I use to visit this mall weekly, while growing up in the Fingerlakes of NY. I was there about a year ago and about 75!% of the stores are vacant. I loved to go and always ran into people I knew.

I liked "At Seventeen" as part of the music. Although it's about an adolescent girl, it's still applicable to the malls that are slowly dying because, at the heart of the song, it's about the crushing effects of reality, along with loneliness, desolation, and resignation.

Excellent video! Been to the Arnot Mall many times over the years, such a nice mall, sad to see it have problems. Your history comments are great as are your vintage photos.

In the early 70’s I lived in Horseheads, the Mall was a wonderful place. It is interesting to see how it evolved and that it is still open.

I thought it was pronounced Arenut , not Are NOT. Nice video.

It’s more like “Ar-nit”

It is pronounced that way... at least with everyone I knew, and I grew up a few miles away from the place. No one calls it are not nor are nit.

As someone who is looking to move to this area, I appreciate your video, especially the history and commentary. It sheds a lot of light on the culture of an area.

This is the nearest mall to me, so I go here often-ish. Over the years (specifically 2020 because of the virus), it became more and more vacant. It leaves an eerie feeling that never goes away until I've left the building.

The vision store near sears has been a vision store since I was a little girl. I use to work for an independent shop named Santa Fe across from the eyeglass shop in the eighties. The pizza place use to be Picnic Pizza in the eighties.

My father owns a restoration company that did clean up work for the fire. Carry's Luggage was one of the stores he did work for and unfortunately they went bankrupt after and could not pay the bill. So we were asked to come in and shop for whatever we wanted till the bill was paid. I still have a cool swiss army knife that I picked out from there to this day.

You choose a good one for your first New York mall and glad to see my pics go to good use. This is one of my personal favorites. You can tell it is on the decline, but it still seems to be holding up as a decent B-class mall attracting plenty of local businesses. It's a shame that the former Bon-Ton/Izzard's plans fizzled out and the hotel never came. The self-storage operating there now is quite tacky. It was quite unique to have visited the second Bon-Ton in the former Macy's. The store was very clean and modern and even contained a few remnants from Macy's. Too bad the store didn't even last a year before bankruptcy closed it. Annoyingly, my last visit here saw Burlington having closed their mall access despite checkout being right at the mall entrance. I see they did have it open in your video, so it must of been because of the late hour I was visiting. Still, I would not be surprised if at some point Burlington looks to relocate. With the Sears being separately owned (former Seritage ownership), it makes it rather hard to do something with. Boscov's would be ideal if it weren't for that.

I think this place is the most popular mall with young kids ever! Every kid on the planet says “arnot” when they fight with their siblings and they respond “amtoo” 😂😂😂😂

It's not much anymore. Upstairs is closed off. Was a great mall in the early 80s

What do you mean the upstairs is closed off? The food court and the movie theater are open.
