One question. ”The pie has been baking” at beginning of the video. The pie is the subject. If I say ”I have been baking”. Is that means, that I am inside the owen to burn (bake)? Or ”I have been baking the pie” or ”The pie has been baked” (passive sentence). I am confusing…Kind regards and thanks for excellent videos Markku
@ArnelsEverydayEnglish
@ArnelsEverydayEnglish Жыл бұрын
That's a really good question. Yes, normally we use the passive voice if something cannot do the action itself. We wouldn't say: The book is reading. We would say: The book is being read. But, many times we can use the active voice if it's clear that something is happening: The store closes at 9. (We don't need the passive voice even though a store can't close itself.) The pie has been baking... - First of all, the present perfect continuous cannot be changed into the passive voice. So if I want to make "the pie" my subject, I just keep it active. - If you say "I have been baking" then no, it does not mean you are in the oven. Both of the above sentences can be about the same idea, but your subject can change depending on what you want to focus on. I hope this helps! :)

Hi, Arnel! Thank you for your video, it really helped me to recall the knowledge about perfect continuous tenses. However, Ive noticed a mistake (8:38), is it grammatically correct to say "The pie has baked"? I just think that it needs to have passive voice, so the sentence will be "The pie has been baked" for present perfect.

I'm a bit confused in which tense to use in this situation.. For example: now is 12:pm and it started raining at 11:am for an hour and stopped (same day)... and I want to decrible saying why that the floor is wet.. should I use present perfect continuous or past perfect continuous?
@ArnelsEverydayEnglish
@ArnelsEverydayEnglish Жыл бұрын
That's such a good question. In this case, because the floor is wet now, use the present perfect continuous. "Watch out for the puddle. It's been raining and I don't want you to slip." OR if it's a completed action, you can just use the past simple: "Watch out for the puddle. It rained earlier today and I just haven't cleaned this up yet."
