I see a video from y’all i click it. Not in the tactical realm but I do maintenance for a school district and will soon be teaching here and think tactical preparedness and having a somewhat tactical mindset applies to everywhere in life especially in this day in age.

Thanks for pointing out the weight distribution. My big game hunting pack was killing me for years until I accidentally discovered putting the lighter stuff on the bottom. It's crazy how much easier it is, especially steep inclines going after elk. I like your gear setup. I like to include a really loud whistle, such as a "Storm" whistle, and a small harmonica. If I'm lost, injured and unable walk out, the whistle gives me hope of being heard and the harmonica will keep me entertained until I get rescued or die. If you see bear or mountain lion scat with both a whistle and harmonica in it, then you'll know what happened to me. 😅

I provided a fire watch for a mining company, baby sitting a crane and at the time my car didn't have all wheeled drive or 4x4. I hiked 3 miles in and 3 miles out with a sack similar to that, from 4 in the morning to 6 at nite, I used dry bags and a rain cover. I just never considered construction graded trash bags for additional waterproofing. I carried spare flashlights, food, coffee boiler, tea kettle, couple pew pews to fend off mountain lions which was a no no but I still did, vhf radio and a stomp medical bag. Nearest hospital was 35 miles out.

All great tips! Here are my hacks: 1. I use a trash compactor bag to line my pack. Thicker mil and won’t tear when something snags on it. Lasts for years. 2. No compression sack for my sleeping bag. I use the thinnest sack and then smash it sideways at that bottom inside the pack liner so it’s always dry. A dry bag is a life saver. 3. A rain shell/jacket draped over my head and pack works to keep me dry as I’m usually leaning over anyways. I don’t like rain gear as they drench me with sweat. 4. Heavy plastic sheeting taped into a tube as a tent. 5. Fanny pack that clips to the shoulder straps in front for map/compass, water, water treatment, snacks, etc. Dana Designs made a good one when they were around. 6. Food goes in plastic shopping bags. You can sort by meal type, they’re durable, easy to replace, pack easily, and have handles for hanging at night.

10# of s**t in a 5# bag - some good tips, however; I know nothing of gunfighting and seizing airfields, just an old guy who's been recreating in the boonies for a long time - but putting everything light at the bottom and skewing the mass to the top seems dubious. In my experience a mixed approach has offered better cg distribution. Long duration sleep kit at the bottom, food and cook kit and mass in the middle close to back - extra clothing snivel gear in the space between, water kit, quick shelter and warmies at the top. Headlamp, extra snacks, boo boo/hygiene kit, beanie in top pockets. And never rappel with a big pack on!

I never trusted civilian packs, seen to many of them fall apart aside from the Chinese made garbage. So I always go back to dear old ALICE. What I carry in it I generally never advetise it, but the shelter items you shown, and being that I live in a tropical / sub-tropical environment ( Florida ) A bug net with floor built into it, or a hammock, and a Basha Tarp. I use the inflatable sleep mats and the poncho liner most of the time, really all I need. Plus food and water and ways to get food and water. ( Survival Kit ) Great video, informative.. Thanks....Just another old 0311. 1st Btl 3rd Marines.

Great content- but disagree on map sheet and land nav stuff placement , the back up to your Garmin should be on your body-cargo pant pocket or RACK inner pocket, if you ground your ruck and can’t get back to the patrol base or release point- you are screwed if your battlefield net or ATACS goes down-it happens. We were taught always have 3 plans for NAV and COMMS. Just my opinion, you asked for comments- those are mine👊🏼--keep crushing it and teaching others great fundamentals 🇺🇸🤙🏼 Wish we had these resources back in the day!

Get a lightweight, strong, medium size travel umbrella. Instant shelter for a quick brew and break from relentless rain.....and for military can provide instant hide...if suitably cammed ...do need to break/bend top and bottom edge to make less obviously a curved line....still works though....and put in a hole to look through. Used in the jungle and elsewhere...and oh yeah....if you're thinking wtf!? German snipers used similar in WW2....training films on YT....'Instructional video World War II German sniper Training'

Large ALICE could have used a chest strap back in the day, I also never used the waist belt on the hip pad. today I use a USGI issued medium rucksack for 1 or two overnighter trips. Large ALICE gets jealous, she stays in the basement.

Not me, I get it, to you Rangers that is light. To me its still a refrigerator and I carry far less...got used to happy feet after a day of fast moving now.

This was awesome. Looking forward to the other ones from this fella. I like to use an inflatable sleeping pad plus a super light shooting pad (basically just to lay under the inflatable as protection. Takes up way less space in the pack.

This is the first time I’ve heard light stuff on the bottom instead of top. Is that a purely military rucksack kind of recommendation or does that apply to a large pack with hip belts??

Pack that heavy stuff as close to your center of gravity as possible. Much easier to balance and requires less energy for movement. The fact he's not planning to use the hip belt greatly shades his advice. Humping a pack all day without transferring that weight to your hips sounds like torture.

Most backpacking guides (not just military) will tell you to pack bulky/voluminous items low down, and dense/heavy items higher (and closer to the wearer's body. It's not strictly heavy vs light, but that's really what we're being told here.

Most veterans will tell you that they never used the hip belt when rucking, especially in combat because when you come under fire you don't have time to mess around with a waist belt and quick release shoulder straps.@@YouveBeenMiddled
