We are tasting one of Jen's old favourites today! The Quarter Cask or Bothy from Arran's Lochranza Distillery.
The quarter cask is a smaller cask which gives a more intense flavour to the whisky more quickly and results in a really full flavoured and intense dram!
What you you think of the Arran Quarter Cask whisky.....and what's the biggest bothy you've ever seen?! Let us know in the comments!
Please continue to bear with us with the technology difficulties, we have a new camera, microphone and lighting but haven't quite got to grips with the settings yet! We're getting there slowly though!

I was told on a tour that during the building of the distillery, a pair of golden eagles built their nest near the distillery site, delaying construction for a short time.

Peanut is a common tasting note in Bourbon. Maybe it is carrying over from the 7 years in 1st fill bourbon casks before the quarter cask finish ? Really enjoy this one. Cheers you two

I am a big Arran fan also. Love the 10 and 18yr. Single cask offerings are also yummy.

Arran is on a bit of a roll. To not say you looovvveee the 10yo is a bit like heresy at the moment. My favourite was the 14yo - I’m sure it or a 15yo will come back into the core range (which is pretty large!). Cheers ladies

Yeah hats off for the honest opinion on the 10. I'm kind of with you. For me it's interesting and characterful but not something I'd rave about. Did a tour there this year and there isn't going to be a 14/15 for good while as they've trying to hold stock for older age statements.

Haha it does seem to be! But we can't all have the same taste can we!? The 14 was a good one! Hopefully something similar will be back in the future!

it sounds like a Bothy is what Americans would call a Cabin. I'm mainly a bourbon drinker, but there are a few favorite Scotch brands/bottles I keep on my shelf - Arran being one of them (Glenfarclas & Glendronach being the other two). Unfortunately, I've never seen the Quarter Cask Arran offering on the shelf of my local liquor stores of the Denver, Colorado suburbs. I love their 18 year, 10 year, and the Barrel Reserve, so I'm sure I'd like the Quarter-Cask too.

Thanks for the review, my wife and I were wondering if it's worth the trouble trying to get a bottle over to the states. As far as I can tell, they rebranded in or around 2019. We had no idea we were drinking extinct sauternes finish, lochranza, and 18 until we saw the 10 on the shelf a few months ago. Hopefully they keep up the quality. Cheers!

In our opinion the quality has kept up so far anyway, and their new distillery, Lagg, from the first release anyway, seems promising! We'd say if you were going to try and get an Arran over, the Quarter Cask is probably the one we'd go for!

We are working on peat slowly. We found springbank 10 CS interesting but Balvenie peat week was too deep of a dive. I did enjoy Benromach 10 and could push through Torabhaig. Sorry for writing a book, hopefully you find it interesting - mostly the south of the US can happily spend 13 to 20 hours cooking slabs of meat with just hot smoke. One of the hallmarks of good barbecue is avoiding any of the bitter phenolic flavors. We like Arran enough that we will keep an eye out for Lagg in the coming years, but it will probably take a lot more work on our end until then

@@pablov9212 Don't be sorry we love reading anything whisky related!! That's more than fair, we had a wee taste of Lagg and it might be a bit too peaty for you. We love Benromach! Have you tried any of Ardnamurchans stuff yet? The newer peaty Glenturret is delicious too and Tomatin's peaty whisky Cu Bocan could all be good to try if you can get your hands on them :)

I've had my eye on an Ardnamurchan 03.21/02 (however they write it) and Ballechin that sits on a shelf here, but haven't tried Edradour base yet to know if the new make is even up my alley. I think the 3.21 is a mix of peated and unpeated, but should probably read up on it.
@pablov9212
@pablov9212 Жыл бұрын
Also, if Lagg is that peated, would Machrie Moor possibly be appropriate? Would be more eager to support Arran if I'm going to chance a bottle at all.

The size of bothies range from a small shed to a large farmhouse. BTW your mic setup needs work as there's quite a bit of noise.

Thanks, as we have said in our blurb under the video we are still working out our settings. Any advice on what to actually do to improve our sound quality would be gratefully recieved!
@inajiffy5435
@inajiffy5435 2 жыл бұрын
@@TheGrailTastings I'd guess your mic is way too far away from you. It's turning the gain up very high to get a reasonable sound level from your voices and thus raising the noise floor. Pick up a cheap mic boom arm and get it just between and in front of you.
