Tried playing it in my head and I still missed notes...

To be honest a big part of playing fast is being able to hear it in your head. That's why a metronome and practicing accenting notes on the beat is really helpful!

By this I mean you don't fluff it up with "ok now 15th fret a string then 14th fret a string then 12th fret a string" You just play it without a bunch of confusing bullshit.

I am 56 and have been playing for 44 years off and on but now that I am really pushing myself, after learning a lot of Zeppelin and Yes, Heart, and Boston, Kansas, Styx Cream, Pink Floyd, Eagles, Peter Frampton, Journey, and so on, to explore other Jazz Chords and phrasings, I find I am torn over using a pick. I can play "almost" as fast without a pick, but with just my thumb I lose the precision trill, but I also lose "Pick Click" which tends to make one either, carefully swipe the pick alternately between edge strikes and slanted strikes to "soften" the staccato pick sound that can develop as you do a run. Of course, just holding a pick and alternating with thumb, and for use in hybrid picking, is the best way, which is how I play, I was just wondering if "Pick Click" bothers you, or what do you think of "adaptive" pick alignment? I see you maintain a nice slant on the sweeps but when the staccato picking comes in then the pick click dominates, of course you have to use various thumb spots to minimize abrasion but it's so pleasing. The pick is still necessary.

Even if you're an advanced player, this is extremely difficult. Anyway, it's worth practicing it to expand your mind. You always learn something new, even if you can't play it the same way (or even close). Rick is amazing and should be playing in the same stage as Paul gilbert, Guthrie Govan, Steve Vai and others.

Just a quick question, what key are the arpeggios in? Dmin to C7 is firmly in D minor but B diminished and A7 are not? What is happening here and how does it resolve back to D? I know that A7 is a secondary dominant but the B diminished arpeggio doesn't make sense.
