Arran's Roads ~ UPDATE

Since this video was uploaded, North Ayrshire Council has invested nearly £2m on our island roads. The improvements are dramatic, with extended sections magnificently resurfaced. Inevitably there is always more to do, but driving on Arran today is significantly safer and your vehicle is less likely to be damaged by ruts and potholes.
A brief study of current problems and a plea to North Ayrshire Council for immediate remedial action to prevent further accidents and damage to vehicles, using more effective methods of repair.

good work... wish there were more guys like you in the world that do care about others... the ribbon road on WoH (westcoast of heaven-- Arran) is total hazardous to the point of deadly danger.. Lizzie x

I live on Arran just 5 miles from Brodick. 2 years ago I injured my back and the slightest jolt sends it into spasms. When I drive its fine on the properly resurfaced stretches few of which extend more than a few hundred yards. The rest of the road from Corrie to Brodick is a total nightmare for me. The last time I drove it was so bad I have not dared try it again. That was 6 weeks ago. I have just paid my Road Tax and I wonder what for!!! We need action NOW!!!

We visit the island regularly in a Motorhome with a Scooter on the back. I frequently have to drive the MH in the middle of the road to avoid ruts and holes and when on the bike we have to be sooooo careful, hit a pothole or loose gravel and your probably dead. We are seasoned visitors and know the roads and most of the problem areas well. This is the worst I have seen it and I hope I am wrong but one day soon an unseasoned visitor possibly on a bike is going to get killed Keep it up Ian!

My wife and I come to Arran as often as we can. We bring our caravan from the ferry at Brodick to the campsite at Lochranza. I can speak from experience that the items in the video are spot on, The only bad thing about this lovely Island are the appalling roads. Come on North Ayrshire Council, Get some cash spent on the Arran roads.

Well done Smally, In the last year we've had new shocks, a buckled wheel, a puncture, and now new bushes. NAC should go to Skye & have a look at the road from Scullamus to Armadale. It use to be single track like the Ross & now puts the M8 to shame. If they can do it why can't NAC???

Shocking state the roads are in. I look forward to cycling round the Island several times during the summer season, but I'll be having second thoughts about it this year unless I can hire a Challenger 2 Tank which might be adequate for the job. Go to Argyll if you want to see better roads, you can go for many miles without seeing a pothole!

I've traveled to Arran many a time over the years and the roads have been steadily getting worse, the roads don't need a quick fix, they need ripping up and starting again, I know that would cause a lot of disruption on the island but it could be done, NAC really needs to get it's act together for the safety of the islanders and the tourists, a beautiful island, spoilt by the roads :-( I'll be back again in Aug 2012 for a few weeks, can't wait but hope the car can handle it.

You seem to not understand or have forgotten that this is not just a beautiful island but it is also a working island, and home to many and you forget that a horse has a mind of its own and could decide to stop at anypoint

I took my car over to Lochranza from Cloanaig and I noticed a big difference compared to the roads in Argyll the minute I hit the roads in Arran. They are the worst roads in Scotland. Keep up the campaign

I live in Irvine and have just bought my second pair of springs in two years (15'000mls) for the front of my car £180 per pair from GM. They blame the roads.

Yes they have, although unfortunately they are now declining badly again.

If motorists gave cyclists the same consideration and room as horses get, nobody would get injured. Speed is always the problem. What's the big rush on a beautiful island like Arran?

If you hit a cyclist swerving to avoid a pothole, I think your agenda will be that pothole.
