I just finished reading the latest book "Zwarte Sinterklazen/Black Santa's" from this author and it must be said: "This is a must read for all that have had questions about traditional celebrations regarding Santa Claus/Sinterklaas" from Europe and elsewhere. To the author: "Do not stop writing".

This is an old documentary about the origins of our festivities Sinterklaas / Sint Nicolaas (Saint Nicolas) and his helper Zwarte Piet / Black Pete (not to be confused with 'blackface'). In the US, the festivity was completely overhauled into 'Santa Claus' with elves. Even Dutch natives have forgotten the origins of Black Pete, but up to about the 1800's he was considered a demon and demons are black. Saints had power over demons (eh? well, I didn't invent religion...). Last couple of years black people in our country (who also don't now the origins of this tradition) got it in their head that Black Pete is a reminiscent of Dutch negroslavery in the 17the century and want our tradition gone. The tradition has already drastically changed in the last decades, Black Pete isn't a scary demon anymore and we aren't even allowed to sing the traditional songs (like this lyric: (Wie goed is krijgt lekkers, wie stout is de roe) 'kids who are good get candy, kids who are bad get a beating') because that would be child abuse... If you view this documentary, you might find similarities to Halloween.
