Here are 3 joint locks I used in combat. Today we use them on our creative director Evan (insta: warrior_poet_designs.) These joint manipulations are not for hand-to-hand combat, so if you pictured some MMA or Liam Neeson kung fu action moves, remember a soldier gains compliance with guns and not with fists. These techniques are excellent ways to control folks you need to escort around various battlefields, especially when language barriers could be overcome using the universal language.

"Everyone speaks pain..." Except drunk guys... I used to be a bouncer and I used wrist locks and joint locks regularly to force compliance. 90% of the guys would get the message from a well-placed joint-lock. But a couple times something got lost in translation and I had to apply a little more force. I had a guy in an arm bar (yes, the BJJ kind) and he still proceeded to try an bounce my head off the pavement despite the fact I outweighed him by 40 pounds. On the other hand, I had a guy try to pull a knife on me from a belt sheath (folding Buck knife) and I grabbed his wrist with both hands and he literally started crying like a girl. I led him out of the bar that way. When I let him go, he whined "you almost broke my arm!" I said: "shouldn't have gone for your blade." "I was just gonna scare you with it..." He said through his tears. "You did." I replied as I walked back inside.

Andrew Smith Pain tolerance. I've had my fair share of medical problems growing up and it's made me tough when it comes to pain and I've experienced that it makes any non volitile locks (non joint damaging) fairly ineffective.

Yup they sure do work! 18 years in security and 14 in a LEO job. I’ve taught Force Options and studied aikido and judo. Joint locks work very well you need pressure and counter pressure. For example, the wrist lock requires pressure on the top of the hand. The counter pressure is applied at the back of the subject’s elbow. Without that stable counter pressure the technique fails. Just remember that pain compliance isn’t always reliable. Some people have very flexible limbs. Some are high/ mentally ill and some have an incredible pain tolerance. Have a back up plan for each technique. Great demo!

One thing to keep in mind with joint locks is that they loose there effectiveness over time. The longer you hold a joint lock the less effective the pain compliance aspect becomes, at that point you either have to break it or transition to a different joint lock. Don’t take my word for it. You can test this on yourself by having your training partner apply a wrist lock on you. You will definitely find that, the longer your are in that position the more the joint relaxes and the pain decreases, because the joint is essentially being stretched. It’s important to keep in mind you cannot hold the same joint lock indefinitely without it loosing its pain compliance effectiveness. If the lock is no longer causing pain chances increase that subject you are trying to control will find a way get out of the joint lock. Also, the pain compliance aspect of joint locks does not work on drug crazed individuals. So, in my opinion joint locks are best used as a diminishing technique to cause incapacitation by breaking the joint immediately, or to be used as a temporary control until you can find a better way to restrain the person.
@coryowen3294
@coryowen3294 5 жыл бұрын
Damn internet ninjas😑 always gotta be so in depth with everything. Jk lol but that's why you don't hold the lock with the maximum amount of force. If they try something you can still put pressure on it and they will still cooperate. I do agree with locks not being very useful again people on drugs. There are cases of them getting hit by cars and getting right back up.

Joint locks are a great way to convince someone to do what you tell them to do, without necessarily inflicting any real harm. The mere threat of joint breaking/dislocation, is sufficient to make anyone comply. I've used some joint locks in Iraq (I was a medic, not SF, or high speed kind of guy), when a local we were dealing with didn't comply with our instructions. It doesn't take much to make someone submit. I was in Baghdad in 2004, at the Al Salam Palace (turned into a pile of rubble by the Air Force), attached to the 2nd Cav, 3rd BCT. Thanks for the videos. Great content.

John, as a retired LEO, we used the bent wrist method to control subject(s) also. But it was a modified version. Instead of bending the wrist downward as you demonstated, we turned the hand over with the palm up opening the hand and straightening the fingers while gripping them, and then pulling them itoward the forearm. This bent the fingers and knucles, so the majority of pain was in the fingers and knuckles, plus it took not as much pressure to "lock out" the fingers to actually produce a more desirable effect. Finally, we found that some people were more flexible in the wrist bending downward in the "bent crain" technique," so more force had to be applied, compared to the "bent chicken wing" technique, as we referred to it. This technique should not be attempted, without training from a qualified instructor, being injury can occur. Stay safe.

Aikido (the geriatrics of martial arts) teaches how to break those arm and wrist locks and not only hurt your opponent but embarrass them as well. You never know who the most dangerous man in the room is and nothing like getting an a$$ whooping from an old guy. ;-)> But, they are great control methods.

Can confirm. Aikijitsu (or however you prefer to spell / pronounce it) is truly devastating. That being said it is only useful once you are able to flow and transition from unexpected counters successfully. In other words it does require some experience and training time looking or feeling for the next opening. Damn that shit hurts. Think combat aikido; most definitely NOT a soft style kicks punches elbows knees breaks ground fun yup. It's got it all.

I was taught that first joint lock in the corrections academy. We called it the transport wrist lock. We could still use it if they’re in waist restraints and they decide to get squirrelly out on transport.

Back in the 80’s I worked along with two of my friends at The Mojave airport. We worked building shipping crates for drop tanks. On our breaks we would go into this room that had no lights, it was loaded full of bubble wrap. We would wrestle around trying to kill each other, I survived by employing joint locks, arm locks, etc...That was great fun and it also taught us how to fight by feel not by sight: Very important.

That first hold is one I learned in the state police academy over 30 years ago; we called it the goose neck come-along. Love your videos, wish we’d had these back in the day. Young people just don’t realize the great resources out here.

Very cool video, absolutely love the thumbnail title because its so true. That reaction, when your opponent is trying to use his other hand and you tweak the joint lock to stop it, has a fancy name: cross extensor reflex action. Its one of my favorite things to demonstrate because it effectively shuts down the whole conversation/argument about what someone can do with their free hand when you have them in a joint lock.

It's amazing how many Jiu Jitsu concepts are used/taught even in combat yet people still say the efficiency of it doesn't work in real world. The wrist lock is nasty, I've spanked my own butt to tap from that lol. Really cool video.

Good short video. Those locks do work, no question. The only challenge is getting people into those locks, because nobody stands there and lets you lock them. However, that's what training is for! Good stuff! Signed 5th Degree, Jujutsu.
