My favorite Bax Symphony. That last movement is beyond description.

Très belle version! L'enregistrement met bien en valeur les différents pupitres d'une orchestration riche et somptueuse, y compris le célesta dans le magnifique et mystérieux épilogue...

I do not understand why Mr. Bax's music is not played.

David T Because most people just want to hear Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms and Tchaikovsky over and over again. Ravel's String Quartet, a Sibelius work now and again. Maybe one work by Holst. And they look no further. Therefore neither do concert promoters. There's some wonderful stuff out there. But it doesn't put bums on seats does it? Bax is wonderful, not least his symphonies.

DAVID T An excellent example of what you are saying also applies to some of Malcolm Arnolds music. His Overture " peterloo " is a truly fantastic piece imo and should be up there in popularity with the wasps or william tell or the Maestersingers . Its only comparitively recently that Mahlers symphonies have become mainstream. The late great Sir Charles Groves performed all his symphonies during the 1960s with the RLPO when they were as rare as hens teeth .

The same reason people just want to hear, in rock music, the beatles beach boys stones who etc...never once caring to hear Zappa, Buckley, Soft Machine, VU etc...Tried and true to the death, it is a world of easy habit to the end of it, and it's a quiet tragedy for music lovers. In classical/composed music there are literally dozens of wonderful composers and compositions to pick from. I am american and look in vain for public performances of Ives, Harris, Schuman, Persichetti, Piston etc. Yes, if you mole around you can find a place performing a few token crowd-pleasers. But it's a very conservative environment - even on classical radio stations, which makes no sense. Well, at least the avant-garde somehow broke free and made a place to call home(Cage, Partch, Glass, Reich etc,) so...there is hope

@@robertfrankgill5962 Well that's a little exaggerated: Bach, Wagner, Schubert, Schumann,Verdi, Handel, Haydn, Vivaldi, Stravinsky, Chopin, Mendelsohn, Debussy, Liszt, Rachmaninov, Dvorak, Mahler, Strauss, Prokofiev, Shostakovich, Berlioz, Bruckner, Ravel Rossini , Grieg, Bartok, Franck, Mussorgsky and a lot more are regularly played in concert halls over the world. (You definitely puzzle me with "Ravels SQ" ! - is that popular?)

@The Truth Most people just want to hear Mozart, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky and Bach "with good reason"? That implies no other composers have created great music. Surely no-one who's done even a small amount of exploring could believe that!?

Agreed. Sir Arnold had a particular interest in Celtic legend. It comes through in the symphonies and tone poems. One is transported to another time, another place. He uses a very large orchestra well, indeed. Always transparent to this listener's ears. Too bad more first rank orchestras don't program his music more often.

Secondo me la più equilibrata e godibile sinfonia di Bax. L'adagio è particolarmente affine alle armonie suadenti di Delius
