoving the uncool kids out of their own hobby, because they still don't want them around. And while there were a lot of male D&D players over the years... WE almost always caught crap for being gamers if we told people who didn't play. It was not just female players. Now I do understand some of the issued female gamers deal with from the old school gamers. Those guys who thought they would never meet a girl who games, suddenly meet one. Unfortunately, it gives rise to the forlorn hope that this girl might actually like them. It doesn't justify bad behavior, but it explains why male gamers react the way they do to some female gamers. Also, in my own experience, there were a LOT of "female gamers" who didn't really want to be gamers and ruined the game for a lot of people. It was almost a formula: A member of a Game group gets a girlfriend. OK. A few weeks later, he asks if she can play because she wants to share his hobby. The group agrees. The more the merrier. Then the girlfriend shows up and plays for about 3 sessions... then gets bored. Then she starts trying to turn the game into a social group. (Brings alcohol. Wants to invite other girls who she thinks the other gamers should meet. Wonders if it would be OK if we all watched a movie instead.) If this tactic fails and the guys still want to game, the girlfriend starts to come up with other stuff on game nights that she demands the boyfriend do with her. It's not long until the guy has to leave the group and "stop playing that dumb game". to keep their girlfriend. This can cause a group to be a player short... or worse, if it's the Dungeon Master... this ends the group entirely. THIS is the thing that caused a lot of guys not to take female gamers seriously for years... and caused no small amount of resentment. Imagine... if every time someone you know in your game group gets into a relationship, you know deep down inside that this could mean your happy gaming group is doomed. On the other hand, in those rare cases where a female gamer liked the game and kept playing (less than 10% in my own experience) I always saw them welcomed. I'm happy that more women are gaming. I have tried to little avail to get my own daughter into the hobby, but she thinks it's boring; and my wife, while she fully supports my hobby, doesn't like playing. Unfortunately. guys like girls; and sadly, that tends to bleed into gaming as much as anywhere else.
@Solitudevv2 жыл бұрын
@@johnevans5782 Ah, yes i can see the dynamic, you can apply that to many friendgroups as well. In my experience it's just not a good idea to introduce ANY person into a long term game to see if they'll like it. But a game like D&D is probably something you have to be interested in learning before someone tries to drag you in. I can see the frustration, especially back in the day where all the few associations you'd have would be this girlfriend fomula. Oh and i didn't mean to imply that guys didn't get hate for gaming, I merely meant that your story about people being shocked and talking in the game store was part of why guys probably didn't meet a lot of girls who also played. I hear many got hate from the male "outcasts" as well so if they could they'd form tiny classified girl groups. I am however curious what you mean about the "outcasts" are still outcasts to the "cool kids"? I assume this is within the D&D field of gaming, which I am not all that active there anymore. I'd assume all the "outcasts" more or less was just older when it became cooler and age groups tend to stick together.

In the area of helping, I play in several groups as a dm and player. Been playing 5e since 2018. At first I felt like an over explainer, but when I realized how many other people in my groups know the rules too, I've started only helping players when they make a direct inquiry to me. Could be sitting next to me to quietly ask for mechanics or during session 0 when I get a very direct eye contact that is an unspoken ask to clarify what the dm just said about character creation. My advice, help when asked. And if youre good, you'll get to help regardless of your over explaining

For all new DM's here's what you do when you find yourself faced with a "that guy." Look them right in the eye and repeat after me. "Do you like playing in MY campaign? Do you want to KEEP playing in my campaign? Stop acting like a brat or I will kick you out. Play nice, be a decent person or LEAVE. This is your one warning." It's one thing to listen to player complaints, be gracious about critique, and compromise, it's another thing to be disrespected or have your party feel disrespected by the actions of "that guy." And I promise, while new DM's always worry it will make their players uncomfortable, they will be happy to see "that guy" leave.

Intro: If you don't understand the female or male body, don't try to have control over them. Sadly, it's the ones who need to understand this the most who don't realized how limited their actual knowledge is. Girls are too Sensitive: I remember the first-half of this one from Critcrab. Surprising how much was cut out. Anyway, this story is why I have doubt the "new player is a girl and I fear for my grimdark campaign" seeking help post in a previous video was a troll post (though the possibility was tOPhere). How did That Guy not expect the DM to do grimdark stuff in a setting you are fully aware id grimdark? Also, an important tip for DMs: If you say something in session 0, you need to enforce it. OP didn't when she said that she was do light homebrewing, and That Guy took advantage of her. Glad that she got better at handling this BS, but do take note from other's mistakes. Also, rescheduling without telling the DM was either him being an idiot or trying to make OP look bad and have the party turn on her. Neither would surprise me. It's not me, it's the Setting: Fuck this DM. I don't say that lightly. He claims the campaign was to involve sexism and racism in the game, yet only did the sexism to the IRL woman (excluding the female character played by a dude) and no racism (and base on what OP says, it sounds like there were opportunities for that). And it was being done to the point of OP not having fun. Claiming the setting was sexist and racist to justify being those to the players instead boils my blood (which will hopefully cancel out my cold). As Crispy said, sexism, racism and any other prejudice is fine at the table as long as everyone is OK with it, it was presented from the start, and it isn't limiting anyone's enjoyment. The DM wasn't doing it for the right reasons, though. Let me Roll for You: That Guy made my skin crawl. I can't imagine the discomfort having someone like him sitting next to you, breathing down our neck and trying to touch you whenever you tried to play the game. I think he was hoping it would end like one of his hentais and have the club president wanting to bang him for being so cool and savvy. He wasn't either of those, just a creepy who treats experts like children if they have boobs. All Girls play Tyranids: I'm pretty sure this is a -ism trick for generalizing a group by trying to portray them all as having the same traits or opinions. It's bad and used to devalue their individualism and justify prejudism. Not like That, Like This!: When they single you out instead of actual newer players, that's when you need to talk to them. Could be that they are trying to be helpful, but was raised to see women as not understand things correctly or always needing help and accidentally contributes to the problem. OP is the club president and has asked for help before from the sounds of it. If they can't stop trying to be overly helpful, than they may not be able to play with women without being a problem (not a That Guy level, but still). Token R*pe Story: Was afraid we would have one in this mega post. And the DM was still being sexist (and worst) since it was still the two female characters being assaulted even if not the female player. He's the inverse of It's the Setting DM. Both were being sexist, but in different ways. At least he left and never came back. Classic Female DM: Got to love how those two players agreed to something and bitch about what they agreed to there was no fine print or trickery involved (as far as we know at least). Got to love when using the rules you both agreed to is you being controlling. And them saying that OP doesn't get any sex and was sleeping around at the same time shows that they aren't trying to give valid criticism, just finding reasons to hate OP due to her sex. At least OP was able to redo the mini-campaign with other, better players. Screamed at me for Flirting with an NPC: It's a roleplaying game. People roleplay characters in TTRPGs. It's disturbing That Guy couldn't understand that and took it personally. I can't imagine him being any fun to date in real life, if he flips out on that. Pay Attention to ME!: I have no idea why he joined if you weren't there when he joined. Maybe there was another female player that left because of him. If he was a power gamer, he wouldn't have wasted actions attacking OP. And no, if it happens often, it's not "metagaming" to call out a character targeting another character, and it's reasonable for the player to call out the other player. The DM should have stepped in at that point and stop That Guy at that point. I got a Nat 20 to Seduce Her!: At least he got better from the sounds of things. It's nice when problem players realize the error of their ways and improve to be a better player. Stared at My Boobs for 4 HOURS!: I just looked up what a jumper looks like. Don't blame the woman for other staring at her creepily when what she wears isn't revealing at all. Got to love blaming women for the actions of men. I won't deny I would also look at her breast (since I am a bit of an incel), but I wouldn't fault the woman for having breast, but myself for being a horny creep. Sit and Play: That Guy's first love, and OP suffered for it. At least it sounded like she was able to talk him about and he left after realizing that he fucked up every way possible. Still didn't sound pleasant for anyone involved. You can Do No Wrong: I hate stories where the problem player and/or DM makes the group hate OP for something that isn't their fault. OP should have said something to the DM, though I'm guessing this was still early on and before she was more willing to confront people. It's rarely easy, but often needed. Slut: I'm a religious dude and even I will not pretend that sleeping with others isn't very sacrilegious (at least when both parties give consent and there isn't any cheating involved). He can't even pretend it was just his character being weird about sex, since he was claiming that's how OP was in real life. Glad OP was able to call him out for his behavior. Fridging Female Characters: For those not in the know, fridging is when a character is killed just to motivate the protagonist, at the expense of the victim's story potential. It's a terrible trope, and worst than Damsel in Distress since at least the latter can do stuff while imprisoned, be their character while imprisoned, and is rarely prevented from having their own story/continuing their story afterwards. Glad the DM was able to improve when OP explained to him the problem and how it made her uncomfortable. Commentary: Yeah, people need to have rules that can result in being kicked when they break them. A warning first to be fair (unless they do something way too heinous for a warning), but still practically a guaranteed if they don't straighten out their act. Never expect everyone to be mature, responsible adults. Problem people will take advantage of that generosity.

your comment at the boobs part: the fact that you don't blame her means you're no an incel. still, oggling at woma's chest is still creepy. There is definitely something wrong when guys make it to college without interacting with girls. Like I feel like this is something we need to look at on a societal level that we can fail our kids that badly. I'm not saying they're not responsible for their behavior, they absolutely are. But this feels like it runs much deeper tbh.
@johnevans57822 жыл бұрын
I have to disagree. I'm happily married with kids, but I can tell you that as someone who was always the new kid in school, who was short and not attractive, who was working to become an Eagle Scout and didn't hide it, who was in band and choir, and who was very poor... Girls would have nothing at all to do with me. Every time I even tried to approach them I was rebuffed before I could speak. In school work groups, most girls would not even talk to me unless they had to, and when they learned I was going to complete assignments with or without them happily just let me do everything. In the end, I was in my 30s when I met my wife (not a gamer). I have a great son. He's 19 and starting College. He's a high functioning Autistic... meaning he has severe social issues, (Primarily anxiety). He found out early on that other kids were mean to him (Kindergarten). He tried to fit in in 1st grade and they were still mean to him. At that point he gave up and other than when he was in Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts at my and my wife's insistence, he has not bothered to socialize with anyone. The ONLY change in this was when he started gaming. That is his only desired form of human interaction. And the reason is not that his parents failed him... it was that not a single kid ever offered to be his friend... from 1st grade through his high School Graduation. Not an invitation to a birthday party... not an invitation to a play date... and no interest from girls in school. He likes girls well enough he says, but they simply act as if he does not exist. The problem isn't a failure of the parents. It's the actions of the mainstream that rejects those who are not capable of or not willing to fight for a place among them.

The thing about conventions and regulation is one of the things I like about Dundracon. They have made it clear that a GM can kick out a player for making people uncomfortable. Admittedly, I think a lot of GMs don’t realize they can actually exercise this power outside of the most extreme situations, but they’ve told GMs they can when they bring things up, like someone with main character syndrome being repeatedly disruptive about their need to be the center of every scene. They also have content warnings and limits. I’ve had good experiences with the con. Admittedly, I avoid the more popular systems like D&D and Pathfinder at the con for various reasons that have nothing to do with the players. However, given those are more popular problem behavior might be more common, who knows.

I have few character ideas in mind that I’d like Crispy’s opinion on: -a drow tempest cleric of the Greek gods in general, though Poseidon specifically, who has a holy symbol in the shape of a trident. I kind of wanted him to have an actual trident as his holy symbol, a blessed replica of the actual legendary Trident of Poseidon, that is used only to cast spells with as a cleric and not as an actual weapon in melee combat. I want his backstory to be him rebelling against standard drow behaviors to the point he runs away from home while still a child by elvish standards, somewhere between 10-20 years before elves would be considered adults, and eventually end up in a temple dedicated to the Greek gods. He would then be ordained as a tempest cleric of Poseidon when he comes of age at 100 years old and then go on to rise through the ranks of the priesthood of the temple for anywhere from a few decades to a century and some change until he becomes the High Priest of Poseidon, upon which Poseidon will charge him with spreading the faith of his temple and specifically worship of Poseidon himself throughout the realms, which would be his impetus for leaving his temple to go out adventuring. -a succubus wizard character that cares more about studying to become a master necromancer than actually doing, you know, succubus stuff. She still does that kind of thing though, but it’s less of she does it because she’s a succubus and more that she does it just to make sure she still can if she needs to. She works as a librarian in a magic library dedicated to the dark arts, such as necromancy, where she studies magic in her spare time. Naturally as a succubus she’s sexually attractive to most people and has all the abilities that a succubus/incubus typically has. She can even use this ability to switch between male and female as needed for her purposes, and has no issues playing into the “sexy librarian” trope for the library patrons. But overall she’s much less interested in sex demon things than she is in studying magic. When she finally reaches level 20 I’d have her become either a warlock patron or a defense lawyer that specializes in sex crimes and murders, sex crimes because as a succubus she’s probably going to be able to instantly tell whether or not someone is guilty of such crimes and even if the victim may or may not be lying about being a victim which does happen in reality more often than you’d think it does, and murder because as a necromancer she’d be able to literally summon forth the victims of the crimes her clients are accused of for their defense. Perhaps she could do both, that is to say be a lawyer and a warlock patron, the pact she forms with her warlock would be in the form of a legal contract with lots of legal speak bs that defines the terms of the agreement such as method of payment in exchange for magic, expected behaviors of the warlock for the duration of the pact, even an exit clause on how to terminate the pact if necessary with the stipulation that the warlock cannot form another pact afterward for X amount of time after the termination of this pact. Neutral Evil seems like an ideal alignment for a lawyer, right? -a satyr druid who believes that his druidic arts are the only way for him to find the lost god of the wild and restore them to full power, thus saving the natural world in the process, kind of like how the satyrs in the Percy Jackson series are obsessed with finding Pan to save what’s left of the wilderness in the world. The twist though is that the god of the wild isn’t just lost but is actually dead and gone, thus allowing the humanoid races to pillage and plunder his domain to their heart’s content, and that this character will eventually be crowned the new god of the wild by nature itself after reaching level 20 as a druid. -a dragonborn sorcerer with purple scales due to being the child of a red dragonborn and a blue dragonborn. Basically a female Spyro motif for this one, her racial abilities come from her red dragon ancestor while her sorcery comes from her blue dragon ancestor. -a vampire rogue who, prior to becoming a vampire, was a master thief that could break into anywhere and leave with his stolen goods without a trace. A legendary phantom thief, so confident or cocky about his abilities that he loved leaving calling card immediately before he would commit his crimes as if daring his victims to try and stop him. One night he makes the mistake of trying to steal from a powerful Vampire Lord he left a calling card for, a vampire powerful enough to resist the usual radiant damage a vampire usually takes while in direct sunlight, and subsequently gets caught by said Vampire Lord while trying to make his escape. The Vampire Lord actually admires the balls it took to actually try and steal from them and so instead of killing the infamous thief they turn him into a vampire, and the rogue serves his new master for several decades to a few centuries. In the former case, the vampire lord would be killed for some reason thus freeing the rogue from his sire bonds and making him a true vampire, and in the latter case he might be seeking to kill his master to free himself after learning everything about the vampiric arts from them so that he can become the master vampire perhaps even become the next vampire lord once his sire is dead. -a Minotaur fighter with an entertainer background as a gladiator. -a wind genasi ranger who fancies herself to be a master huntress. -a halfling mystic of the order of the immortal who goes out adventuring so she can raise money to start a hospitality business like an inn or a tavern or something like that, and her skills as a mystic would aid her in maintaining security for her business so she isn’t robbed by intrepid thieves or that her customers aren’t assassinated in their sleep, basically creating a true safe place for other adventurers in the future who need a place to stay for a while in between travels. So, what do you think?

I just found this channel after Crowe's and I couldn't resist the question as Im new to these kind of videos. Why are there 3 animals telling DnD horror stories. Crowe is a Crow, Crispy is a Mouse/Rat(?) And there was a crab suggested to me lol. Its cool but im just curious. Edit: A red dragon's channel was recommended below this video too, is this a community thing like a collab?

(op) same dude would go to warhammer tournaments and complain when people didn’t paint their models to match official artwork, really cringe guy. I actually met up with him fairly recently and he’s so much more chill now

Holy shit that rogue trader campaign sounds like a guy I played with, but instead of meta gaming the fuck outta us, he just used the fact we didn't know w40k and he did to abuse the fuck out of us and the game, definitely one of the worst game I've ever played in

My horror story about a game with a girl DM. I was playing a boorish barbarian with a charisma of 8. Somehow, kept ended up having to play face for the party. I'm sweating bullets as I wait to see if a combination of his negative attitude and that penalty to his charisma based skill checks will botch things horribly. Luckily, it never lands us in hot water... But holy shit I was never so stressed in my life playing a TTRPG before. I even paused the game a few times to OOCly ask if anyone wants to maybe step up before the rude mercenary asshole opens his mouth to the prince who decides their fate. I was certain we were going to die literally the whole time. Yeah the DM being a girl has nothing to do with the story. Just a cautionary tale about assuming who will or won't be face! May your rolls be high, unless you're playing Dark Heresy. And remember to pitch in for pizza, folks!
