Well done Daniel! New subscriber. I’m an old fella that started training Tae Kwon Do back in 1986. In the mid ‘90s I transitioned to Kenpo and by 1997-98 I became obsessed with blending Jiu-Jitsu and Muay Thai and started training in Frank Cucci’s LYNXX Academy which had Filipino Martial Arts mixed in. Unfortunately I would skip Arnis/ Escrima days because I wasn’t interested in it as much as Jiu-Jitsu. By 2003 my martial arts training came to an end due to serious knee injury as well as work and starting a family…. 20+ years later I find myself wishing I had given more attention and time to the Filipino Martial Arts, and I’ve dug my sticks out and began slowly warming back up to it! I appreciate your channel. It’s time for this old grandfather to get back into shape, and this is exactly what I’ve needed lol. Thanks Daniel! -John from the mountains of Virginia, USA🫡

Saludos desde Venezuela. I know people from the Philippines understand Spanish and I have to say thank you very much, Daniel. I am a karate to student but I find Kali/Arni as a very good sister martial art. I'm going to follow your advices and use some Kali in my arsenal, in order to find some peace. Greetings from Venezuela.

Your video is quick and informative so its good for us who got the basics already. I saw another video wielding knife movements and its good to know the basics apply here as well. As someone who is out and about almost everyday I cant carry a long stick but a collapsible baton works just fine. As a defensive weapon the basics apply and I make a point to be proficient in what I carry. No I don't look for a fight but I just want to make sure that if I find myself in a "very tight" situation and I would need an exit spot without growing a tail your basics can be a platform for a good jumping point . Definitely a good way to train and hone the skills for a defensive skill. I also know that in a rough situation, walking away, running away is better than scraping a skin but getting in a "very tight" spot and you need to wiggle away the ability to use your EDC is a welcome option. Stay safe everyone.

I like the way you teach. You go into a lot of detail and you show the strikes slowly. Question, why do you always hit your arms? Is that to stop the striking arm?
@pinoyXasian2 жыл бұрын
In various forms and drills, this is a common way of maintaining a "defending arm". While you are striking, an arm stays close or across the center line of your body in case of retaliatory strikes, and hitting the arm is a good way to physical cue to maintain it. I've also heard that some consider it a way to cause your strikes to snap a bit more. Striking is more painful when you don't maintain your strike extended, ie faster snaps hit harder. So, when you hit your arm, again it's a physical cue, but mainly that you've extended and you should pull the strike back. It may be different depending on the style you were taught, but reasoning is usually similar to maintaining control at faster speeds. (source: I used to train in several Japanese styles, and this was reasoning provided to me)

Hi Daniel, when it is possible for you, can you teach and show our basic attacks and how to disarm the attacker from their own stick.
@daniel_bernas4 жыл бұрын
It’s Ethan Time Hey Ethan! I hesitate to do something like that online for two reasons: - disarming techniques can be really technical in terms of execution and context... and I might misarticulate myself if I teach something like that here - I personally haven't been able to apply them in a sparring match, only by accident :)). So I lack a better understanding of them I'd rather share it in person so that questions can be asked and I can corrected/challenged in a healthy way. :)

I don't know if you have done so but teaching the 10 or 12 (the number can depend on the system or style) angles of attack should be done first. Also how to strike using the sticks like a blade rather than a blunt object should be taught first?
@daniel_bernas4 жыл бұрын
PusabumCanuck Not sure if I said it here but different styles and systems have different approaches. :) Also, some stick fighting styles, like what I practice, assume the stick is a weapon on its own. The blade is a separate (but related) practice. Other styles have the stick as a substitute for the blade so that's when blade orientation should indeed be taught first :)

How long should be the standard length of stick ?
@daniel_bernas3 жыл бұрын
It's USUALLY around 28in but it can depend on the style you practice. For example, the Serrada schools use much shorter sticks. And I've seen groups use really long ones too. I personally have a collection of different lengths and like to switch it up.
