cure beads that are scented for at least 2 weeks before making any shapes or customers will complain that they lose scent in weeks..ours will last almost a year in your car! We use 1oz fragrance per 4oz beads. Some scents like leather can take months to soak up the oil or never soak it up lol..I have one that has sat a year and is still wet..some are like that you just have to test them out others dry in just an hour but still need to cure a few weeks like candles.

On the way I learned as far as the amount of oil/beads ratio is to use a kitchen scale set to fluid Oz and for every 4oz of beads use 1oz of oil so for my 32oz jar I zero out the scale with the jar on it then I I measure 12oz of beads in the jar so that becomes the beab measuring jar then I put it aside and in another jar I measure 3oz of oil that way if I pour a little over 3 Oz I can remove the extra so when it's right I pour the beads into the oil jar and the scale should be exactly 15oz then seal and shake when the beads swell it fills the jar usually around 3/4 full give or take depending on the weight of the oils, that has been the easiest way I found to scent my beads and being consistent with scent strength and and making my oils expenses economical, the ratio is 4-1 4oz beads per 1oz oil.
@FarmhouseDesigns3 жыл бұрын
This was one of my first videos and what I was doing when I first started because I was following other tutorials. I have and updated tutorial where I use a scale which is the way I’ve been doing it for months and I agree, it’s definitely the way to go for consistency!

Also its better to weigh them on a scale. 8oz beads to 1 or 2 oz fragrance oil, depending on how strong you want it
@FarmhouseDesigns3 жыл бұрын
I’ve seen that way of doing it as well and it seems like the difference between weight and volume doesn’t come out to be that different...but I have thought about testing just to see. What I assume is that I’m probably adding more oil than what is necessary but I tend to like overpowering fragrance lol 😬 but it’s a great idea for a future video! Weight vs volume maybe I’ll learn a better way to do it or at least give viewers both options so they can see the difference and choose what works best for them! Thank you!
@rebekahalbert55443 жыл бұрын
@@FarmhouseDesigns I tried using 1 cup of the beads when i first started, 1 cup is supposed to be 8oz. When I dumped the 1 cup of beads to weigh on the scale, it was 4.something oz. So when I used my 2oz of fragrance oil, it was more than the beads could actually absorb. So i only use scales now. Much more accurate and i don't worry about messing up and potentially wasting product.

Great videos. Thanks for sharing. I'm new to candle making and want to learn about freshie making too. Can you tell us how long the scent (assuming your using the 1tbls to every 1/2 c ofbeads) lasts in your car? I'm in AR and I take it your in TX, so the heat factor is about the same...sweltering most days! 😂 Also, on said days, do the beads not melt in a hot car over time? I would think you would have a mess at some point. Do you have an instruction card (how long the scent lasts, how long you should keep them on your car, etc.) with your freshies to keep you from being liable for any potential messes they may make, etc. If so, would you share what those instructions say? Thanks again for the great videos.
@FarmhouseDesigns3 жыл бұрын
Thank you! The amount of time a scent lasts will depend a lot on the fragrance oil you use. You want to make sure you’re using a high quality uncut fragrance, being that you already work with candles I’m sure you already know all about, also some fragrances are naturally stronger than others and of course the stronger the fragrance the longer you will be able to smell it. The average I would say is 3-6 weeks but some can last 8 weeks or longer! I also want to add that I have switched from using the tbsp/cup measurement and now weigh the beads and oil (4oz of beads to 1oz of oil) it comes out to about the same thing but it is more accurate to measure by weight (also something you already do making candles). As far as melting goes….I have never had one melt in my car which typically sits in direct sunlight all day (you’re right I am in TX so HOT lol) but yes, there is a potential it could happen and I’ve seen pics that other freshie makers have posted. We have a lot of discussions about why this happens but we can’t pin point the cause as it seems very random although it happens most often when the freshie is black or another dark color (dark colors attract heat so this makes sense) but lighter colors have melted too just not as often. I also suggest making the hole that your string goes through at least an inch from the edge so at the very least if it does begin to melt it won’t fall off the string as easily and melt on the console of the car. I do include a warning label with all of my freshies…..I wish I could post a pic for you but KZbin doesn’t have that feature…..I will be doing a video in the coming weeks on how I package and label, it will include my warning label. But it basically just says that it can melt, don’t park in direct sunlight, always hang, not responsible for damages….there’s more to it but that’s the important stuff. I appreciate you watching and thank you for your comment!

Most of the cutters are 4”-5” depending on the shape. I got mine from Ann Clark Cookie Cutters ☺️ Mica powder depends a lot on the color you want to achieve but always start with a pinch and add as needed. Be careful not to over do it, too much mica can prevent your beads from melting and sticking together well.

Thanks for the tips! I am following your recipe with the same brand of beads and oils, but my scents aren’t smelling strong enough or lasting in the car. Any idea what I could be doing wrong?
@FarmhouseDesigns3 жыл бұрын
It’s tough to say…. Have you had some friends and family test them for you? I know myself when working with all the scents on a regular basis my sense of smell gets dulled down and I don’t pick up the smell as easily. For example I had one in my car that I was getting ready to swap out because I couldn’t smell it anymore and someone else got in my car and was raving about how good it smelled…. We are in the hotter months right now, the hotter it is the quicker the oils are released. Which brand of oils are you using exactly because I have switched to primarily only using oil from Buy It Ship It and it’s made a big difference, I still get some scents from Lone Star but only because BISI doesn’t carry them.

Another question, I have made a lot of car freshies and none have melted. My husbands just melted in his car for the first time. Any idea what I did wrong? Could it be that specific fragrance?
@FarmhouseDesigns3 жыл бұрын
So there’s a freshie group on fb and this issue has come up from time to time and everyone has tried to find a common thread between the freshies that they have had melt, they have shared where the beads were bought, which fragrance was used, what area of the country they were in and the type or color that was used. The results came out very random and there is still no answer as to why some melt and others don’t. The only two things that came up more often were 1) the freshie was trapped between the windshield and a sunshade. 2) the freshie was black or another very dark color. But in our group we’ve seen just about all colors and shaped melt, it’s still a mystery as to why it happens sometimes. My best advice is to avoid dark colors in the summer and place the hole that you hang it from closer to the center of the design.

Are they both from the same person? Leather has been my biggest enemy, I actually haven’t made a leather scented freshie in over 9 months because I can’t find a strong, long lasting oil and I have tested about 6-7 different companies already. If they are from the same person they may have switched their oil…..otherwise I’m not sure why they would do that, unless you bought them months apart from each other and the first one lasted because the weather was cooler, the warmer the weather the stronger they will smell but they won’t last near as long.

How do you clean your jars to remove the scents ?
@FarmhouseDesigns3 жыл бұрын
The jars themselves I either put them in the dishwasher or soak them in hot soapy water and wipe them down. I don’t think the lids should be put in the dishwasher. I still cannot figure out a way to get the scent out of the rubber seal on the lids, I’ve tried just about everything so now reuse lids with similar fragrances, as long as the old fragrance is similar to the new fragrance it will mask it. But leather for instance, use the same lids always....if you mix up a leather jar and you’ve used the lid with some other fragrance you will smell that other fragrance! Also Walmart sells just the lids by themselves so you can always have fresh ones on hand!

Are your freshies suppose to be hard or pretty bendy?
@FarmhouseDesigns3 жыл бұрын
It depends on the beads you’re using and the temperature of the freshie. I have used beads that at room temperature were still pretty flexible and others that were really firm. Also, when they are in a hot car they become softer and more flexible again. Of course the thickness of the freshie will change how bendy it is…..the thinner it is the more it will bend and the thicker it is the more difficult it will be to bend.

Yes you can use essential oils but I would definitely start out with using less than a candle fragrance oil as essential oils tend to be very strong.
